Nets trading star guard Irving to Mavs

The Brooklyn Nets are trading Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday.

The Mavericks are sending Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick and second-round picks in 2027 and 2029 to the Nets in exchange for Irving and Markieff Morris, sources said.

The Nets plan to offer the picks acquired in the trade -- as well as their 2027 first-round pick via the Philadelphia 76ers -- in trade talks to try to improve the roster ahead of the Thursday trade deadline, sources said.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Nets discussed possible Irving deals on Friday and Saturday. But ultimately, the Mavericks' package gave the Nets a better chance to surround Kevin Durant with players now -- as well as the opportunity to acquire three draft picks, sources said. The Nets had been looking at three-way deals involving the Lakers before discussions with the Mavericks came together fairly quickly Sunday afternoon, sources said.

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has a long history with Irving, going back to their Nike days together, and Dallas coach Jason Kidd was a proponent of the trade. The Mavericks also ran the deal for Irving past All-NBA star Luka Doncic, who gave it a nod, a source told ESPN. The Mavs can now wait to see how the rest of the season goes before deciding on a new deal for Irving.

Irving is expected to arrive for a physical on Monday in Dallas and travel to make his Mavericks debut at the LA Clippers on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET, ESPN), a source said.

Dinwiddie, meanwhile, returns to Brooklyn, where he played for five seasons before sustaining an ACL injury early in the 2020-21 season.

Irving's tenure in Brooklyn ends after a tumultuous four seasons that included injuries, dozens of missed games due to a refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and a suspension this season for promoting a movie that contained antisemitic themes.

Irving, 30, opted into the final season of his deal in the summer but requested a trade earlier this week after failing to reach an agreement with Brooklyn on an extension.

"Thank you NetsWorld fans and supporters for the Love on and off the court," Irving wrote in a tweet early Monday morning. "I will forever be grateful I got to live out my dream I had as a Kid with y'all. It will always be Love from me and my family."

198.5 million maximum extension available to him until June 30, sources said. He also is eligible to sign a two-year, $1

83 million extension with the Mavericks until June 30.

Irving has played fewer than 150 games combined over the past four seasons, but he remained a max-level player when he was on the court. Irving is averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists this season on excellent efficiency.

don t think anyone is going to offer sheet him for two ones and his contract demands The question is are they going to have the stones to stand in there Do you risk a chance of a team coming in after teams from signing Jackson to an offer sheet while making it easier for the Ravens to maximize compensation in a trade The non exclusive tag would make sense if the Ravens hoped another team might sign Jackson to an offer sheet In that case the Ravens would receive two first round draft choices in return for Jackson if they let him go It might be harder under those circumstances for Baltimore to command more than that in return from another team There could be additional risk for the Ravens If another team waited until after the 2023 draft before signing Jackson to an offer sheet those first round picks would be in 2024 and 2025 Those picks also might be relatively late in the order if Jackson were to succeed with his new team Jackson would also have to sign the offer associated do it Those good coaches like Brian Daboll can get more from the cheaper guys Kyle Shanahan doesn t need a superstar quarterback Seattle trades Russell Wilson and performs better with Geno Smith I think it s a really fascinating tipping point to watch I m banking on the Giants signing both players for less than the franchise tag values at their positions Under this scenario the team would use the franchise or transition tag to help leverage a workable multi year deal with Barkley before free agency At quarterback the Giants would offer Jones a shorter term deal at less than the 1 Credit https theathletic com 4157315 2023 02 06 nfl predictions offseason quarterback moves 32 million annual average associated with the franchise tag The team would be betting on Daboll s ability to get more from a cheaper free agent quarterback or a rookie if Jones thought he could find a better situation elsewhere The hope would be that Jones might value Daboll s role in his development sufficiently to accept such a deal It all sounds so easy but the Giants face a balancing act as they seek to reward Jones and Barkley for strong seasons while maintaining long term flexibility For a team that is just getting out of cap trouble they would be wise to slow play it but it is really hard to slow play two guys another exec said When you are setting up a program you want to send the right message to your players to your coaches The message is almost as important as the dollars The Giants under Daboll are facing a situation similar to the one the Rams faced following Sean McVay s first season with Los Angeles Both teams wanted to reward running backs coming off excellent seasons When you are trying to build a culture it is really hard not to reward players who are playing at a high level and at high volume as well the first exec said Todd Gurley had played 80 percent of the snaps for the Rams in 2017 rushing for 1 305 yards and 13 touchdowns for a team that reached the playoffs unexpectedly The Rams then entered into a four year 1 Credit https theathletic com 4157315 2023 02 06 nfl predictions offseason quarterback moves 60 million extension with Gurley only to regret the agreement Barkley played 80 percent of the Giants snaps last season while rushing for 1 312 yards and 10 touchdowns He turns 26 this week Gurley was entering his age 24 season when the Rams re signed him Is anybody going to value Saquon Barkley more than the New York Giants an agent asked So where is Saquon going You don t have to franchise him Save the tag for your quarterback It is a one year deal Who cares about a one year deal That depends whether you think Daboll can get as much or more from another quarterback at a considerably lower rate That is quite the qualifier admittedly but let us paint a picture You are telling me Brady is going to be calling San Francisco at Jacksonville next season and he is going to be looking down to the field at Trey Lance and Trevor Lawrence and it s going to be a 7 7 game in the second quarter and he is going to be sitting there saying I m where I should be in Jacksonville s press box a veteran coach said He has played too well too recently I just don t buy it That doesn t mean Brady is bluffing by announcing his retirement I m sure he knows all of his current options and would rather do this another exec said I truly think he got to the point where he wanted to retire last year he just didn t know how Last year and this year showed him the fantasy of going out on top is probably gone Given where his kids are in New York and Miami there are only a handful of places he could maybe play Does he want to start over and do all that Brady was linked to the Dolphins last offseason to the point Miami incurred tampering penalties for its pursuit of him The Dolphins could need a quarterback in the near future as chronic concussions threaten Tagovailoa s career The Raiders have been seen as a logical landing spot for Brady given his ties to McDaniels The 49ers seemed like a good fit given the state of their team and Brady s childhood fandom of the team Jason Witten spent one year in the ESPN broadcast booth before returning for a final season Brady is much older He might stay retired But if the right situation presents itself will he be able to resist Not everyone is sold With so much focus on officiating in the championship round one might expect the league to take a hard look at something But there s a huge gap between what the public thinks of officiating and what the NFL s officiating brass think of officiating As a result nothing is changing unless someone with stature is sufficiently aggrieved think Sean Payton after his Saints came out on the short end of that postseason non call for pass interference against the Rams Everyone is all hellbent on the playoffs and the officiating and the leadership in officiating but guess what they are running it back because there is no one to spearhead change an exec said Sean Payton is not getting involved Bill Belichick is not getting involved Andy Reid is not getting involved Rich McKay is not getting involved Kyle Shanahan is not getting involved and Philadelphia isn t getting involved Who is standing on the table No one is standing on the table unless say Super Bowl referee Carl Cheffers sufficiently ticks off someone as influential as Chiefs coach Andy Reid Four years ago Reid and the Chiefs proposed changes to overtime after New England eliminated Kansas City from the playoffs without Reid s team possessing the ball in the extra period This season Cheffers roughing the passer call against Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones cost Kansas City against the Raiders The call enraged Reid to the point that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he couldn t recall his coach reacting more angrily to an official s call Will anything major in officiating change Tune in to the Super Bowl and find out Subscribe to Sando’s Pick Six

Super Bowl 57 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles is all that stands between the NFL and another packed offseason news cycle.

Drop in for the predictions, stay for the conversation, because in just about every case, there’s more than one way to come at these topics.

The way the 2022 season unraveled for Green Bay affirms that the Packers might have been best off trading Rodgers last offseason instead of entering into a market-setting contract extension with him. That extension does give the team all offseason to find a trading partner before a $1

58.3 million option bonus is due in Week 1.

“I think the Packers are done with him,” a longtime NFL team executive said on the condition of anonymity for competitive reasons. “The time to jump off was last year. They missed the ability to maximize their compensation. And they missed the playoffs. When they moved Davante (Adams), they should have moved Aaron and said, ‘We are starting over and we have all these picks.’ They could have sent him to Denver.”

The jumping-off point is even more obvious now. Rodgers’ weekly pontifications through The Pat McAfee Show have included suggestions the team should re-sign declining veteran players who are Rodgers’ friends, while questioning whether the Packers will provide the best opportunity for him to win additional MVP awards.

“I think he showed his true colors last offseason when he held them hostage and took $1

50 million a year,” another exec said. “He knew he could get his best deal from the Packers, and now that he has it, now that he has secured the bag, he is open to leaving.”

The Jets have been rumored as a logical landing spot for Rodgers based on their need at the position and the presence of new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who coached Rodgers in Green Bay. Execs have pointed to Tennessee as an intriguing potential landing spot. The Packers might not trade Rodgers to an NFC contender such as San Francisco even if the 49ers were interested in absorbing the contractual ramifications.

“Tennessee is a great spot for him,” the first exec said.

“I could totally see that,” the second exec said.

    What about the Jets?

“I just don’t know that he is going to want to be in New York,” the first exec said. “Mike Vrabel and Tennessee seem more his pace. Whether Vrabel wants to put up with his s—, who knows? But Matt LaFleur was the offensive coordinator with Vrabel, so Vrabel could pick his brain. Robert Saleh and LaFleur are close. Those teams all have ties.”

The Raiders are also in the market for a quarterback pending Carr’s expected departure from the team.

“Vegas would be fine for him,” the first exec said. “It just seems like a weird fit, Rodgers’ personality and Josh McDaniels. I think Josh would probably rather develop his own guy than have Rodgers, and I think he’d rather have (Jimmy) Garoppolo than Rodgers.”

Quite a few other teams need quarterbacks and could be in the mix, depending on factors that include Rodgers’ interest in those markets. The bottom line is that NFL execs think the Packers are more likely to trade Rodgers than to hold onto him.

“Who are these guys?” a veteran coach countered. “I’d love to be the hypothetical owner in Green Bay listening to the GM and president present the trade case to me so I could reply, ‘OK, in summary, you want to trade an MVP-caliber player who still creates 2-3 wins per season, so we can attempt to solidify our evaluation of our third-year drafted quarterback while he is throwing to sub-average weaponry? It sounds like we are patterning ourselves after our rivals. Which one, Chicago?’ ”

Few expect team and player to reach agreement on a long-term extension this offseason, unless Jackson drops his reported demands for a fully guaranteed contract like the one Deshaun Watson signed.

The Ravens did defuse some of the tension by publicly recommitting to Jackson amid questions about whether the contract impasse had contributed to the quarterback missing games late in the season.

“If it wasn’t for all of the comments that (general manager) Eric DeCosta and (coach) John Harbaugh said in their postseason presser, I would think he is going to get traded,” an exec said. “I feel like he is just going to get tagged now and play on the tag. I don’t think anyone is going to offer-sheet him for two ones and his contract demands. The question is, are they going to have the stones to stand in there? Do you risk a chance of a team coming in after the draft and offer-sheeting him then?”

Whether the Ravens apply the exclusive or non-exclusive franchise tag would affect what can happen next.

Using the exclusive tag would cost more and prevent other teams from signing Jackson to an offer sheet while making it easier for the Ravens to maximize compensation in a trade.

The non-exclusive tag would make sense if the Ravens hoped another team might sign Jackson to an offer sheet. In that case, the Ravens would receive two first-round draft choices in return for Jackson if they let him go. It might be harder under those circumstances for Baltimore to command more than that in return from another team.

There could be additional risk for the Ravens. If another team waited until after the 2023 draft before signing Jackson to an offer sheet, those first-round picks would be in 2024 and 2025. Those picks also might be relatively late in the order if Jackson were to succeed with his new team.

Jackson would also have to sign the offer associated with the franchise tag to facilitate any trade. That part might be a formality if another team were willing to enter into a contract amenable to Jackson.

Matt Cassel is the most recent quarterback traded while on the franchise tag. The New England Patriots used the tag to retain his rights in 2009 before trading him and Vrabel to the Chiefs for a second-round pick.

“It is hard to build an offense around Lamar,” another exec said. “You can certainly do it, but a place like the Jets, is that the best fit for what Nate Hackett wants to do? Mike McDaniel probably would do great with Lamar. Maybe a Lamar-for-Tua trade makes sense. Maybe Atlanta would make sense for Lamar with Arthur Smith, but I think Baltimore tags him and holds onto him.”

Solid veteran quarterbacks rarely reach the market, but with Carr’s contract calling for him to receive $1

40.4 million on Feb. 15, his release from the Raiders appears more likely than Las Vegas finding a trade partner for its recently benched quarterback.

Why would anyone else pay Carr anything approaching the salary Las Vegas is seeking to avoid paying?

“I am fascinated by Carr because I think he may be the first person who suffers from, ‘I am not paying a mediocre QB,’ ” an exec from a team with an established quarterback said. “I think Carr is more likely to be Nick Foles than Kirk Cousins. Foles got an OK deal with the Jags, but nothing earth-shattering even at the time. When you look at the landing spots, who is going to go pay Derek Carr $1

    30 million?”

Kirk Cousins signed a fully guaranteed deal with Minnesota for three years and $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

    30.5 million.

Carr is closer to Cousins than Foles in sustained career production. Will that equate to the same sort of deal?

“That Garoppolo/Carr level of quarterback on the open market is going to be fascinating,” another exec said. “The top of the market is established at $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

40-50 million, and even some of the $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

40 million guys aren’t worth it. Then you have Kirk Cousins making $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

35 million, and he is going to be in the last year of his deal.”

If Carr and Garoppolo settle for deals in the $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

    15-25 million range, then what?

“What happens with Carr and Garoppolo is going to be instructive to what Kirk Cousins should expect on the open market,” this exec said. “It’s going to either scare Minnesota into doing another deal, like they did last year, or Kirk Cousins is finally going to fail in the business of football.”

Some failure that would be! By the end of the 2023 season, Cousins will have earned more than $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

200 million from the Vikings alone.

An agent discounted the idea Carr’s next deal would come in as low as the execs suggested it could. He thought there were too many teams desperate for quarterbacks, and too few viable options, for Carr’s market to crater. He cautioned that what some execs say in February could differ from what other execs do in March.

Carr, Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett are three veteran quarterbacks teams might consider signing as starters, at varied price points. Add three or four drafted rookies to that group, and there still would be more teams with potential openings — nine, at least — than there are viable starters, unless you’re eager to play with Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Teddy Bridgewater or the like.

Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, New Orleans, the Jets, Tampa Bay and Washington all might need quarterbacks. Miami is a wild card with Tua Tagovailoa’s health concerns. San Francisco and Arizona could have shorter-term needs.

“The agents like to keep driving it up, and I totally understand that, and it seems like there is always one team that pays,” a third exec said. “You just have to have the guts to not do it. Those good coaches like Brian Daboll can get more from the cheaper guys. Kyle Shanahan doesn’t need a superstar quarterback. Seattle trades Russell Wilson and performs better with Geno Smith. I think it’s a really fascinating tipping point to watch.”

I’m banking on the Giants signing both players for less than the franchise-tag values at their positions.

Under this scenario, the team would use the franchise or transition tag to help leverage a workable multi-year deal with Barkley before free agency.

At quarterback, the Giants would offer Jones a shorter-term deal at less than the $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

32 million annual average associated with the franchise tag. The team would be betting on Daboll’s ability to get more from a cheaper free-agent quarterback (or a rookie) if Jones thought he could find a better situation elsewhere.

The hope would be that Jones might value Daboll’s role in his development sufficiently to accept such a deal.

It all sounds so easy, but the Giants face a balancing act as they seek to reward Jones and Barkley for strong seasons while maintaining long-term flexibility.

“For a team that is just getting out of cap trouble, they would be wise to slow-play it, but it is really hard to slow-play two guys,” another exec said. “When you are setting up a program, you want to send the right message to your players, to your coaches. The message is almost as important as the dollars.”

The Giants under Daboll are facing a situation similar to the one the Rams faced following Sean McVay’s first season with Los Angeles. Both teams wanted to reward running backs coming off excellent seasons.

“When you are trying to build a culture, it is really hard not to reward players who are playing at a high level and at high volume as well,” the first exec said.

Todd Gurley had played 80 percent of the snaps for the Rams in 2017, rushing for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns for a team that reached the playoffs unexpectedly. The Rams then entered into a four-year, $1

    Credit: https://theathletic.com/4157315/2023/02/06/nfl-predictions-offseason-quarterback-moves/

60 million extension with Gurley, only to regret the agreement.

Barkley played 80 percent of the Giants’ snaps last season while rushing for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns. He turns 26 this week (Gurley was entering his age-24 season when the Rams re-signed him).

“Is anybody going to value Saquon Barkley more than the New York Giants?” an agent asked. “So where is Saquon going? You don’t have to franchise him. Save the tag for your quarterback. It is a one-year deal. Who cares about a one-year deal?”

That depends whether you think Daboll can get as much or more from another quarterback at a considerably lower rate.

That is quite the qualifier, admittedly, but let us paint a picture.

“You are telling me Brady is going to be calling San Francisco at Jacksonville next season and he is going to be looking down to the field at Trey Lance and Trevor Lawrence and it’s going to be a 7-7 game in the second quarter and he is going to be sitting there saying, ‘I’m where I should be, in Jacksonville’s press box?’ ” a veteran coach said. “He has played too well, too recently. I just don’t buy it.”

That doesn’t mean Brady is bluffing by announcing his retirement.

“I’m sure he knows all of his (current) options and would rather do this,” another exec said. “I truly think he got to the point where he wanted to retire last year, he just didn’t know how. Last year and this year showed him the fantasy of going out on top is probably gone. Given where his kids are in New York and Miami, there are only a handful of places he could maybe play. Does he want to start over and do all that?”

Brady was linked to the Dolphins last offseason, to the point Miami incurred tampering penalties for its pursuit of him. The Dolphins could need a quarterback in the near future as chronic concussions threaten Tagovailoa’s career.

The Raiders have been seen as a logical landing spot for Brady, given his ties to McDaniels. The 49ers seemed like a good fit given the state of their team and Brady’s childhood fandom of the team.

Jason Witten spent one year in the ESPN broadcast booth before returning for a final season. Brady is much older. He might stay retired. But if the right situation presents itself, will he be able to resist? Not everyone is sold.

With so much focus on officiating in the championship round, one might expect the league to take a hard look at something. But there’s a huge gap between what the public thinks of officiating and what the NFL’s officiating brass think of officiating.

As a result, nothing is changing unless someone with stature is sufficiently aggrieved — think Sean Payton after his Saints came out on the short end of that postseason non-call for pass interference against the Rams.

“Everyone is all hellbent on the playoffs and the officiating and the leadership in officiating, but guess what, they are running it back because there is no one to spearhead change,” an exec said. “Sean Payton is not getting involved, Bill Belichick is not getting involved, Andy Reid is not getting involved, Rich McKay is not getting involved, Kyle Shanahan is not getting involved and Philadelphia isn’t getting involved. Who is standing on the table?”

No one is standing on the table unless, say, Super Bowl referee Carl Cheffers sufficiently ticks off someone as influential as Chiefs coach Andy Reid.

Four years ago, Reid and the Chiefs proposed changes to overtime after New England eliminated Kansas City from the playoffs without Reid’s team possessing the ball in the extra period.

This season, Cheffers’ roughing-the-passer call against Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones cost Kansas City against the Raiders. The call enraged Reid to the point that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he couldn’t recall his coach reacting more angrily to an official’s call.

Joe Tsai refuses to bow to Kyrie Irving’s demands to join LA Lakers

Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai wasn’t about to bow to the commands of wantaway superstar Kyrie Irving.

Irving rocked the NBA landscape when his trade demand to get out of Brooklyn was revealed. Less than 48 hours later the star guard was sent on his way.

Irving had reportedly threatened to sit out the remainder of the season if his demand to be traded was not met.

Teams scrambled to get their best offers in with many pundits believing the Los Angeles Lakers would sweep him up and partner Irving up once again with LeBron James.

Landing in California to be alongside “The King” was said to be the top priority for Irving, but Tsai wasn’t having it.

NBA reporter Marc Stein stated that one of Tsai and the Nets’ main objectives was to not comply with Irving’s preferences and send him anywhere other than the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers reported packaged an offer of Russell Westbrook and two first round picks, but the Nets hit back asking for a kings ransom before ultimately shipping him off to Dallas.

The Mavericks sent Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, a 2029 first round draft pick and two second round picks in exchange for Irving and Markieff Morris.

Finney-Smith went undrafted out of the University of Florida in 2016 before being picked up by the Mavericks.

The 6’7 forward is averaging 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds on the season so far.

Dinwiddie was taken with the 38th overall pick in the 2014 draft by Detroit, and returns to Brooklyn, having had a five-year stint there between 2016 and 2021 before an ACL injury.

Irving had reportedly threatened to sit out the rest of the season if he was not traded, according to Stephen A. Smith on NBA Countdown.

“Kyrie Irving is prepared to sit out the rest of the season if need be,” Smith said before the Mavericks trade was locked in.

    “That’s what I’m being told.”

With Irving eligible for a two-year extension now, or a four-year deal in the summer, Dallas will have “close to max salary cap space” this coming offseason if they do not commit to Irving long-term, according to Tim MacMahon from ESPN.

Irving is the only incoming All-Star on an expiring contract this year, and so not committing would free up Dallas to either overpay to lock up an in-demand free agent of their choice, possibly Minnesota’s D’Angelo Russell, who is averaging 18.1 points and 6.2 assists on the season, or remain flexible with their expenditure.

198.5 maximum extension, according to ESPN.

Trade talks with the Lakers were reportedly quite advanced, but the Nets opted to go with the Mavericks’ package, which provided immediate cover for Irving at point guard, as well as future draft picks.

Irving’s time in Brooklyn has been turbulent since he signed in free agency in July 2019.

After becoming the ninth player in NBA history to join the 50-40-90 club and the fourth to do so while averaging 25 points a game, Irving refused to be vaccinated against Covid-19, preventing him from playing or practising with the Nets for a two-month stretch.

The eight-time All-Star eventually returned to the Nets as a part-time player, only playing games outside of the New York and Toronto area, where local laws required him to be vaccinated in order to play.

The 30-year-old requested and was granted permission to seek a sign-and-trade last year, but eventually returned to the Nets alongside 13-time All-Star teammate Kevin Durant, opting into a US$1

    37 million player option.

Then-Nets shooting guard James Harden also asked to be traded ahead of the deadline last season, ending up in Philadelphia.

In November last year, the Nets suspended Irving again for refusing to “unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs” after he took to Twitter to share a link to an antisemitic 2018 documentary entitled “Hebrews to Negroes”.

He is averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists on the season, shooting 48.6% from the field and 37.4% from deep.

The Nets enter the trade deadline placed 4th in the Eastern Conference.

NBA fans erupt over Kyrie Irving trade

The Dallas Mavericks have rocked the NBA with a bold trade for superstar point guard Kyrie Irving, as they days tick down to the league's trade deadline. The Mavericks, helmed by fellow superstar Luka Doncic, are in the middle of a tightly-packed playoff race in the Western Conference, and are betting that the controversial guard can bolster their 28-26 record.

It's a big swing for the Mavericks, with Irving set to become a free agent ahead of next season - which could effectively render the crucial assets in guard Spencer Dinwiddie and defensive wing Dorian Finney-Smith, as well as a future draft pick, wasted assets if Irving walks away. But after making the Western Conference Finals last season, Dallas' middling record has not represented the leap into elite contention many fans had hoped for.

Their offer however, was enough to beat strong offers from the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns, both conference rivals also in need of an injection of talent to free themselves from the playoff logjam. The Lakers offered Russell Westbrook, the former MVP whose hefty contract is also due to come off the books at the end of the season, as well as first-round draft selections in seasons to come.

The Suns offered veteran point guard Chris Paul, as well as Jae Crowder and other draft considerations. But the Nets preferred the Mavericks' offer - prompting a big reaction from NBA fans.

Irving's tenure in Brooklyn can most charitably be described as enigmatic, after signing with the team alongside Kevin Durant in 2019. Injuries and off-court controversies have plagued the eight-time NBA All-Star, most recently an eight-game suspension levied by the Nets following an anti-semitism controversy last year.

Irving is averaging 27 points, five rebounds and five assists this season, and looms as a valuable addition alongside Doncic and big man Christian Wood. However on social media, not all NBA fans were convinced of the upside for Dallas.

Kyrie Irving extension talks are expected to be put off until this summer. He is eligible for a 2-year extension now and a 4-year deal in the summer. If the Mavs-Kyrie union doesn’t continue, Dallas will have close to max salary cap space this summer.

Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith are really impactful players that will make a difference in the postseason. I’ve seen too much on here about those two not being quality pieces in the Kyrie Irving deal. Dallas was extremely high on both of them, for good reason.

At a glance the Mavs stole Kyrie Irving from the Nets for Dinwiddie, Finney-Smith, '29 1st, couple 2nds. But how soon will Kyrie be unhappy? He's going from the most efficient scorer (KD) to the most ball dominant (Luka). Kyrie causes more problems for his team than opponents.

Give props to Mark Cuban .. he's got a generational player in Luka Doncic/ a basketball genius head coach in Jason Kidd .. and goes out and gets a top/15 talent in the NBA (Kyrie Irving) WITHOUT mortgaging the future .. the fit and contract extension can be figured out later ..

Irving made his trade request after talks about a new contract did not go to his liking. It was first reported by ESPN and The Athletic.

Irving is eligible for a contract extension, but the Nets refused to give him one last summer. His agent and stepmother, Shetellia Irving, told Bleacher Report last week she had reached out to the Nets regarding a new deal.

Irving, whose current deal with the Nets expires after this season, is eligible for a four-year contract worth as much as $1

A289 million). Irving and the Nets were thought to be moving toward a long-term extension in 2021, when Kevin Durant signed.

Instead, Irving proved himself to be unreliable, missing games for reasons unrelated to basketball, changing the Nets' thoughts about locking into a lengthy future with the point guard. A tweet was posted to Irving's account shortly before the first reports of the trade request came out.

"To my Peers: JUST BE YOURSelf and GROW! Keep people around who CELEBRATE YOU unconditionally and appreciates all of the hard work that gets put in. Distance yourself from the folks who manipulate, hate, and hurt," read the tweet.

Brooklyn are 31-20 this season, fourth in the Eastern Conference standings entering Friday, and have gone 4-7 since fellow All-Star Durant hurt his knee in a game at Miami on January 8. Durant also had asked the Nets for a trade this past summer, before cooler heads prevailed.

And it was at this time last year that Brooklyn traded James Harden, who was part of what the Nets thought would be a Big Three of him, Durant and Irving to the Philadelphia 76ers in a deal that brought Australian Ben Simmons to Brooklyn.

Whatever happens between now and Thursday, this is the start of another new saga surrounding Irving, who signed along with Durant in the summer of 2019. He was suspended by the Nets for what became eight games earlier this season after the team was dismayed by his repeated failure to "unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs."

That came shortly after Irving refused to issue the apology NBA Commissioner Adam Silver sought for posting a link to an antisemitic work on his Twitter feed. Irving also wound up losing his long relationship with Nike as part of the massive fallout from what he tweeted and the reactions that followed.

Irving also missed much of the 2021-22 season because of his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19, which left him ineligible to play in Brooklyn's home games for much of the season because of New York City rules put in place in response to the pandemic.

Kyrie Irving going to the Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie Irving going to the Dallas Mavericks

DALLAS — (AP) — Kyrie Irving is getting his wish. He’s getting traded.

And Luka Doncic is getting another All-Star to help him in Dallas.

The Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets agreed Sunday on a blockbuster trade: Irving — the super-talented and often-enigmatic eight-time All-Star point guard — heads to Dallas, ending the pairing with Kevin Durant that never really had a chance to click.

The Nets bring Spencer Dinwiddie back to Brooklyn along with Dorian Finney-Smith and a package of draft picks, according to a person familiar with the terms of the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not been finalized. Dallas also gets Markieff Morris.

The Athletic and ESPN first reported the trade agreement. It will become complete once the teams have a call with the NBA, which is standard for all trades.

The move comes just two days after Irving told the Nets that he wanted to be traded by Thursday's league deadline, after talks about a contract beyond this season didn't go to his liking. He wasn't with the Nets for their game Saturday, and by Sunday afternoon, his time with the franchise he cheered for growing up in New York and New Jersey appeared to be at an end.

"Thank you NetsWorld fans and supporters for the Love on and off the court," Irving tweeted early Monday morning. "I will forever be grateful I got to live out my dream I had as a Kid with y'all. It will always be Love from me and my family."

It was not immediately clear when Irving would make his debut with Dallas. The Mavericks play at Utah on Monday night. ESPN reported that Irving would take a physical in Dallas on Monday with a plan to join the team for a game Wednesday at the Los Angeles Clippers.

“My first reaction was it seemed like a really good move," Toronto coach Nick Nurse said Sunday before the Raptors faced Memphis. “(The Nets) got a lot of assets back for a guy who wasn’t going to be back, it seemed. I think that’s important to do. And I think for Dallas, they got a big-time star to go with the one they’ve got.”

Irving is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds this season. Doncic is averaging 33.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 8.2 assists. They instantly become one of the NBA's top duos, and figure to make Dallas even a stronger contender in a Western Conference that has no shortage of championship-capable teams.

Irving is, for now, scheduled to become a free agent after the season. The Los Angeles Lakers were believed to have been one of a few teams interested in Irving — a notion that could have reunited Irving with LeBron James, with whom he won a title with in Cleveland in 2016.

The trade does again pair Irving with Dallas general manager Nico Harrison, who was a Nike executive before taking over the Mavericks in 2021.

Irving had a relationship with Nike for the entirety of his NBA career until earlier this season, when the sneaker giant dropped him — and canceled the planned release of his next signature shoe just before it dropped — as part of the massive fallout from Irving posting a link to an antisemitic film on his Twitter account.

That was one of many drama-filled sagas that marked Irving’s time with the Nets. He wouldn’t get vaccinated against COVID-19 and, because of New York City workplace rules, had to miss most of Brooklyn’s home games last season. He also took two leaves of absence during the 2020-21 season.

He has also expressed no shortage of controversial opinions during his career — including repeated questioning whether the Earth was round before eventually apologizing to science teachers.

The various issues limited Irving to 143 games in three-plus seasons with the Nets, and he and Durant were together for just 74 of them after their celebrated pairing in the summer of 2019. Irving signed as a free agent while Durant joined the Nets on a sign-and-trade with Golden State.

After the Nets lost to Dallas at home in overtime in October, Irving said he saw traits of the Mavericks being “a great team.” And he spoke at length of how highly he thinks of Doncic’s game, after the Mavs star had a 41-point, 14-rebound, 11-assist masterpiece.

“I think first, we’ve got to discuss just how long he’s been playing professional basketball. I think it’s been since like 14, 15 years old,” Irving said that night. “He’s used to seeing so many different defenses, so many different roles that he’s played, I’m sure, overseas. And now that he’s in the NBA, you just see him. He plays at an incredible pace. He makes great decisions.”

Dinwiddie spent five seasons with the Nets and had his best season in 2019-20, when he averaged a career-best 20.6 points while starting 49 games, mostly when Irving was injured.

Bloody Elbow presents its fight week coverage when UFC makes its 16th overall trip to Australia, going ‘down under’ for the first time since UFC 243, which took place in Melbourne, way back in October of 2019. This Saturday, February 11th, from Perth, Western Australia, UFC features two title fights headlining their 13-bout UFC 284 PPV (pay-per-view) event.

The main event showcases a UFC Lightweight Championship bout between current champ, Islam Makhachev (23-1) and current UFC Featherweight Champ, Alexander Volkanovski (25-1). Two champions in two different divisions going to war has only occurred seven other times in UFC history. Volkanovski aims to be the reigning victor, which would make him the fourth man to be champion in two divisions simultaneously, fifth fighter overall, as well as the eighth person overall to win a title in different divisions.

Our second title tilt occurs in our Co-Main event when ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America’ alum & featherweight winner, No. 3 ranked, Yair Rodríguez, attempts to obtain the interim UFC Featherweight Championship belt by defeating No. 5 ranked, Josh Emmett.

Stick with bloodyelbow.com for all the previews, predictions, coverage, odds, & more, right here!

UFC 284’s main card of five bouts airs live on ESPN+, with a start time of 10/7PM ETPT, which are preceded by four Featured Prelim bouts airing at 8/5PM ETPT on ESPN/ESPN+, and four Early Prelims on UFC FightPass at 6/3PM ETPT. Odds for this 13-bout card at: DraftKings Sportsbook.

LeBron’s cryptic tweet as ‘significant obstacle’ spoils Lakers’ dream trade and Kyrie reunion

When LeBron James talks, or in this case tweets, everybody takes notice.

So, for all we know, every preseason the Los Angeles Lakers superstar schedules a bunch of nonsensical tweets for random times throughout the year knowing chaos will ensue.

The timing of his latest tweet though is too good not to have been intentional.

“Maybe It’s Me,” James posted in the wake of the Dallas Mavericks trading for Brooklyn Nets All-Star guard and former teammate Kyrie Irving.

If there is anyone who would be the best bet at deciphering that cryptic post it is NBA insider Marc Stein, who posed the question of how James could react in his latest newsletter on Substack.

“Will LeBron view the Lakers’ inability to acquire Irving as a last straw that leads him to push for his exit from Lakerland … or did he hold back on unreservedly vouching for Irving because the soon-to-be leading scorer in NBA history knew deep down that no one really can?” he wrote.

Stein expected the Lakers to strike a three-team deal with the Spurs and Nets that would see Irving reunite with James and Brooklyn get a combination of veterans and future draft picks.

There is no concrete reporting at this stage as to how the Lakers responded to the Mavericks’ inclusion of Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith in their trade offer to the Nets.

Although Stein wrote that “any measure of hesitancy” from L.A.’s side to get in a bidding war would be “understandable” given the baggage Irving brings with him.

For what it’s worth, we do know whether James thought Irving could help the Lakers turn their season around and even potentially win a title.

In fact, the 38-year-old had offered just one word — “Duh” — in response to that question.

But for the time being James will likely have to settle for working with what he has got, with the Lakers having already traded for Rui Hachimura before this week’s deadline.

L.A. seemed like the logical destination for Irving when he first demanded a trade for Brooklyn, opening up the opportunity for the Nets guard to reunite with James.

The Lakers had been hesitant to part ways with either of its two first-round picks unless it was to help land a superstar who would genuinely vault the franchise into title contention.

It is why they did not use either of the picks in a potential deal for Myles Turner or Buddy Hield.

But according to ESPN’s front office insider Bobby Marks, even the two first-round picks were not going to be the slam dunk in trade talks like the Lakers may have hoped.

“The two first-round picks that the Lakers had to offer, Russell Westbrook and whatever young players [they could offer] did nothing for the Nets,” he said.

“Draft picks did not do anything for Brooklyn based on still having Kevin Durant on this roster.”

Further to this, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that there was a “significant obstacle” in the early stages of talks between the Lakers and Nets.

According to Amick, the Nets were after a return that included two first-round picks (2027 and 2029) along with Russell Westbrook and two “promising young players”, putting forward Austin Reaves and Max Christie as examples.

The Lakers were said to be potentially willing to do that but only if Irving guaranteed to accept a two-year, $1

78.6 million extension as part of the deal.

That would then marry up his contract with that of James, who is signed with L.A. through the summer of 2025, with a player option in the 2024-25 season.

That is consistent with reporting from Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times, who claimed on Sunday that there was growing “pessimism” that the Lakers would successfully trade for Irving.

“Irving is expected to seek a four-year maximum contract, with the Lakers preferring a two-year deal, aligning with the two years remaining on James’ deal,” Woike wrote.

The Athletic though reports that Irving, who hits free agency this summer, “has been adamant” about wanting a full, four-year max deal nearing almost $1

    A289m).

ESPN’s NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski also reported the Nets preferred what the Mavericks had to offer in three future picks and, crucially, two genuine starting options in Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith.

Finney-Smith is one of the league’s best 3-and-D wings while Dinwiddie offers a much-needed option at guard to relieve some of scoring pressure on Durant.

Add in the future picks and Brooklyn has assets it can work with to strike more deals before the deadline or keep up its sleeve to also continue planning for the future.

Put simply, it has the Nets in a comfortable position where they should be good enough to still contend and potentially keep Durant happy so he doesn’t request another trade.

It is not all doom and gloom for LeBron and the Lakers though.

Irving could still walk away from the Mavericks in free agency this summer and end up at L.A.

Stein reported in his latest newsletter that L.A. was Irving’s “preferred destination” but that one of Nets owner Joe Tsai’s “presumed objectives” was making sure he was not traded to the Lakers.

As for where the Lakers could go this season, there is unlikely to be anyone of Irving’s calibre on the trade table, although the Raptors still remain the most intriguing team to watch should they decide to become sellers at the deadline.

Toronto guard Fred VanVleet, Utah’s Mike Conley, Charlotte’s Terry Rozier and Houston’s Eric Gordon have all been mentioned in the past month as possible targets.

As Kyle Goon, a Lakers beat reporter put it, the “biggest question” for the Lakers now is whether the failed Irving bid could lead to any fractions in the locker room — and more specifically whether it could see Westbrook moved on before the upcoming deadline.

  • The Dallas Mavericks in their Sunday trade for Kyrie Irving decided the future couldn t wait It had been a calm quiet afternoon before this league s latest blockbuster deal a maneuver that landed Irving and Markieff Morris from the Nets in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie Dorian Finney Smith the Mavericks unprotected 2029 first round pick and their 2027 and 2029 second rounders as first reported by The Athletic s Shams Charania It was a decisive proactive move that the Mavericks front office chose to reshape its roster around Luka Don i something that was inevitable at some point There are questions Oh there are an endless number of them surrounding the move for a 30 year old star who has a long history of sour relationships with the franchises that have employed him and the league in which he plays But the crux of the Mavericks decision to trade for Irving came down to a fairly simple point They d rather deal with those questions now ones attached to the most talented teammate Don i has ever played with than future questions they cannot and would not know until or if another opportunity appeared Irving comes to the Mavericks at a time when it has never been more clear that the team needs change Dallas sits sixth in the Western Conference and its 28 26 record is its worst through 54 games since Don i s rookie year If Dallas has its way this won t be the only roster change that occurs prior to Thursday s 3 p m ET trade deadline according to team sources granted anonymity so that they could speak freely The decision makers are continuing to explore other trades and it s clear the roster lacks wing defending and depth after Finney Smith s departure While Don i had expressed a desire for roster improvement in the past weeks as first reported by ESPN the trade for Irving was driven by the team s key figureheads with longstanding relationships with him Substack s Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks consulted Don i prior to the move and he gave his approval Head coach Jason Kidd is a Hall of Fame point guard who Irving has long admired and general manager Nico Harrison built a connection with Irving in his prior role as a Nike executive Harrison s relationships with the league s stars was touted as a key reason Dallas hired him following front office turmoil in 2021 In trading for Irving and doing so one year after dealing away Kristaps Porzingis Harrison has chosen his first team building test Irving s basketball fit next to Don i should be in no dispute Don i might be the league s most dominant offensive force an unstoppable dilemma who caused coaching staffs to become too frazzled to even strategize against If only considering Don i s minutes on the floor the Mavericks would have the league s most efficient offense 120 8 points per 100 possessions but they drop to the league s worst without him Dinwiddie although a superb fit next to Don i couldn t replicate the team s offensive success on his own It s no wonder the Mavericks still haven t won a game in the seven they ve played without their talismanic Slovenian Now the team has replaced Dinwiddie for Irving an offensive marvel just as dangerous playing off the ball than with it Next to Don i he can provide secondary scoring in the same manner he once did for LeBron James when that duo won a championship for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 Without Don i Irving is much more likely to replicate league average offense output in the same manner he did in Brooklyn where the lineups with him and without Kevin Durant averaged 116 7 points per 100 possessions this season nearly 10 points more than the Don i less lineups have done this year in Dallas But even if the Mavericks become the league s best offense until the season s end it s everywhere else that the questions arise The team s 23rd ranked defense won t be helped by Irving s addition or the departure of Finney Smith though the Mavericks hope to bolster it with another trade later this week The team s future with Irving becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer must be addressed with a looming decision whether to re sign him In the wake of this trade league sources believe the Mavericks wouldn t have traded two starters for Irving if they didn t have plans to re sign him this summer He s eligible for a two year 1 Credit https theathletic com 4158540 2023 02 05 deal this summer Irving has only played 143 games over the past four seasons thanks to a combination of injuries suspensions and policy violations He was suspended in November by the Nets for a minimum of five games without pay after he posted a link to a documentary promoting antisemitic views on his social media accounts then repeatedly refused to apologize for doing so He ended up missing eight games If Dallas doesn t re sign Irving this summer the team would have around 1 Credit https theathletic com 4158540 2023 02 05 kyrie irving mavericks luka doncic 30 million in cap space in an uninspiring free agency market to retool its roster around Don i Several sources indicated the team prioritized Josh Green a blossoming 22 year old wing to not being included in the trade despite Brooklyn s strong interest in him Dallas also made sure to hold onto rookie guard Jaden Hardy a raw combo guard who currently has minor trade value but meaningful upside in the coming seasons There are paths to improvement without Irving on the team but they look much smoother if Irving can be retained and can consistently be the player who has often been one of the league s most electric scorers That s the most optimistic path forward for this team as it seeks to build a top title contender around the 23 year old Don i a player who has made it exceedingly clear on the court and otherwise that he is ready to win now But there are other more fraught paths that exist in this deal that the Mavericks made on Sunday For one as The Athletic reported Friday some members of the team s front office expressed doubts that Don i would have patience for Irving if he were to miss time for non basketball reasons For all of Irving s unmistakable talent on the basketball court it matters little if he s not on it Dallas didn t need to find itself in this situation The Mavericks had a younger combo guard proven to work with Don i just last season one without nearly as many questions as Irving in Jalen Brunson The team s failure to re sign him last summer or at least to extend him prior to last summer has put it in a tenuous situation where its future must involve riskier propositions for more mercurial players like Irving But this is the wager that Dallas made Instead of an uncertain future and a bound to happen move for a yet unknown star with his own set of questions the Mavericks got Irving someone who is at least known in his unknowable eccentricities He s at least here now flying to Dallas on Monday Whether it works for the Mavericks or fails in a manner reminiscent of every prior stop that Irving has made whether Kidd and Harrison are the figures to finally understand how to make the Irving experience succeed whether Don i is the teammate who can finally replicate Irving s highest highs at least Dallas started this inevitable future now Subscribe to The Athletic for in depth coverage of your favorite players teams leagues and clubs Try a Why the Mavericks decided the Kyrie Irving trade was a wager they had to make

Why the Mavericks decided the Kyrie Irving trade was a wager they had to make

The Dallas Mavericks, in their Sunday trade for Kyrie Irving, decided the future couldn’t wait.

It had been a calm, quiet afternoon before this league’s latest blockbuster deal, a maneuver that landed Irving and Markieff Morris from the Nets in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, the Mavericks’ unprotected 2029 first-round pick, and their 2027 and 2029 second-rounders, as first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania. It was a decisive, proactive move that the Mavericks’ front office chose to reshape its roster around Luka Dončić, something that was inevitable at some point.

There are questions. Oh, there are an endless number of them surrounding the move for a 30-year-old star who has a long history of sour relationships with the franchises that have employed him and the league in which he plays. But the crux of the Mavericks’ decision to trade for Irving came down to a fairly simple point: They’d rather deal with those questions now, ones attached to the most talented teammate Dončić has ever played with, than future questions they cannot and would not know until (or if) another opportunity appeared.

Irving comes to the Mavericks at a time when it has never been more clear that the team needs change. Dallas sits sixth in the Western Conference, and its 28-26 record is its worst through 54 games since Dončić’s rookie year. If Dallas has its way, this won’t be the only roster change that occurs prior to Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, according to team sources granted anonymity so that they could speak freely. The decision-makers are continuing to explore other trades, and it’s clear the roster lacks wing defending and depth after Finney-Smith’s departure.

While Dončić had expressed a desire for roster improvement in the past weeks, as first reported by ESPN, the trade for Irving was driven by the team’s key figureheads with longstanding relationships with him. (Substack’s Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks consulted Dončić prior to the move and he gave his approval.) Head coach Jason Kidd is a Hall of Fame point guard who Irving has long admired, and general manager Nico Harrison built a connection with Irving in his prior role as a Nike executive. Harrison’s relationships with the league’s stars was touted as a key reason Dallas hired him following front office turmoil in 2021. In trading for Irving — and doing so one year after dealing away Kristaps Porzingis — Harrison has chosen his first team-building test.

Irving’s basketball fit next to Dončić should be in no dispute. Dončić might be the league’s most dominant offensive force, an unstoppable dilemma who caused  coaching staffs to become too frazzled to even strategize against. If only considering Dončić’s minutes on the floor, the Mavericks would have the league’s most efficient offense (120.8 points per 100 possessions), but they drop to the league’s worst without him. Dinwiddie, although a superb fit next to Dončić, couldn’t replicate the team’s offensive success on his own. It’s no wonder the Mavericks still haven’t won a game in the seven they’ve played without their talismanic Slovenian.

Now the team has replaced Dinwiddie for Irving, an offensive marvel just as dangerous playing off the ball than with it. Next to Dončić, he can provide secondary scoring in the same manner he once did for LeBron James when that duo won a championship for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. Without Dončić, Irving is much more likely to replicate league-average offense output in the same manner he did in Brooklyn, where the lineups with him and without Kevin Durant averaged 116.7 points per 100 possessions this season — nearly 10 points more than the Dončić-less lineups have done this year in Dallas.

But even if the Mavericks become the league’s best offense until the season’s end, it’s everywhere else that the questions arise. The team’s 23rd-ranked defense won’t be helped by Irving’s addition or the departure of Finney-Smith, though the Mavericks hope to bolster it with another trade later this week.

The team’s future, with Irving becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer, must be addressed with a looming decision whether to re-sign him. In the wake of this trade, league sources believe the Mavericks wouldn’t have traded two starters for Irving if they didn’t have plans to re-sign him this summer. He’s eligible for a two-year, $1

    198.5 million deal this summer.

Irving has only played 143 games over the past four seasons thanks to a combination of injuries, suspensions and policy violations. He was suspended in November by the Nets for a minimum of five games without pay after he posted a link to a documentary promoting antisemitic views on his social media accounts, then repeatedly refused to apologize for doing so. He ended up missing eight games.

30 million in cap space in an uninspiring free agency market to retool its roster around Dončić. Several sources indicated the team prioritized Josh Green, a blossoming 22-year-old wing, to not being included in the trade despite Brooklyn’s strong interest in him. Dallas also made sure to hold onto rookie guard Jaden Hardy, a raw combo guard who currently has minor trade value, but meaningful upside in the coming seasons.

There are paths to improvement without Irving on the team, but they look much smoother if Irving can be retained and can consistently be the player who has often been one of the league’s most electric scorers.

That’s the most optimistic path forward for this team as it seeks to build a top title contender around the 23-year-old Dončić, a player who has made it exceedingly clear — on the court and otherwise — that he is ready to win now. But there are other, more fraught paths that exist in this deal that the Mavericks made on Sunday. For one, as The Athletic reported Friday, some members of the team’s front office expressed doubts that Dončić would have patience for Irving if he were to miss time for non-basketball reasons. For all of Irving’s unmistakable talent on the basketball court, it matters little if he’s not on it.

Dallas didn’t need to find itself in this situation. The Mavericks had a younger combo guard proven to work with Dončić just last season, one without nearly as many questions as Irving, in Jalen Brunson. The team’s failure to re-sign him last summer — or, at least, to extend him prior to last summer — has put it in a tenuous situation where its future must involve riskier propositions for more mercurial players like Irving.

But this is the wager that Dallas made. Instead of an uncertain future and a bound-to-happen move for a yet-unknown star with his own set of questions, the Mavericks got Irving, someone who is at least known in his unknowable eccentricities. He’s at least here now, flying to Dallas on Monday.

Whether it works for the Mavericks or fails in a manner reminiscent of every prior stop that Irving has made, whether Kidd and Harrison are the figures to finally understand how to make the Irving experience succeed, whether Dončić is the teammate who can finally replicate Irving’s highest highs, at least Dallas started this inevitable future now.

‘That’s the fight that people want to see’

News Corp is a network of leading companies in the worlds of diversified media, news, education, and information services.

UFC president Dana White believes Michael Chandler is the opponent fight fans most want to see Conor McGregor face in his comeback bout.

‘Notorious’ hasn’t fought since fracturing his tibia and fibula at UFC 264 in July 2021 but is now fully fit and has been booked to face Chandler later this year.

The show gives up-and-coming fighters the chance to compete for a place in the UFC under the guidance of two established stars who act as opposing coaches.

McGregor previously coached on the show alongside Urijah Faber eight years ago in a series many people say was one of the best in the 30-season history of the show.

Speaking to the media for the first time since announcing his biggest star has a fight booked, White revealed his reasons for booking Chandler as McGregor’s comeback opponent.

He said: “I think that’s the fight that people want to see right now.

“I think that’s an exciting fight. The fact that this season is on ESPN. If you think about ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ and how long, it’s been around. It started on Spike, we had a run on FOX and now its going to be on ESPN the network.

“It’s exciting, fun and a massive opportunity for the contestants on the show. It’s a big deal. This is a big season, it’s a big deal.”

Chandler has been relentlessly but respectfully calling out the UFC superstar over the past year and many expect the two to get along while shooting TUF.

However, the UFC boss thinks that they might eventually grate on each other and we could have some interesting clashes that will help make their upcoming fight even bigger.

White added: “It will be interesting to see with Chandler and Conor.

“I think there’s a level of respect between those two but when you get inside, see each other every day and are crossing paths… things happen. I don’t know how it’s going to play out and that’s what makes the season fun.”

White confirmed that McGregor and Chandler will begin filming TUF later this month and the show will run from May 30 to August 15 – meaning their fight will not take place until late August at the earliest.

The 53-year-old insisted that there’s nothing set in stone in regard to the fight weight, date, or venue and revealed those things will be decided in the next few weeks.

White concluded: “We don’t have any details for the fight yet. I don’t have a place. I don’t have a date. I don’t have any of that stuff yet.

“The coaches are probably going to get here the Monday after the Super Bowl and we’ll get a lot of this stuff figured out.”

McGregor is desperate to get his career back on track after winning just one fight since picking up his second UFC title by beating Eddie Alvarez in 2016.

Chandler has been fun to watch since joining MMA’s premier promotion in 2021 but has just two wins from his first five UFC bouts and will need to be better than he’s been to walk away from the biggest fight of his career victoriously.

NFC takes down AFC in revamped all-star game

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2023 Pro Bowl Games champion: Eli Manning and the NFC.

The younger Manning led his team to victory over Peyton and the AFC by way of two victories in the flag football round of competition, netting 12 points in the overall competition. Even so, the NFC needed to overcome a 21-15 deficit to start the final competition after the AFC five skills competitions and the second flag football game.

Geno Smith led the NFC to a 33-27 victory in the first game over Tyler Huntley and the AFC, while Trevor Lawrence led a comeback performance in Game 2 over Jared Goff and the NFC, 18-13. The NFC overcame the six-point deficit in Game 3, with Kirk Cousins-led NFC beating Derek Carr and Co. to win the whole thing 35-33.

It was about as good a result as the NFL could have hoped for, with the game coming down to the final minutes in a close game.

6:29 p.m.: Eli Manning and Co. beat older brother Peyton and the AFC 35-33 in the new and improved 2023 Pro Bowl Games.

6:27 p.m.: That is indeed the call and that will end the game! Poyer held Hockenson (though even if he hadn't, Fitzpatrick would have been penalized for an illegal rush). AFC coach Peyton Manning is livid, arguing that Cousins should be penalized for taking a knee.

6:27 p.m.: Cousins' ball falls incomplete but there's a flag in the end zone ... is this game going to end on defensive holding?

6:25 p.m.: Cousins to his Vikings teammate Jefferson for a decent gain, but the receiver is tackled short. That forces the AFC to use its final timeout with the NFC needing to convert fourth-and-goal at the 1.

6:24 p.m.: Cousins gets a small completion, forcing the AFC to use its first timeout.

6:23 p.m.: An incomplete pass stops the clock with a minute left in the game.

6:23 p.m.: Looks like the NFC is pretty much going to run this clock out with a running clock and the AFC having only two timeouts with which to work.

6:19 p.m.: Another halfback pass (this one from Jacobs) doesn't work out. He threw it way behind the intended receiver and has it nearly picked off. The NFC gets the ball back 35-33 with just two minutes remaining.

6:18 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. Carr takes the blitz in stride and finds Knox in the flat for a touchdown and six points. The AFC is going for the 2-point conversion with the clock winding toward the two-minute warning.

6:17 p.m.: Turpin with another timely blitz to set up fourth-and-goal. This is a must-score opportunity for the AFC.

6:17 p.m.: Third-and-goal coming up after a Chase drop in the end zone and decent run by Josh Jacobs.

6:13 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. Cousins to Kittle for six! Then Cousins to Jefferson for the PAT! The NFC leads 35-27 in the final half of play.

6:13 p.m.: Cousins is leading the NFC on a dink-and-dunk drive.

6:11 p.m.: The NFC starts the second half with the ball, and can lengthen its lead with a score. Cousins promptly throws a near-interception to Bills safety Jordan Poyer.

6:07 p.m.: Cousins hits Lamb for the 1-point conversion! That gives NFC a 28-27 halftime lead after starting the game down 21-15.

6:06 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. Cousins just tosses the ball to Juszczyk in the end zone, tying the game at 27-27 — point-after attempt pending.

6:04 p.m.: Cousins connects with Juszczyk, but he's downed at the 1-yard line. The NFC uses its second and final timeout of the game to set up a potential game-tying score heading into halftime with 3 seconds remaining.

6:03 p.m.: Cousins throws a backward pass to Juszczyk in the end zone; he then throws it to a wide open Jefferson for a big gain. Timeout NFC with 27 seconds left.

6:01 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. And there's Carr's first score of the game with a rolling touchdown pass to Chase. That gives the AFC the lead back with just 35 seconds remaining — 27-21 following an incompletion on the 1-point attempt.

5:59 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. Cousins finds St. Brown, hero of the best catch event, to tie the game. But Cousins can't connect with Kittle on the ensuing drive, keeping the score tied 21-21 with just 1:07 left in the half.

    5:55 p.m.: Two-minute warning (1:57).

5:54 p.m.: Interception, AFC. No one wants to score! Cardinals safety Budda Baker picks Carr off and gives it back to the NFC with a chance to tie the game.

5:51 p.m.: Turnover on downs, NFC. The AFC returns the favor with a blitz from ... Hill? Either way, it worked for the best: The AFC denies a scoring opportunity and takes over at its 1-yard line.

5:49 p.m.: Turnover on downs, AFC. Turpin comes on a blitz on fourth-and-mid to turn the ball over for the AFC. Now the NFC gets its chance with Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins leading the charge.

5:46 p.m.: The AFC starts with the ball, and Raiders quarterback Derek Carr gets the start. He connects with Diggs for a long gain, but it's undone by an illegal shift.

5:45 p.m.: Remember, the AFC starts with a 21-15 lead as a result of the score from the previous skills competitions in the Pro Bowl Games.

4:48 p.m.: Turnover on downs, NFC. It ultimately doesn't matter as Goff overthrows his intended target. The AFC wins Game 2 in a defensive struggle.

4:46 p.m.: The AFC had the NFC stopped short on fourth down, but offsetting penalties — illegal blitz by the former and an illegal stiff-arm on the NFC — gives the latter one more down with 31 seconds left.

4:45 p.m.: Things getting close here. NFC has fourth-and-19 and has only one timeout with 39 seconds left for the go-ahead score.

4:44 p.m.: Saints linebacker Demario Davis bats Lawrence's pass down, keeping the AFC's lead to just five. NFC can take the lead with a score.

4:40 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. Lawrence tries to go deep a few times, but finally hits Stefon Diggs over the top for a touchdown! He didn't get both feet in bounds but it's the Pro Bowl, so it's fine. The two-minute warning is here, so the AFC will attempt the 2-point conversion after.

4:36 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. Goff hits Dalvin Cook for an easy touchdown, then threads the needle between Mosley and Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick for a go-ahead score. NFC leads 13-12.

4:33 p.m.: Interception, NFC! No score! The AFC gets a little tricky, throwing a backward pass to Stefon Diggs before he tries to throw it to Lawrence in the end zone. Trevon Diggs intercepts it and very nearly returns it for a score.

4:32 p.m.: Interception, AFC! Pat Surtain II jumps Goff's route in defense of Justin Jefferson and returns it near the end zone, setting up an easy scoring opportunity.

4:32 p.m.: NFC starts the second half on offense, needing a score.

4:27 p.m.: An incompletion ends the NFC's scoring drive before the clock runs out, and it'll have a 12-6 deficit to start the second half.

4:24 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. One play later, Lawrence hands the ball off to Henry on a zone read to give the AFC the lead. That's a bit easier for Henry than on a typical NFL Sunday. AFC leads 12-6 over the NFC after Trevon Diggs blankets his older brother.

4:23 p.m.: Turnover on downs, NFC. Jets cornerback Justin Hardee Sr. blitzes on fourth down, causing Goff to stumble and put the ball on the ground. The AFC will take over at about the 19-yard line.

    4:19 p.m.: There's a two-minute warning in the first half. Not as high-scoring as Game 1.

4:17 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. Lawrence responds with a nice long drive to tie the game with an easy pitch-and-catch with Adams. The 1-point attempt is no good, and the conferences remain tied.

4:12 p.m.: INTERCEPTION RETURN FOR TOUCHDOWN, NFC. The NFC sends a blitz with Micah Parsons, forcing Lawrence to throw on the run to avoid the safety. Alexander picks it off and easily returns it for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt between Goff and McCaffrey falls incomplete, giving the NFC a 6-0 lead.

4:11 p.m.: The AFC's second snap hits the turf just short of the end zone, setting up third-and-mid ... from the 2, for some reason.

4:10 p.m.: Some miscommunication between Lawrence and his intended pass-catcher, Stefon Diggs. The latter's brother, Trevon Diggs, is in defense of the Bills receiver. Doubt there will be much slacking off on his part.

4:09 p.m.: The Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence gets the second start at QB for the AFC, while Jared Goff will get the NFC nod.

4:08 p.m.: Here comes the second 7-on-7 flag football game. It's all knotted up at 12 apiece following a win each by the NFC in two events between flag football games: The AFC won kick-tac-toe while the NFC won the gridiron gauntlet.

3:50 p.m.: FINAL: NFC wins Game 1 33-27 over the AFC after time runs out on the latter. That's worth six points for the NFC in the overall standings, tying the Pro Bowl Games 9-9.

3:45 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. Smith finds Lamb again for the go-ahead score — the conference declines a holding penalty on Ramsey, making the score 32-27. A successful 1-point conversion makes it 33-26 NFC with just 12 seconds left.

3:42 p.m.: Huntley connects with Bills tight end Dawson Knox for the successful point-after attempt, giving the AFC a 27-26 lead with 2:00 left to play in Game 1.

3:41 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. Huntley finds Chase all alone in the back of the end zone! Jaire Alexander stood idle as he watched the two play catch. AFC has a chance to take the lead back with a successful point-after conversion.

3:41 p.m.: Peyton Manning is arguing with refs over some sort of rule change. Either way, Huntley finds Derrick Henry for a first-down gain.

3:37 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. Turns out, none of that matters. Juszczyk tosses a flea-flicker back to Smith, who then finds him wide open underneath for another touchdown. The 1-point conversion is no good, though. NFC leads 26-20.

3:36 p.m.: A Smith touchdown is negated because he was in the "no-run zone." He scrambled after C.J. Mosley attempted to blitz him, which is the only scenario where QBs can run, so not sure what the issue there is.

3:35 p.m.: This time it's Smith's turn for a receiver — Kittle — to drop an easy pass. One play later, he finds KaVontae Turpin underneath to set up third-and-goal from the 3.

3:34 p.m.: NFC gets the ball out of halftime. The conference scored on all but the last drive in the first half.

3:30 p.m.: Smith's pass is intercepted by Derwin James in the end zone. He returns it but can't get in the end zone, tying the game at 20-20 heading into the second half.

3:28 p.m.: NFC gets across midfield and calls timeout with one second left for one more play before halftime.

3:27 p.m.: Huntley to Adams in the back of the end zone is good for a 2-point conversion, tying the game at 20-20 with just seconds left on the clock.

3:25 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. Huntley throws to Adams who pitches it back to Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill for the score. Jalen Ramsey then bowls over the Miami pass-catcher, resulting in an unnecessary roughness penalty — incomprehensible for a flag football game. The resulting yardage will result in a 2-pint try for the AFC.

3:21 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. They're scoring at will out there! (By design, obviously(. Smith this time finds Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson, not only for the long touchdown but also the 1-point attempt. The NFC leads 20-12 with 1:09 left in the first.

3:19 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. There's another Huntley-Andrews connection — almost too easy for the AFC. The point-after attempt is again no good, keeping the NFC in the lead, 13-12.

    3:15 p.m.: That's a two-minute warning.

3:13 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. One play later, Smith throws a beautiful corner route to CeeDee Lamb for a score! The NFC lengthens their lead to 13-6 after the failed 2-point conversion.

3:12 p.m.: Turnover on downs, AFC. Huntley has another ball dropped, this time by Ja'Marr Chase in the end zone, to turn the ball over on downs. That gives the NFC the ball at midfield.

3:11 p.m.: NFC sends a blitz, but Smith avoids the pressure and connects with Adams for a nice gain (even though replay shows the ball hit the ground). That sets up fourth-and-mid.

3:10 p.m.: Huntley throws a beautiful bottle over the middle to Davante Adams, but the ball bounces off the receiver's hands. Two plays later and the AFC faces third-and-mid.

3:08 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, NFC. And there's an NFC response! Geno Smith throws to George Kittle in the flats, and none of the AFC defenders can pull the flag as he runs unimpeded for the score. The Smith-Kyle Juszczyk connection is good for a point to give the NFC an 7-6 lead.

3:06 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, AFC. Tyler Huntley to Ravens teammate Mark Andrews for the first score of the game! AFC is going for a 1-point attempt ... and doesn't get it. It's still 6-0 AFC in the first quarter.

3 p.m.: The AFC is on offense first, already driving down the field in their opening drive. The AFC has second-and-goal from 6 yards out.

The 2023 Pro Bowl games will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, marking the second time the venue hosts the event. Prior to 2022, the event was held in Orlando, Fla. over the previous four seasons. Prior to that, Aloha Stadium in Honolulu was home to the Pro Bowl.
