NANNM kick-starts 2022 annual FCT Nurses week/scientific confab

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) FCT Chapter on Friday kick-started its 2022 annual Nurses conference with a Friday congregational prayer.

Mr Musa Salka, State Auditor 2, FCT NANNM, told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview that the week-long event was started with prayer in order to achieve success throughout the programme.

Salka said, ”if you want success and progress in everything you want to do, you just have to start it with prayer and that the association had always done that in its previous programmes.

“We the Muslims in the association gathered in the Mosque, asked for a special prayer after the normal Jumaat prayer and that has been what we always do.

“In anything you are doing, you have to put God first, He is the overseer, He is the leader, He is the protector, we have always looked for His guidance, protection over us and the forthcoming events.

“There are so many programmes lined up for the nurses week, nurses are not only known to be in the hospitals, we are diversified and knowledgeable.

“On Sunday, we are having Church service as part of the programme at ECWA Church, Wuse 2, and on Monday, we have roadwalk, and at the same day, we have novelty football match among the medical workers.

“The essence of the match is to catch fun, to show people that nurses are everywhere, not only in the hospitals, if you bring them out, they can showcase their talents,” Salka said.

Also speaking, Mr Sarki Mohammed, Ministry of Defence (MOD) Unit, FCT NANNM, advised Nigerians to always seek medical solution anytime they felt pains in their bodies.

According to Mohammed, most Nigerians do not take their health serious, cautioning that such acts could result to unexpected health emergencies.

“Most Nigerians don’t even care to go to the hospital or have their bodies tested, many don’t know the current development in the healthcare sector.

“My advice for Nigerians is that they should go to the hospitals immediately once you are sick, the doctors will examine a lot of things in your body, early detection of sickness saves a lot of things,” he said.

USAID, stakeholders seek inter-faith solutions to breastfeeding barriers in Sokoto

A USAID-assisted NGO, ‘Breakthrough Action, Nigeria’ and other stakeholders on family health in Sokoto State, on Tuesday  brainstormed on ways to address barriers to breastfeeding based on religious perspectives.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that this was at a  symposium organised by the NGO that was attended by religious and traditional leaders from across the state.

Alhaji Adamu Romo, the Executive Secretary,  Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SSPHDA), said the symposium would scale up the need for exclusive breastfeeding.

“Presently, we require a lot of enlightenment on exclusive breastfeeding, because our people are very much ignorant of the fact that breastfeeding is a key source of child survival.

“Therefore, as government officials, we will continue to appreciate the development partners for their tremendous efforts toward addressing the barriers in the society.

“I want to assure you that we will continue to remain closer to you in order to succeed on the task.

”This is our responsibility and we will continue to remain committed to it,” he said.

Romo added that the symposium provided an opportunity to highlight the responsibility of all members in the family, while urging the participants to judiciously utilise it.

In her presentation, Hajiya Halima Sirajo, the Deputy Director, Nursing Services, Hospital Services Management Board (HSMB), emphasised the need for more breastfeeding by mothers at night.

According to her, breastfeeding at night has great impact in protecting and preventing the baby from many infections and malnutrition.

She urged the stakeholders to sustain enlightenment on the need for exclusive breastfeeding and the necessity for breastfeeding within an hour of delivery.

“This will enable the production of children that are more intelligent and prevent brain blockage,” she said.

Also speaking, Ms Roseline Yakubu, Nutrition Officer, Breakthrough Action, Nigeria, said the activity was part of the NGO’s commitment to celebrate the 2022 Global Breastfeeding Week. “This is in order to enlighten the general public on promoting exclusive breastfeeding and its numerous benefits to greater future generation.

“Today,  we are meeting with health personnel, religious and traditional leaders to deliberate on ways forward.

”This is in order to extend the massages back to our respective communities,” she said.

NAN reports that papers were presented on “Religious perspective of breastfeeding,” by Dr Jabir Mai-Hula of Sokoto State University and Rev. Ayuba Matthew of ECWA Church.

Northern Christians won’t vote for Atiku: VON DG

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) Mr Osita Okechukwu, says Northern Christians would not vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Okechukwu also a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said this while answering questions from journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

Reacting to the Northern Christians outrage over APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Okechukwu said he shared their anguish on identity politics and fears.

“But I know that in the fullness of time, contrary to the speculations of spin doctors, they would not vote for the former Vice President,” he said.

He assured that whatever marginalisation the Northern Christians suffered today, they would suffer no more if the APC standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu becomes the President in 2023. “Our first slogan in APC is change.

    Our mantra is change.

We will not remain static, never.

We will change whatever is not working.

All we ask Nigerians is to give us another 8 years as you gave our sister political party, the PDP.

“Regarding the Northern Christians outrage over APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket; if any pundit thinks they will vote for Atiku, my answer is ‘Capital No’.

No matter what, they know he is bringing nothing new to the table.

“Find out, Northern Christians do not trust Atiku.

They know his cherry-picking antics as per rule of law and rotation convention.

They also know his ambivalence on religion, as demonstrated in the late Deborah’s imbroglio in Sokoto, which is still fresh in the mind of every Christian.

“Secondly, they know that Tinubu and by extension the Yorubas’ DNA is devoid of religious extremism and bigotry.

Yorubas celebrate Eid and Xmas together,” Okechukwu said.

The Enugu APC chieftain added:“As a matter of fact, without being personal, one was a witness when my dear friend Babachir Lawal informed the world during his Thanksgiving Church Service at ECWA Wuse, that Tinubu and Pa Akande were instrumental to his appointment as Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF).

“May one ask, is it possible that neither Tinubu nor Pa Akande didn’t know any Northern Muslim then to lobby for?

Or has Tinubu changed 360 degrees?

” “Thirdly, they’re fully aware that Atiku has violently breached the rotation convention of president from north to south and painfully by extension of the PDP’s Constitution.

For Atiku rotation convention is north-south geopolitically benched, only when he wins the president.

If he fails as in 2019, the rotation convention goal post must be shifted.

“It is on record that Atiku enjoyed and celebrated rotation convention when in 2018, Governor Nyeson Wike and other Southerners in obedience to the letters and spirit of Section 3(c) of PDP’s Constitution allowed only Northern presidential aspirants to contest in Port Harcourt.

“But in 2022 PDP presidential primary election he fought tooth and nail to jettison the rotation convention, arguing childishly that it is not applicable to PDP?

Hence breached Section 3(c) of PDP’s Constitution.

Some of us Southerners are as hurt as Northern Christians over this willful breach.

” “Yes, faith balance is very important in building bonds of inclusion, so is rotation convention which bonds north and south, and cements inclusion and corporate existence.

This is why I continue to salute APC’s Northern Governors, majority of whom unlike PDP’s Governors by this noble patriotism, restored equity, natural justice and national loyalty in our clime.

“If PDP Governors had obeyed rotation convention from north to south, to be honest there wouldn’t be the imperative of APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket.

They cannot benefit from their negligence.

I stand to be contradicted,” Okechukwu stated emphatically.

On the anger of the Northern Christians over a seeming premeditated plan to exclude all Christians in both the APC party structure and government, Okechukwu maintained that he shares their plight, assuring that such marginalisation would not repeat itself under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President.

“We are witnesses when Dr Umaru Dikko as Transport Minister, was more powerful than Vice President, when Mrs Diezani Madueke as Petroleum Minister was more powerful than Vice President and recently, how powerful Abba Kyari (of blessed memory) was as Chief of Staff to the President.

Therefore, Christians nationwide should give APC another chance.

” He said every Nigerian knew Tinubu’s antecedents as Governor of Lagos State, describing him as a master of sourcing for the best from every creed, tribe and tongue.

2023: CAN tasks parties’ flagbearers on issues affecting Nigerians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised all candidates of political parties seeking positions in 2023 general elections to be sensitive to issues affecting the country and address them.

The CAN President, Rev. Samson Supo Ayokunle, gave the advice on Sunday at an Inter-Denominational Church Service to mark 2022 Democracy Day in Abuja, with the theme: “ More than Conquerors”.

Ayokunle was represented by the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, who is also the President and Founder of The Sword of The Spirit Ministries International.

Ayokunle, in the sermon titled “Building a prosperous and united Nigeria”, with the Bible text taken from 2 Sam. 23:3, called on political leaders, particularly those contesting for 2023 elections to pay attention to the pains, concerns, apprehensions of citizens and address them.

He said that the country needed leaders who are sensitive to issues, making bold, fair and just decisions that bring in Nigeria together as one, united nation.

“The scripture says he that those that rule over men must be justice, ruling in the fair of God.

“We urge our politicians, those seeking to rule us come 2023 in the name of God Almighty, please see to it that in your plans, in your decisions, your utterances, your campaign, bring us together as one nation.

“You can rule if there is a nation. If there is no nation or the nation is at war, you cannot rule. Please in your plans, in your decisions, in your campaigns, in your utterances, close the fault lines and do not make them wider.

“This is the wise counsel of the church because we care for this nation, Nigeria.

“Righteousness exalts a nation and if there is no justice, if there is no equity, if there is no fairness, there is no righteousness,” he said.

Ayokunle said that leaders to be elected in 2023 must handle the issue of ethnicity and religion with wisdom and sensitivity.

“We want a nation where everyone is treated fairly, equally, no matter the tribe or the ethnic or whatever parts of the nation you come from. A nation where every Nigerian can call my nation.

“We want our leaders to take decisions that we promote a sense of belonging to bring all Nigerians together from the East, West, North, South, from every part to see Nigeria as their own. This needs to be handled.

“Religion has become a major issue in our national political life. And our politicians need to handle this in a very, very wise, bold and sensitive way.

“To bring Nigerians together, to let Nigerians know that irrespective of your faith, you can practice your faith without fear or molestation in any part of the nation Where you find yourself.

“This is a cry of the church and the leaders of the church are speaking out boldly, very clearly, so that we can handle this situation as it should be handled.”

Ayokunle therefore urged the candidates to look into issues of corruption, insecurity, increasing debt, brain drain in the health sector and challenges facing the education sector.

“Across the nation among the youths in the restlessness to cause trouble. This has to be addressed.

“The education system is in shambles. Public universities are been closed for months and this needs to be addressed decisively.

“Nigerians believe that we have enough money to make our universities a pride, not only to this nation but to the world as they used to be.

“If you look at the health system. The health system has nothing for the people. Our health professionals are frustrated already.

“The doctors that we spent so much money to educate and to raise are migrating in droves to other worlds and back at home quacks are filling the gaps and our people are paying very dearly. This too needs be addressed.”

Ayokunle also warned political parties against flying a Muslim-Muslim ticket for 2023 presidential election, saying it will do Nigeria no good.

He said that every part of Nigeria and religion has competent people with potential to rule the country.

He said that balancing the ticket from both divide of religion would help to reduce the tension in the country, give everybody a sense of belonging, promote peaceful and mutual coexistence without stress.

“While we congratulate the winners for the presidential primaries, we urge them to pay attention to this cry from the church. It is important.

“Please do not try a Muslim-Muslim ticket; is an invitation to chaos. It will not fly. It will set the nation against each other,” he said.

He, however, called on millions of Christians in every part of the nation to know that the candidates produced by all political parties belong to all, both Muslim and Christians.

“We don’t have any quarel with that, they are our brothers. We have been working together to build a united nation, but please do not alienate the church.

“If you choose to heed our call, the Nigerian electorate at the polls, the Nigeria populace will trust you with the presidency and we will build one, united and prosperous nation,” the CAN president said.

He, however, prayed for the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians, peace of the country and end to violence, insurgency and kidnapping in the country.

The second bible reading Romance 8:31- 39 was read by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, Femi Gbajabiamila, who was represented by the House of Rep. Deputy Chief Whip, Nkiruka Onyejeocha.

The first and second reeditions were taken by the Non-Denominational Christian Choir Association of Nigeria (NCCN) and ECWA Garki Church, Council Choir, respective.
