Gov Diri approves 100% increase for Bayelsa retirees’ gratuity

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has approved an additional N200 million for the payment of pensioners’ gratuity for the month of May.

The governor gave the approval on Sunday at this year’s Workers’ Day celebration while responding to the demands of labour leaders in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Diri assured retirees that N400 million would be made available in May to accommodate a sizeable number of pensioners in view of the backlog of arrears.

The governor appreciated workers in the state for their support and the existing harmonious industrial relationship with his administration.

He said that his government would prioritise workers’ welfare to enhance productivity.

The governor also approved a number of the workers’ requests, including the implementation of the annual step increment as well as the release of funds for the conduct of the 2022 promotion for both the state and local government workers.

Diri also approved the financial implementation of the 2021 promotion for workers and directed the relevant government officials to negotiate with labour, to come up with feasible recommendations as soon as possible.

On payment of minimum wage to workers in tertiary institutions in the state, Diri explained that an implementation and revision committee had been set up under the leadership of his deputy, and the report was being awaited for full implementation.

“I am not unaware of the long queue for pensioners’ gratuity monthly. As you are aware, we are treating the backlog of payment of gratuity.

“Therefore, for the month of February, we have looked at the figure, and have come up with an addition. Monthly, we release N200 million for pension and gratuities.

“This month, we will add an additional N200 million. In other words, N400 million will be made available for the payment of pensions and gratuities.”

Diri also directed the Commissioner for Education, Gentle Emelah, to come up with recommendations for the monthly running cost of government-owned technical colleges for immediate implementation.

Also, the governor directed the relevant officials in the Ministry of Health to ensure the payment of call-duty allowance to specialist nurses as approved in 2014 in tandem with extant rules.

According to him, the administration will establish technical colleges across the eight local government areas of the state to train people as employers of labour, rather than becoming job seekers.

In a joint address by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), presented by the state NLC chairman, Mr John Ndiomu, labour was full of praises for the Diri administration’s workers-friendly posture.

The NLC and TUC applauded the governor for prompt payment of salaries and gratuities, infrastructure development, and numerous other projects that were ongoing across the state.

Ndiomu commended the state government for releasing N117 million monthly to support the payment of primary school teachers in local governments.

According to him, the complete implementation of the Oracle payment system at the state level and the building of a befitting edifice for the state’s media organisations are some of the achievements that have endeared Diri to workers in the state.

The high point of the celebration was the pronouncement of a cash award by the governor for the march past.

The state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria clinched the first prize of N2 million, while the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives got the second prize of N1.5 million, and the third prize of N1 million went to the state branch of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners. Fish out killers of APC Chieftain Frank-Oputu, Diri urges Police

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has condemned the assassination of Mr Sunday Frank-Oputu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his Yenagoa residence by gunmen.

Diri, who condemned the development in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabra, on Wednesday in Yenagoa, directed the police in the state to fish out killers of the APC chieftain.

He said that Frank-Oputu was assassinated by yet to be identified gunmen on Tuesday night.

Diri, who was quoted as condemning the killing at the 73rd State Executive Council meeting, described the incident as most unfortunate and unacceptable.

“We received the sad news of the assassination of Sunday Frank-Oputu. Let me say that killing does not settle scores. We cannot bequeath a state of killings to our children.

“Let us build our brothers and sisters, and not to assassinate them. On behalf of our government, we send heartfelt condolences to the family.

“We have put the security agencies on their toes to go after the killers. We will do everything within our powers to track down those responsible.

”Our state has been very peaceful and there is no reason for any man to take the life of another,” he said.

The governor called on politicians to play politics devoid of violence.

He gave assurance that those behind the dastardly act would be unmasked and made to face the wrath of the law.

Diri expressed his condolences and that of the government to the immediate family of the deceased.

He also decried the burning of the houses of a serving House of Representatives member and that of his brother in Aghoro Community, Ekeremor Local Government Area, describing it as uncalled for.

“In Aghoro, the homes of a member of the House of Representatives and that of his brother was razed. I hereby disband the  community leadership in that community,” he said.

Diri gave assurance that the perpetrators would be brought to book to serve as deterrent to others.

2023: Gov. Diri cautions politicians against violence

Governor Douye Diri has cautioned politicians against violence and other criminal activities, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Diri gave the admonition on Wednesday at the 72nd session of the Bayelsa State Executive Council at the Exco Chambers in Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor, who spoke through his Deputy, Mr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said there was a compelling need to appeal to all politicians to eschew criminality and brigandage as they go about pursuing their legitimate political ambitions.

He urged the political class in Bayelsa to place the common good of the state above their personal interests.

Diri condemned a recent case of desecration of the law court by some unscrupulous elements over the hearing of an intra-party matter concerning the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

He noted that the frequency at which the judiciary was being threatened, maligned, coerced and desecrated in the country was beyond permissible thresholds in any society.

Diri maintained that the brutish era when people used their might and power to acquire and exercise political power was over.

He, therefore, stressed the need for all political actors to play by the rules.

Diri also advised those who had matters pending in court, to allow the courts to determine the outcome.

He pointed out that the courts in Bayelsa were courts of the first instance, which did not preclude anybody’s right of appeal.

“We are appealing to our politicians to eschew criminality, brigandage, and sponsorship of terrorism. We are also appealing to them to play by the rules and uphold decorum in all their activities.

“Politicians who have matters in court should allow the courts to determine the outcomes,” he said.

Diri thanked the people of Bayelsa for their support and cooperation, so far.

He, however, appealed to members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to shun acrimonious debates, blackmail and lies over party nominations, ahead of the primaries.

He said all stakeholders should be ready to make sacrifices in the overall interest of the party when and where necessary, to move the party and the state forward. (NAN)

    Diri condemns courtroom invasion

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has condemned in the strongest terms the invasion of Justice Nayai Aganaba’s  Court by hoodlums.

Diri made this on Wednesday at the reception and launch of a book titled, ‘Astute Judgments and Essays’ written as part of activities commemorating the retirement ceremony of Justice Aganaba in Yenagoa .

He called on security agencies to partner with the state government to provide adequate security for judicial stakeholders to enable them discharge their constitutional functions without fear of intimidation.

He lauded the Judiciary for its commitment to the administration of Justice and protection of the oppressed and vulnerable in the society.

The governor described Justice Aganaba as an erudite, incorruptible and courageous Jurist who triumphed even in the face of daunting challenges.

“I knew Justice Aganaba as a legal practitioner in the old Rivers state before the creation of Bayelsa state. He is an astute, incorruptible, erudite and courageous Jugde.

“I call on the police and other sister security agencies to partner the government in providing adequate security in our court premises and for all Judges.

“`This will help to avoid the reoccurrence of what happened on April 13,” he said.

Diri, who also applauded the State Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri, for her steadfastness and commitment to duty, lauded her efforts in ensuring that Judicial officers and Judges were given their rightful places in successive administrations.

“I want to again commend the state Chief Judge for her commitment towards ensuring that Judicial officers and indeed all the Judges in the state Judiciary were properly catered for,” he said.

Earlier at a valedictory court session held in honour of the retiring Judge, Justice Abiri, said Justice Aganaba was a respected Jurist who put in 20 meritorious years in service as a Judge,

She said that those who attacked the retiring Justice Aganaba while on duty would face the wrath of the law.

Abiri also commended the state government for granting the state Judiciary financial autonomy

“As an arm of government, the Bayelsa state Judiciary has enjoyed autonomy. And I make bold to say that the state government has not held back any fund to the judicary since the financial autonomy status was granted us,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retiring Justice Aganaba was called to the Bar in 1982 and appointed as a Judge of the Bayelsa Judiciary in 2001 by the first Governor of the state, the late Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that  on April 13, Justice Aganaba was supposed to give a ruling over an intra dispute concerning the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) when suspected hoodlums taking advantage of the commotion created by the larger number of people in the Courtroom invaded the court and disrupted proceedings.

NAN reports that the Bayelsa Police said that it had put two suspects in prison custody following their arrest in connection with the invasion of the state High Court.

Diri, Wike predict victory for PDP in 2023

Governor Douye Diri de Bayelsa and his Rivers counterpart, Governor Nyesom Wike, predicted the victory of the opposition People's Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 presidential election.

The two governors spoke on Monday when Wike visited Diri at Government House in Yenagoa.

According to Mr. Diri, only the PDP can rescue Nigeria from insecurity and economic recession.

He said the party had been repositioned so that he could take over the presidency in 2023.

He further said that the PDP had the pedigree to give Nigerians hope and a sense of direction.

“The presidency is a sacred office and we must do everything possible to protect it and ensure that our party achieves victory in the 2023 elections.

“The first thing for our party is our unity. The second is who becomes president.

"We have a capable national president who can bring us back to power in 2023," said the Governor of Bayelsa.

He commended Mr. Wike for demonstrating strong leadership and governance.

He underscored the need for greater unity among the states of the Niger Delta region to enable them to face their common challenges, in particular environmental pollution and underdevelopment.

“Bayelsa and Rivers are sister states historically and culturally and if anyone is trying to divide us, we must go against them.

“I call on the leaders of Ijaw to come together and amicably resolve any issues we may have.

“Within a family, we will always have problems, but that should not eliminate our brotherhood,” Diri said.

In addition, he praised Mr. Wike for his role in ensuring that the PDP was repositioned, and described him as a man committed to the party.

In a comment, Mr. ike expressed his confidence that the PDP would produce the next Nigerian president.

He stressed the need for unity of purpose between Bayelsa, Rivers and the PDP, saying that success would elude the party if the members did not form a united front.

He praised Mr. Diri for his development efforts and commitment to the party and urged the people of the state to continue to support him.

“Today I came to let everyone know that Douye Diri is one of the governors that I can tell you that he has shown commitment even though he is new.

“He believes in developing his state.

“I have also come to tell you that everyone must work together so that the PPD is united because without a party there can be no presidential candidate.

“Let's all unite. Nigerians are waiting for the PDP and we cannot afford to miss this opportunity. As governors, we must work together.

"Anyone can be a presidential candidate, but if we are not united it cannot be possible," said Wike.

Wike was accompanied on the visit by a high-level delegation that included a former Rivers governor, Chief Celestine Omehia.

Also attending the meeting were two former House Vice Presidents, Austin Opara and Prince Chibudom Nwuche, as well as a former Transport Minister, Chief Abiye Sekibo.

25th anniversary: We are working on development plan for Bayelsa, says Gov. Diri

    By Nathan Nwakamma

Governor Douye Diri de Bayelsa announced that his government was working on a short and long term 10 to 30 year development plan for the state.

Diri revealed this on Saturday at the state's 25th anniversary dinner held at DSP Chief Alamieyeseigha's Banquet Hall in Yenagoa.

The governor said the plan would serve as a model for future administrations to consolidate and bequeath to their successors.

A statement by Diri's chief press secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that the task of carrying out the plan would be collective by all stakeholders.

“For us the task of developing Bayelsa is a must and as your government we will continue to listen to you as advice. We will continue to communicate with you regarding our development plans.

“Bayelsa will have to develop a short and long term development plan. A short-term development plan of at least 10 years and a long-term plan of at least 30 years.

“As a government, we cannot do it alone. We will fall back on you to carry out the plan so that in the end, any governor who comes does not deviate from the development plan of our dear state. he said.

Diri advised Bayelsa residents of different political persuasions to play the game fairly and with a mindset of putting the Ijaw state and nation above personal interests.

He stressed that if politicians played by the rules, the state would shift from one development-oriented government to another, because at the end of the day, the power rests with the people.

“In Bayelsa, we have a family; a family from the Ijaw nation, a family we have no reason to part with. Let's play politics by the rules.

“Let's build strong institutions rather than strong men. Let our institutions outlive us so that at the end of the day we bequeath a developing and peaceful state to the generations to be born. Said Diri.

The governor noted that not only is the state richly endowed with human and natural resources, but it is also endowed with talented athletes, women and artists.

Diri cited some of the notable people including Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborududu, winner of the musical talent show, 2021 Nigerian Idol, Kingdom Kroseide, and nine-year-old Deborah Quickpen, who just won the Under-10 championship. years. African Chess Championship in Ghana.

The Nigerian News Agency reports that the highlight of the Silver Jubilee anniversary celebration was a historical and cultural exhibit hosted by Chief State Historian and Archivist Dr Stephen Olali.

There was also the birthday cake cutting by the Governor, with Dr Gloria Diri, Ms Patience Ama Diri, Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Chief Justice, Judge Kate Abiri, and Speaker of the House Assembly, Abraham Ingobere.

There were also performances by Nigerian Idol star Kroseide and the Bayelsa Cultural Troupe, serial winners of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST).

Bayelsa at 25: We’ve made good progress  says Gov. Diri

    By Shedrack Frank

Governor Douye Diri de Bayelsa on Friday assessed the evolution of the south-south state since its creation 25 years ago and said he had "witnessed remarkable progress".

So he urged the Bayelsa people to appreciate God for the creation of the state and challenged them to contribute significantly to its growth.

Diri, in a statewide broadcast to mark Nigeria's 61st birthday and Bayelsa's 25th birthday, specifically recalled that Bayelsa was established in 1996 by then-military leader General Sani Abacha, today 'late today.

Noting that the state had not developed to the optimal level, he however said that it had experienced appreciable growth in terms of human and infrastructural development compared to when it was part of the former state of Rivers.

While calling on all of Bayelsa's sons and daughters to close ranks and support his administration to move the state forward, Diri stressed that there is no other state they can call their own.

“We must all avoid acts that could roll back the state.

“We have achieved a lot, especially in education, with many higher institutions producing quality graduates.

“We have built and duplicated several roads connecting seven local government areas in addition to being connected to the national grid.

"We also have a functional airport where commercial flight operations began on August 19, 2021."

He praised Abacha and the founding fathers of the state for making the dream of having a cohesive Ijaw state come true.

Son added, “Although we are not yet where we want to be, we are not where we were.

“I urge you all to continue to pray for your leaders, for the peace of the earth and the success of this administration so that together we can build the Bayelsa of our dreams.

“We are monolithic and must not sabotage ourselves. We have nowhere else to call our homes.

“We salute the courage of the late General Sani Abacha, who proclaimed the creation of the only homogeneous Ijaw State on this same day of the year of our Lord 1996.

"I also express special gratitude to our heroes and founding fathers, whose remarkable acts of courage and heroism will forever remain engraved in our hearts and our history," he said.

Describing the development of the state as constant, the governor thanked his predecessors for their efforts on which his administration relied.

“It's a demonstration of the saying that teamwork makes the dream work,” he said.

Diri expressed his administration's determination to transform the state to achieve its “Glory of All Lands” status.
