Borno Government has donated equipment worth N81 million to the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).
The out fund is for the Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering.
Presenting the items, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Babagana Malumbe, said the gesture was in response to a request from the university to meet some requirements for accreditation.
Malumbe said that the Gov. Babagana Zulum administration was committed to education and very much aware of the important role the university was playing in advancing education in the state.
He said that as alumnus of the school and a product of the department, Gov. Zulum after receiving the request, directed the ministry to act.
“We cannot afford to be in government and a department in our own faculty will loose accreditation.
“He (Zulum) directed the ministry to ensure that we procure the equipment,” Malumbe said.
Recieving the equipment, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, lauded the intervention which he said would go a long way in enhancing teaching and research in the entire faculty.
Shugaba, who narrated how Zulum was disturbed over non accreditation of the department, promised to intervene which he now did.
Some of the 20 items donated included Triaxial Testing Machine with complete accessories, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Marshall Testing Machine and Direct Shear box Machine with complete accessories.
