Nigeria an attractive investment destination of West Africa, says Bagudu

Nigeria remains an attractive investment destination of West Africa and other parts of the world, Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi has said.

    .

Bagudu made this known when the Chairman of WACOT Rice Company, Alhaji Faruk Gumel visited the governor at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

The governor expressed optimism that Nigerian Rice Farmers could double their production with the application of scientific methods which he described as necessary in the modern time.

He thanked WACOT for supporting farmers with improved rice seeds, and expressed happiness that the company has demonstrated that Nigeria is an investment destination.

Bagudu pointed out that the second rice mill established by WACOT in Argungu was a testimony to this objective which has also facilitated self sufficiency in rice production attained by the country.

“WACOT has really demonstrated that this is real and we can feed our immediate neighbours and other parts of the world especially with rice.

“The farmers are now doubling their capacity and work is in progress.

They have promised to commission the project before May 29, 2023 and from what I saw, it will be real.

“Nigeria is a big market for rice and that efforts of WACOT in the state had boosted financial inclusion,” he said.

He recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari assumed leadership of Nigeria in 2015 when the world economy was in crisis and we don’t have money to import food that we were used to importing.

“Buhari decided that Nigerians will eat what they grow and grow what they eat and he launched Anchor Borrowers Programme in 2015.“Alhaji Gumel was instrumental to that happy development and WACOT immediately took-off in Kebbi state,” he said.

He recalled the robust partnership between Kebbi State and Lagos State that gave birth to Lake Rice, saying, “it really worked well.

”Responding, Gumel briefed the governor on the purpose of their visit which according to him is on ensuring enhanced agricultural production with possible support from financial institutions.

Gumel who is also the Chairman Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority said the firm was expanding its rice mill and doubling its capacity.

He said that the visit was part of activities to mark WACOT’s partnership with USAID, tagged: “Rice Enhancement and Financial Inclusion Programme.

”The chairman said WACOT will inaugurate the financial inclusion programme towards capturing the non-banking farmers in the state, and also to highlight the progress made and assess the impact of the activities of the company.

    .

“In the last two years, it has really been difficult to get people to be banked and we are here to change the narrative,” Gumel said.

An official from Lagos State and Director, Rice Value Chain, Mr Balogun Wakilu Olabode commended Bagudu for laying the foundation of agricultural revival in Nigeria especially rice production, saying that the brain-child of the governor, “Lakerice”, is the most popular choice among Lagosians.

Malaria: Kebbi, USAID to distribute 2.8m treated nets – Official

The Kebbi State Government says it has concluded arrangements to distribute 2.8 million Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) to households in the state.

The nets would be distributed in collaboration with the United States President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI-US).

The Permanent Secretary, Kebbi State Ministry of Health, Alhaji Hassan Ibrahim stated this at a media engagement forum in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

He said the state government in partnership with the PMI-US had procured 2.8 million treated nets for distribution to deserving households.

“The government is resolute at expanding investment opportunities in other malaria interventions and innovative programmes such as indoor residual spray, vector control and surveillance measures.

“While strengthening drug-based malaria preventive and treatment mechanisms,” he said.

Ibrahim said the state government would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to review mechanisms towards reducing the disease burden.

He said the last National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) indicated that malaria prevalence dropped from 64 per cent in 2015 to 52.2 per cent in 2018 in the state.

The Permanent Secretary disclosed that another survey was in the offing towards 2023, and attributed the feat achieved in the fight against the disease to the visionary leadership of Gov. Atiku Bagudu, and support of the stakeholders.

“Kebbi government launched ‘Operation Stop Malaria’ amongst other laudable interventions to reverse the trend of malaria and reduce the negative impact of the disease in the state,” he said.

Earlier, Alhaji Yusuf Sani-Kamba, Chairman, Directors’ Forum Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHCDA), said that over 12,000 personnel would be deployed for the distribution exercise in 225 wards across 21 local government areas of the state.

According to him, household mobilisation and registration will hold from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9, while distribution exercise would run between Oct. 21 and Oct. 29. He, therefore, advised the people to spread the nets under shade before use.

Also, Mr Sami Olaniru, State Coordinator, Breakthrough Action Nigeria, said that USAID was playing prominent role towards ensuring total eradication of the disease.

He said the media engagement was designed to expose practitioners to the objectives of the campaign and encourage use of  ITNs at the grassroots.

“We want to re-orientate journalists on malaria prevention and control with special emphasis on ITNs, and also motivate them to develop interest in reporting the campaign,” he said.

He lauded the state government and other partners for their contributions towards combating malaria.

NIS hands over Libya bound 13-yr-old-girl to NAPTIP

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), on Monday handed over a 13-year-old girl from Ogun it arrested in Kebbi on her way to Libya.

The Comptroller of the NIS in the state, Mrs Rabi Bashir-Nuhu, made this known while briefing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

“The girl was intercepted at Koko border on Friday, Aug. 9 as she was travelling from Ogun to Sokoto unaccompanied and alone.

“Upon further interrogation by the Anti-human Trafficking Unit, the girl claimed she was going to Libya to serve as house maid.

In her response, the victim told newsmen that she hails from Ekiti State but lives with her grandmother in Ogun.“Someone contacted my grandmother and asked me to come to Sokoto state and she gave me a contact that I should call If I come to Sokoto for onward movement to Libya.

“My mum and dad are separated but the mum is living in Ogun state, as for my father, I don’t know where he is now.

Kebbi plans to return 750,000 out-of-school children to classroom – KBSUBEB

Prof. Suleiman Khalid, Chairman, Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board (KBSUBEB), said that the board had stepped-up efforts to return 750,000 out-of-school children to classroom across the state.

Khalid announced the plan of the board when a delegation on Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) Implementation Support Team from Abuja paid a courtesy visit on Gov. Atiku Bagudu in Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

The chairman said 86,000 out-of-school children were returned to school in 2021 across the state, adding that in 2022, it was planned that 750,000 of such children would be returned to school.

“These, among others, are some of the incredible achievements we have recorded sequel to the sustained support of Gov. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu,”  he said.

Receiving the delegation, Gov. Bagudu restated his commitment to adequately fund education at all levels in the state, while appreciating the successes recorded in returning out-of-school children to classes in the state under the project.

While assuring of the readiness of his administration to logically and judiciously deploy resources to achieve better results, Bagudu observed that the myriad of interventions by the federal and Kebbi state governments had positively opened the fortunes of education in the state.

“These interventions had really helped to arrest the hitherto high level of decay in the educational institutions in the state.

Let me acknowledge that BESDA had also enabled the state to do what it should have done earlier, this is a wake up call.

“I am delighted that SUBEB in the state has been doing very well, I want to assure that more will be done.

“Kebbi is successfully implementing many intervention projects with the Federal Government, World Bank and other agencies.

“Education planning depends on statistics, I want to direct those in charge to be mindful of the sanctity of data,” Bagudu directed.

The Team Leader, Dr Bala Zakari who is also the Deputy Executive Secretary, Technical, UBEC Abuja, said BESDA was a result-oriented project under the Federal Ministry of Education expected to end next month.

He explained that it was a four-year programme that had received tremendous support from Kebbi State Government.

Zakari also lauded the state for the support and cooperation it gave during the just concluded  National Personnel Audit, adding that BESDA was targeting out-of-school children,  to get them back to school.

The National Implementation Adviser, BESDA, Dr Dabo Adamu, stated that Kebbi remained one of the best BESDA states in the country, assuring that it was why the state government earned $5 miliion after the first NBS verification.
