"I never did anything for cinema, I just did what I wanted to do and what turned me on," he says. The 74-year-old adventurer and documentary filmmaker, who created the World Safari films and Adventure Bound TV series of the 1970s and 80s, was a sex symbol in his own right: all tight shorts and sun-kissed sinew. At the height of his fame, he even posed nude beside a smouldering fireplace for a Cleo magazine centrefold. These days, he spends most of his time living under an assumed name in a secret island location, but he still has one more adventure in the works. "In hindsight, [the World Safari films] should never have done as well as it did," he says.
Mangels inherited none of the key ingredients that might traditionally be associated with success in the public arena. He was a primary school dropout who forged his mother's signature and lied about his age in order to leave school after year 7. He had an absent father, and grew up dirt poor with his mum until she died when he was 15. Prior to setting off on the journey that would leave his mark on the world, he had notched up a bizarre curriculum vitae that included stints as a chook farmer, jockey, shearer, baker and builder — but certainly nothing that might presage his climb to the pinnacle of Aussie film and television. "I was always a bit of a dreamer and I thought, if I do a trip around the world I might be able to sell it … so I'll give it a try," Mangels says. "Lots of people said I was crazy to go on with it, it'll never do any good."
In the 1970s and 80s, Alby Mangels was up there with Australia's biggest celebrities. But today, he loathes the thought of even being recognised in the street. That animosity towards fame ran so deep that Mangels left Australia to live under an assumed name on an undisclosed island. "I've been away for 10 or 12 years now and I'm where nobody knows me at all and I like it," he says. "I've even changed my name, sort of. Not legally or anything, if they want to know my name, I'll call myself Jim or anybody else. "Because today they can just look you up on the internet … next minute there's pages and pages of it. "It's been years since I've called [myself] my name."
Mangels was 21 when he and his mate John Fields set off with a single film camera and a $400 budget for what became a six-year pilgrimage to 56 countries across four continents. They called it a day in Holland, with Fields admitting himself to hospital for hepatitis treatment and Mangels heading to London with about a kilometre of film to sell to the BBC. The broadcaster had initially shown interest in the film, but that all changed after seeing the quality of the footage. "They said, look it's not suitable, we can't do anything with it," Mangels recalls. It was a devastating blow. Fields gave up on the dream after repeated knockbacks but Mangels refused to accept defeat. He decided to market the movie himself, eventually landing a royalty deal with a TV station and setting off to show World Safari in any town hall within the station's broadcast footprint.
This stubborn young man would often have to sell tickets, then convince a customer to look after the booth so he could run up on stage and regale the audience with tales of his exploits. "Then I ran up the back and started the projector, and then I went back down again and sold more tickets," he says. "There's not a country town that I haven't been to. "As long as there was a couple of hundred people there, and then I'd get 90 per cent of the people going to see the film."
He was on top of the world, but it couldn't last. Mangels' star had faded by the time World Safari III came out in 1988, and he fell into bankruptcy. Suddenly his homes, farms, plane, helicopter and worldly possessions all evaporated — and it wasn't the only time. "There were a couple of times where I went broke," he says. "It was just not knowing … maybe not having the right people with me. "It was a bit hard to keep it all on track. "You ride the highs and lows, but I don't want to have too many more lows now though."
These days, Mangels lives a simpler existence. He is a health fanatic who still cuts a striking figure in a singlet, but has no desire to live to 100. "It blows me away what I've done, and the successes and the hardships that I've had," he says. "But that, sort of, has made me pretty content with life. "I just sort of take it day by day, and cruising along, I suppose you could say." And yet, there is still potential for Mangels to come out of retirement for one last odyssey.

Deyna Castellanos cancelled out Rachel Corsie’s opener at the Bescot Stadium to leave the tie level at full-time but Rachel Daly won it for the hosts in extra-time.
City showed plenty of character in the opening period at the Bescot Stadium, especially after going behind in the quarter-final tie. Villa took the lead on 20 minutes, Scottish international captain Rachel Corsie producing a bullet header to open the scoring for the hosts.
Despite that setback, City came back strongly to dominate the rest of the first 45 minutes. There was an almost immediate response from the visitors on 23 minutes as Chloe Kelly produced a neat through ball into the box for Filippa Angeldahl but the Swedish ace fired over the bar.
The equaliser did eventually come – and it was Deyna Castellanos who got it on 38 minutes, looping a brilliant header past Hampton from a pinpoint Lauren Hemp cross from the left. We could even have gone in ahead at the break but Shaw couldn’t direct a header from close-range home in first half injury time.
City started the second half in positive mood and it was Shaw again who almost put us in front. Hemp floated a ball into the far post on 51 minutes which Hampton misjudged and then Shaw's shot on the rebound was blocked on the line.
The ball was recycled to Kerstin Casparij, who looped a cross in, which came crashing back off the bar! The best chance of the second half came on 79 minutes as Kelly broke clear after good work with Shaw but her final shot flew agonisingly wide of Hampton's goal.
On 85 minutes, Angeldahl drove forward and played a one-two with Hemp who in turn knocked it back into the Swede's path, but her near post effort was parried away by the now very busy Hampton. The hosts did have chances to win it in stoppage time, though, at the end of the second half. Jordan Nobbs saw a 20-yard shot from just fly over Roebuck's bar. Then moments later, Danielle Turner saw a free header from inside the box go wide and she had her head in her hands as the whistle blew immediately afterwards.
The Villans did take the lead when play resumed for extra-time, Daly prodding home on 96 minutes after Roebuck could only parry a headed chance into her path. City did continue to search for that all-important second to send the tie to penalties but, despite the effort, we struggled to create clear-cut opportunities with the clock ticking down.
There was hope for the visitors and anxiety for the hosts as the assistant referee signalled six minutes of added time in the closing moments. Hayley Raso fired agonisingly wide in that extra spell at the end of the game. But the Villans ultimately held on to make it through to the last four of the competition.
Ellie Roebuck started between the sticks, shielded by a back four of Kerstin Casparij, Esme Morgan, Alex Greenwood and Laia Aleixandri. Yui Hasegawa started at the base of the midfield, with Filippa Angeldahl and Deyna Castellanos given licence to get forward and support the attack. At the sharp end, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp started on the wings with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw at centre-forward.
City are out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage. Focus now turns to the WSL as Gareth Taylor’s team continue our title challenge. We’ve got a huge WSL clash coming up as we face Chelsea at the Academy Stadium in our next game. The game takes place on Sunday 26 March, with a 12:40 (UK) kick-off and it’s being screened live on BBC One. City are third in the table with 35 points from 15 games while the Blues are currently at the summit with 37 points from 14 matches.

When was the last time a Premier League club was driven to the title by a 21-year-old? Wayne Rooney won the first of his five when he was that tender age at Manchester United. But at that point in his stellar career, with Cristiano Ronaldo alongside him, he was not quite as fundamental to the team as Bukayo Saka is to Arsenal even if Rooney did make the most appearances for United in that campaign.
There is now just 10 matches to go, and no other distractions, for Arsenal in their quest for a first title since 2004 – when Saka was still not even three years old – and so the finishing line gets tantalisingly closer and closer with City still in the Champions League and FA Cup. There will be those who, understandably, point to the classy influence of captain Martin Odegaard or the transformative effect of Oleksandr Zinchenko in driving Arsenal towards this most unlikely of triumphs but, make no mistake, it is Saka who is their main man; who is their undisputed ‘Starboy’.
Indeed Bukayo means “adds to happiness” in Yoruba, one of the main languages spoken in Nigeria, and there could not be a more apt name for this smiling assassin who now has 12 league goals and 10 assists and is the first player to reach double figures in both those charts this season.
If there was a vote for footballer of the year held today then he would surely win it, which is all the more remarkable given Erling Haaland’s 41 goals – so far – this season for City. It will probably come down to which club claims the title and with six wins in a row since losing to City – with 19 goals scored and five conceded – Arsenal are showing the resilience to go all the way.
They have to go to the Etihad, they have to go to Liverpool, they have to go to Newcastle United but they are showing the kind of belief, all the more noteworthy given they are such a young team, that suggests they might just do it - even though they have that sky blue juggernaut with Haaland at the wheel in their rear view mirror. There is no let-up.
Saka is at the vanguard which is all the more impressive given he plays at the sharp end, is often the recipient of some hefty challenges and fouls, and appears in every game. He is targeted but few can actually nail him. Sleep, Saka said, is something that can wait until the summer although he has the Arsenal fans dreaming.
The convincing win also helped Arsenal get over the disappointment of exiting the Europa League, after a penalty shoot-out, to Sporting last Thursday. This was the perfect response and there was no sign of fatigue or a hangover although there will be a pang of concern from manager Mikel Arteta, with Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba already out injured, now that players head around the world to feature for their national teams.
The match against Crystal Palace saw Arsenal secure their 22nd Premier League win of the season, as many as they managed in the whole of last term. Saka’s two goals and one assist took him to 12 goals and 10 assists in the league this season; the second player overall to do so and the first to do so this season. His impressive performance makes him a strong contender for footballer of the year if Arsenal go on to win the title.

Manchester City became the first team to book their place in the semi-final of the FA Cup following a thumping 6-0 win over Vincent Kompany's Burnley on Saturday. Erling Haaland struck his sixth hat-trick of the season to put City on their way, with a Julian Alvarez brace and Cole Palmer's strike sealing a mammoth victory for Pep Guardiola's side.
Sheffield United also secured their passage into the last four after beating Blackburn 3-2 in an all-Championship tie at Bramall Lane.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will be looking to progress into the semi-final when they take on Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon (4:30). Erik ten Hag's side will be without Casemiro for the game, however, as they aim to reach the semi-final of the competition for the first time since 2020.
The Red Devils and the Cottagers will know their potential last-four opponents before the game - with the draw set to take place after Brighton's clash with Grimsby live on the BBC.
And the draw is getting underway. Brighton become the third team to book their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup after a 5-0 win over Grimsby Town. Denis Undav, Kaoru Mitoma and Solly March were all on the scoresheet with Evan Ferguson notching himself a brace.
The first semi-final has been drawn as Brighton take on the winners of this afternoon's game. So it's a potential Manchester derby in prospect for Wembley in May. And that means Manchester City will take on Championship side Sheffield United at Wembley.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has made four changes to his side. Marcel Sabitzer, Jadon Sancho, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay all come in. Fulham in the meantime have made three alterations of their own.
Vincent Kompany saw the Poznan in all its glory many times during his time at Manchester City - but this will have cut him to the bone. The spectacular sight of those fans who still worship him, backs turned to the pitch, bouncing up and down with pure joy, was not the kind of return the Belgian envisaged when the FA Cup 's quarter-final draw gave him the chance to go up against Pep Guardiola. This was meant to be his night, a stage to show that talk of one day succeeding Guardiola is based on much more than Sky Blue sentiment. The only opportunity Kompany got was the chance to salute City's supporters and 9,000 travelling Clarets before the carnage ensued.
Both FA Cup semi-finals are set to be held at Wembley Stadium across the weekend of Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. Kick-off times will be confirmed in due course. The ball numbers for the FA Cup semi-final will be as follows.
That brings the draw for the FA Cup semi-finals to an end. Thank you very much for joining us.

Brad Weber, a halfback for the All Blacks and Chiefs, admits that Northern Hemisphere's innovations now influence the way New Zealand Super Rugby teams play. Specifically, he points out the resurgence of the quick tap, which has now become a significant element in the sport.
The rugby world continues to talk about the red card given to Freddie Steward during Ireland and England’s Six Nations game in Dublin. Steward, a 6’5, 110kg England fullback, was sent off just before halftime after his elbow made contact with Ireland fullback Hugo Keenan’s head. Keenan left the field for a head injury assessment and failed to return.
Former England scrumhalf Matt Dawson called the decision an "utter farce" and said it was impossible to avoid such incidents in a contact sport like rugby. Meanwhile, many others also shared their thoughts online, questioning what Steward could have done differently and expressing concern that the game could become non-contact if harsh decisions like this continue.
Steward is now set to face a Guinness Six Nations disciplinary panel, which will decide whether the red card is to be reduced to a yellow card. The incident is just another example of the challenges surrounding rugby's attempts to decrease the amount and severity of head injuries on the field. Join the conversation and give your take on the matter.

TV personality Georgia Harrison has told how her ex-partner Stephen Bear took away her “innocent spark” and left her fearing he could sell more footage after he posted revenge porn online. The former Love Island star recalled how “multiple men” approached her saying they had seen the private sex video before she discovered it had gone viral on the internet.
Bear was jailed for 21 months earlier this month for sharing the video on his OnlyFans website without Harrison’s consent. Harrison said going to court was “empowering” and Bear’s conviction helped “validate” her experience – and she is now calling for a change in the law to make it easier for victims to get justice.
Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, Harrison said at least five women contact her every day to share their own revenge porn ordeal, warning it is “such a common thing”. She has waived her own legal right to anonymity in an effort to highlight the problem.
The clip Bear leaked was six minutes long, but he had taped 20 minutes of footage, leaving Harrison “living in fear that he was going to sell more”, she said. Harrison added: “I just think in a way it took away an innocent sort of spark that I always had.”
“(Going to court) was tough, and it was really scary… But when I actually got in the courtroom, it was almost empowering," Harrison said. “I took that power back."
The Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 made it an offence to disclose private sexual photographs and films with the intent to cause distress and without consent. Harrison is calling for the requirement to prove intent to be removed from the law, on the basis that any case of revenge porn is likely to cause distress to the victim.
Her documentary, being aired on ITV on Monday, Revenge Porn: Georgia Vs Bear will explore her personal story. Bear, 33, denied all charges against him but was found guilty of voyeurism and of two counts of disclosing private sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress.
Harrison said she is “enjoying making a difference” by speaking about her experience – and even refused to rule out a foray into politics. “It’s definitely not something I anticipated happening in my career, but I’ve really been enjoying making a difference,” Harrison said.
Harrison said that since her case, she has been contacted by many victims of revenge porn. “Ever since this happened to me I became someone that victims reach out to, and I get at least five women a day – usually victims but sometimes mothers of victims or family members who want advice,” she said.

The BBC announced that Gary Lineker will not be covering the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday due to loss of voice. The position will be filled by Alex Scott. Lineker, during live coverage of Manchester City's victory over Burnley on Saturday, was already suffering from a weak voice.
Lineker was scheduled to appear during the grudge match between Brighton & Hove Albion and fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Sunday, but due to the harshness of his condition, he was unable to attend. In a tweet, he said: "I've been silenced... literally, by a nasty cold so, annoyingly, won't be working at Brighton this afternoon."
Last week, after criticising government immigration policy, Gary Lineker was suspended by BBC. The suspension created controversy over the broadcaster's impartiality rules. However, BBC reversed their decision after his colleagues refused to work in solidarity by forcing Match of the Day to air soccer highlights without normal commentary.
After Gary Lineker's suspension row, his return to BBC's soccer show coverage was widely anticipated. Unfortunately, due to a harsh cold, he will be unable to appear during the FA Cup quarter-final. Alex Scott will take his place. Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has issued new guidance for employees, stating that the Chinese social media app TikTok should be removed from their work phones unless it is being used for editorial or marketing purposes. This comes after the UK government banned the use of TikTok on civil servants' and ministers' phones.
This guidance marks a shift in the corporation's tone regarding TikTok, as the broadcaster had vigorously embraced the app over the past year, even hiring specialists for its social media team.
The BBC's guidance warns against the installation of TikTok on a BBC corporate device unless there is a valid business reason to do so. This instruction follows "concerns raised by government authorities worldwide regarding data privacy and security."
The BBC is currently reviewing the situation and will provide additional updates based on the guidelines provided by the government and the National Cyber Security Centre.
Senior BBC journalists have been warning about the company's "obsession" with TikTok for months, with some alarmed that the app admitted to tracking reporters working for prominent publications, including Forbes, BuzzFeed, and the Financial Times. One insider stated that it was "not exactly the time to be uncritically throwing resources at a platform."
The decision by the BBC follows Danish public broadcaster DR's recent advice to its employees to stop using TikTok. Meanwhile, a TikTok insider has described the bans as "self-defeating," pointing to the company's plan to create a "secure enclave for European TikTok user data" to allay security concerns.
In response to the situation, a TikTok source has stated that they are happy to discuss any security issues with BBC journalists and address any concerns they might have. The company remains in close dialogue with the BBC and is committed to working with them to tackle their concerns.
With cybersecurity and data privacy becoming increasingly important concerns for companies across the globe, BBC's review of TikTok highlights the growing pressure for businesses to remain cautious and vigilant when it comes to third-party social media apps.
