PDP receives thousandsThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received thousands of defectors from different political parties in Adamawa.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and PDP presidential candidate, received the defectors at a ceremony in Yola on Monday.

Abubakar assured them of equity and justice in their new party.

“We expect you to work assidiously toward our victory in the 2023 general elections,” he said.

He said that since the ban on electioneering campaign was still in force, the PDP as a law abiding party would wait for the appropriate time for the commencement of its campaign.

Abubakar said that he joined the presidential race because of his desire to serve the people of Nigerians.

“My visit today is just a home coming because I have not been home since when I won the primary election of my party, ” he said.

The former Vice-President commended Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri for his achievements in security, infrastructure, education, health and internal democracy in the PDP family in the state.

He urged the people to continue to support him to deliver more dividends of democracy to them through provision of social services across the state.

Fintiri said that his administration has delivered dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

“We have fullfilled about 80 per cent of our campaign promises,” he said.

He said his administration has spent billions of naira for construction of two playovers and overhead bridges at the state capital in Yola among other things.

Gov. Okowa urges Christians to pray for unity, nation’s recovery

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and Vice-Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Christians to pray for unity and recovery of the country.

Okowa made the call when he received leaders of South-South Zone of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) led by Archbishop Israel Ege in Asaba on FridayHe advised Christians not to allow political intrigues to pollute the Church and divide it.

He said that the time had come for Christians to go on their kneels and seek divine direction in the choice of the nation’s leaders that would emerge in 2023 rather than succumb to distraction by politicians.

”It is my prayer that the Church will continue to lead us in prayers and we need to be a little cautious as a Church.

“I am saying this because from the conversations I am beginning to hear, I want to be sure that the Church will not because of politics divide itself.

“The Church in itself must be very prayerful that the will of God be done in 2023. We may have our individual preferences but we must be cautious about the unity of the Church.

“Although, we are traumatised as Christians but we must be careful not to, because of that trauma, take decisions that may not actually be the will of God,” he said.

The governor attributed the successes of his administration to grace of God and pledged to continue to synergise with the Church in piloting the affairs of the state and in his future endeavours.

He called for constitutional review to pave the way for devolution of powers, especially giving more authority to states to establish their own police outfit as a way to tackle insecurity, noting that the nation was in perilous times.

The governor stressed that it was time for the re-building of the nation by giving all segment of the society a sense of belonging in the scheme of things.

He frowned at the continuous stay of tertiary institutions’ students at home due to strike by teachers and other workers.

He said that drastic steps should be taken to pull the nation out of economic quagmire, worsening insecurity and other heinous crimes taking place in all geopolitical zones.

“There is no doubt that we are very challenged as a nation and it appears that all hope is lost, particularly to the younger ones.

But I am one person that believes that all hope is not lost.

“Whatever thing that we have seen in the last seven years, I believe that God has allowed it for a purpose.

I believe that there are lessons to be learnt.

“As at today, there is so much insecurity;  Most Nigerians don’t even know how huge these challenges are.

“With the things going on now in the education sector, it’s not what anyone will wish for.

We need to be very prayerful.

“The Church must stay very prayerful and it’s a time for us as a nation to unite and find peace,” he said.

Okowa further said there was need to expand constitution of the security agencies.

“My principal, the Presidential Candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has always said that it’s not possible to police this nation with the Federal Government police only.

“It is not because of the situation of today but because of the peculiarities of this nation.

We need to devolve power and resources to the states to ensure that they can run their own police force,” he said.

Earlier, the Archbishop said that they were in Asaba to thank the governor for his support for Christians in the state and the South South and assured him of their support at all times.

Ege congratulated Okowa on his emergence as PDP’s vice presidential candidate and for his transformation agenda in Delta.

He urged the governor to remain a good ambassador of the church in his political career.

The cleric said that Satan was at war with the Church, using Boko Haram to kidnap and kill Christians as well as persecute believers.

He called on Christians to redouble prayers for the nation.

Highpoint of the event was the special prayer for Okowa, his family, state and the nation.

NNPP worries over prolonged ASUU strike, says chairman

New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has expressed concern over the the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since six months ago.

The NNPP Chairman in Katsina State, Alhaji Sani Liti, expressed the concern on Friday in Katsina while addressing newsmen on the party’s agenda.

According to Liti, the situation is worrisome, and becomes necessary for them to show their concerns because it has forced over 10 million students to remain redundant at home.

He therefore suggested that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should sacrifice the funds they realised from the sales of nomination forms to settle the ASUU’s claims.

“If the more than 10 million young Nigerians are allowed to continue to remain at home, we ask Nigerians to start an ‘ASUU back to Class’ contributory fund.

“We believe that Nigerians shall contribute money to ASUU and have them return to classes.

Should 60 million Nigerians contribute N1,000 only, the total money should be about N60 billion.

“Political parties, especially PDP and APC, should sacrifice all their income from the sale of forms, estimated to be over N30 billion to ASUU.

“In addition, the major candidates, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Bola Tinubu should also sacrifice half of the amount they expended during the convention of their political parties,” he suggested.

Meanwhile, Liti said that the political processes and the money used by the political parties and politicians from February to August, was estimated to consume twice the amount for ASUU’s demand to reopen schools.

He advised government that for the country’s economy to improve, and, within the remaining time the government has, it must be able to control politicians’ excessive use and abuse of the Naira.

On security issues, the NNPP Chairman said it had become necessary for the people to embark on a special prayer session as one of the best alternatives to resolve the problem.

“It is, thus, important for the people of Katsina to devise local means of protecting themselves, including local intelligence gathering, ways of avoiding bandits’ attack on their vIllages and several other means they may devise.

“They should deploy the greatest weapon that is available to them, which prayer is one.

“We therefore, urge every grown-up person, who has the ability, to fast at least once a week and ask God to help us overcome the rising insecurity in Katsina State and Nigeria.

“In this respect, we shall call for a state prayer every month.

The monthly Katsina state prayer session wIll begin this month, God willing.

2023: Atiku not prepared for job of a president, says Tinubu campaign DG

The Tinubu Campaign Organisation (TCO) has said that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 presidential candidate is not prepared for the job.

Mr Bayo Onanuga, TCO Director, Media and Communications, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja while reacting to comments made by Atiku in a television interview.

“We have watched Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s interview on a national television and were extremely shocked by the many lies and ignorance displayed by the PDP presidential candidate.

“In the interview, Atiku exposed himself as a man who is not prepared for the job he is applying for and a man who cannot be entrusted with our commonwealth.

“He was flippant in his response to important questions about his record of service and how he made money while serving in Customs.

“He muddled up facts and exhibited befudling absence of mind during the interview,” Onanuga said.

He said It was most shocking that Atiku in the interview, admitted that he cheated the system for decades and engaged in gross misconduct as a government worker.

Onanuga said as a customs officer at the Idi-Iroko border, Atiku revealed that he ran a commercial taxi service, claiming there was no law stopping public officers from doing business in Nigeria.

“He punched harder, claiming there is no conflict of interest in doing so, but we found this to be untrue.

“Every officer in the civil service is expected to comply with a code of conduct and service rules.

“The rules bar civil and public servants from engaging in private business while in government employment to the detriment of the service he is employed to render to the public.

“The 1999 Constitution further codifies this in part one, fifth schedule section of 2 (b),” Onanuga said.

He explained that the section said a public officer shall not, except where he is not employed on full-time basis, engage or participate in the management or running of any private business, profession or trade.

The TSO DG noted that the rule, however, allowed a public officer to engage in farming activities.

He therefore wondered which rule or law Atiku was relying upon for his gross misconduct as a public officer.

“It is our considered view that Atiku gamed the system all through his career in public service, culminating in his founding of the Intel Logistics along with Late Shehu Yar’Adua and some Italians.

This, he said, was even while he was still in the employment of the Nigeria Customs Service.

He added that Atiku while trying to impress his audience with his supposed knowledge of international affairs, ended up embarrassing himself with false data he cited from Egypt.

Onanuga said the TCO found Atiku’s claim that Egypt had two million police officers on the streets to be untrue.

This, he said, was especially as various sources put the number at about 500,000 for a population of 104 million and not 80 million as Atiku claimed.

He said the PDP presidential candidate also displayed poor knowledge of key sectors of the country’s economy.

Onanuga added that it was surprising that Atiku does not know the contribution of oil and gas industry to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“He claimed the sector represents 20 per cent of our national GDP whereas it is below 10 per cent.

“And it is still falling, owing to the growth of non-oil sector under the current President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress(APC) administration.

“Our conclusion is that Atiku is ill-prepared to be president of Nigeria, if he could bungle a television interview that was planned well ahead of the day and time.

“We expected the PDP presidential candidate to be well informed on any issue before coming on national television to expose himself to avoidable ridicule,” Onanuga said.

He added that it was unfortunate that while criticising APC’s 2023 Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, Atiku didn’t see seeking to be president on PDP’s ticket after eight years of a president from his part of the country as politics of exclusion.

According to him, Atiku during the interview, provided several contradictory answers, adding that in one breath, he said power rotation is not in the Constitution.

“In another breath, he said the PDP has never micro zoned any position, then he admitted that the party has always rotated power between the North and South.

Atiku’s justification as to why he became PDP’s presidential candidate, instead of a southerner is a perfect example in ellipsis,” Onanuga said

2023: My choice of running mate based on competence, ability, vision – Tinubu

    Sen.

Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate,  says  selection of his running mate has nothing to do with religious faith.

    He said selection of Sen.

Kashim Shettima, a Muslim,  as his running mate had  to do with competence, experience, ability and vision.

Tinubu made  this known in a statement by his spokesperson, Mr Tunde Rahman on Saturday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the APC presidential candidate was reacting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s comment in a television  interview on Friday.

Abubakar had said that  a Muslim-Muslim Ticket made him reject Tinubu when he wanted to be his running mate in 2007.

According to Tinubu, Atiku can attest that the person I selected as my running mate is more qualified for the position than the man who joined him.

“In his desperate attempt to win the election by stoking religious bias, Atiku has reduced himself to uttering baseless lies.

“My running mate and I are here to build a more just and prosperous society for all Nigerians, be they Christian, Muslim or adherents of other faiths.

‘Atiku  will fail in this sad attempt to trick an entire nation,” he said.

The former governor of Lagos State, therefore,  restated his position on religion and politics, saying that when he decided that Shettima was the best selection as his running mate, he listened to, weighed and balanced the advice received from a broad and representative array of wonderful Nigerians.

“Nigerians who deeply care about this nation and the path it must go.

“Some people counselled that I should select a Christian to garner support of the Christian community.

“Some said I should select a Muslim for a similar reason but l clearly could not do both because both positions had merit and right on their side.

“Neither position expressed what was most right and needed for the moment in which we find ourselves and the nation,” Tinubu explained.

The APC presidential candidate noted that all his life, the decisions regarding the team supporting him had always been guided by the principles of competence, innovation, compassion, integrity, fairness, and adherence to excellence.

He stressed that he was not going to depart from those principles at this important period.

Tinubu added that it was more important than ever before,  that he adhered to these principles.

“As governor of Lagos state, these principles helped me assemble one of the most capable governing cabinets any state or this nation has seen.

“I trust in these principles to allow them to, once more, guide me to construct another exemplary teams that can do Nigeria proud.

“In this crucial moment, where so much is at stake, we must prioritise leadership, competence, and the ability to work as a team over other considerations.

“This is the standard I will use to select the rest of my campaign team and if you elect me as your president when I staff my government,” he said.

The APC presidential candidate said that  if elected, he would  select the best people for the right jobs so that they could construct a better Nigeria now and for generations yet to come.

Responding to the false account of the PDP presidential candidate, Tinubu  recalled that Atiku was not among those who founded the Action Congress (AC).

“It was the actual founders of the AC who offered the party’s flag to Atiku because of the need to fight the authoritarian designs of  then President Olusegun Obasanjo and the PDP had on Nigeria’s democracy.

“At that moment, Atiku, the  vice president then,  had been unceremoniously pushed aside if not out of the PDP by Obasanjo.

“We needed to rally all forces to confront the one-party state Obasanjo had in mind and Atiku was simply a beneficiary of this collective duty to fight the attack on multi-party democracy the PDP had launched,” Tinubu explained.

The former governor of Lagos state said he felt sorry for Atiku,  adding that the love of his own ambition had eclipsed his relationship with the truth and an honest account of the past.

Okowa stated this in a congratulatory message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, on Sunday in Asaba.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke winner of the election after scoring 403,371 votes to defeat the incumbent, Gov.

According to Okowa, Adeleke’s victory is the affirmation of Osun people’s will, adding that Nigerians should always stand for good leaders with the interest of the people at heart as Osun people just did.

He said the electorates across the 30 local government areas of the state spoke loudly and very clearly in the affirmation of their choice for Adeleke as next governor.

He lauded former governor of the state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; Sen.

Olu Alabi and other party leaders in the state for working together in the interest of PDP and Osun people.

“Let me also thank the INEC for demonstrating true independence as required by the laws of our land and for improving on the logistics and conduct of the election.

“The most significant aspect of this victory is the peaceful outcome of the election as Osun people conducted themselves responsibly by ensuring that the election was devoid of violence.”The governor also congratulated the PDP and the Chairman of its National Campaign Council for Osun Governorship Election and Governor of Bayelsa, Sen.

“Going forward as a nation, we can only develop further if the people are allowed to chose their leaders at all levels without any hindrance as has been exemplified in Osun.

“It’s therefore, a clarion call on INEC to strive to do the right thing as an unbiased umpire.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I congratulate you my dear brother and friend, Sen.

Ademola Adeleke, on your successful election as Governor-elect of Osun,” he said.
