The International Committee for the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Republic of Senegal have revealed plans for the eighth edition of AFRIMA.
Chinonso Ihekire, AFRIMA Communications Manager, said in this statement on Sunday in Lagos.
Ihekire said that the eighth AFRIMA would take place from January 12 to 15, 2023 in Senegal.
“The Senegalese government has accepted and is committed to hosting the eighth edition of AFRIMA.
“The award ceremony will now take place from January 12 to 15, 2023 in Dakar, Senegal; moving the previous date as announced jointly by the AFRIMA Committee, the AUC and the Republic of Senegal.
“This also means that the voting deadline for nominees will now be moved to January 13, 2023 at 23:00 (CAT).
"This will be the first time that the main award ceremony will be held in a French-speaking country after previous editions," he said.
Angela Martins, Head of the Division of Culture, Social Affairs of the AUC, said that the African Union was excited that the awards would be held in a francophone region.
“The AUC has been a strong partner and collaborator of the prestigious awards since its first edition in 2014.
“AFRIMA has grown to become the only continental platform that aims to promote and spread the musical works and immeasurable talent of African musicians of young and older generations.
“This prestigious platform gives expression to and supports the implementation of the AU's policy instruments in the creative economy, including the AU Action Plan on Cultural and Creative Industries.

“Holding the AFRIMA meeting is therefore a step in the right direction to bring the beautiful city of Dakar back on the map as one of the music capitals in Africa and around the world,” he said. .
In his acceptance speech, the Minister of Tourism and Air Transport of Senegal, Mr. Alioune Sarr, said: “Now Sénégal is also positioning itself to become a champion of music because we are organizing the eighth AFRIMA.
“We are happy to know that Senegal becomes the third country and the first French-speaking country to host this great event.

Recall that the list of nominees were unveiled globally, recently, revealing a total of 382 nominations across all 39 categories.
The nominations, which have been greeted with positive acclaim across the world, are the fruit of a rigorous 10-day adjudication held by AFRIMA’s 13-member jury, in July.
Also, only entries within the validity period of Aug. 20, 2021 to Aug. 5 were considered for nomination for 2022 awards.
The 2022 AFRIMA will be held from Dec. 8 to Dec. 11, a special announcement will also be made on the host country and location for the awards, on Sept. 30.
The AFRIMA awards ceremony will feature a four-day fiesta of music, glitz, and glamour aimed at celebrating Africa, recognising talents and expanding the economic frontiers of the culture and creative industry on the continent.
The event is scheduled to commence with the welcome soiree, followed by the AFRIMA Music Village, the host city tour, Africa Music Business Summit, and the exclusive nominees’ party and concluded with the live awards ceremony broadcast to over 84 countries around the world.

Let us remember that the jury, made up of a 12-member panel of musical experts, in addition to the AUC, held a 10-day adjudication, in July, to select the best entries of the contest to make up the list.
Importantly, only entries within the validity period of August 20, 2021 to August 5, 2022 were considered for nomination for this year's awards.
Leading the nominations regionally this year is the West African region, with 134 nominations, representing 35 percent; while the East African region follows closely with 69 nominations, representing 18 percent; the southern African region is closely vying with 68 nominations, representing 17.8 percent; while Central Africa attracts its weight with 52 nominations, representing 13.6 percent; while the North African region follows closely behind with 49 nominations, accounting for 12.8 percent.
In addition, the Global music region, which represents the music of non-Africans in the diaspora who are still contributing to the growth of the African region, adds 10 nominations to the list, representing 2.6 percent.
Dominating the list with the most nominations this year is South African maverick Costa Titch, with six nominations for his 2021 smash hit Big Flexa in "Song of the Year"; “Revelation Artist of the Year”; “Best African Collaboration”: “Best Artist, Duo or Group in African Electro”; and “Best Artist, Duo or Group in Use of African Dance/Choreography”.
Curiously, the Congolese teacher, Dadju, ties with six nominations, in addition, in “Best Male of Central Africa”; "The song of the year"; "Album of the year"; "Artist of the Year"; “Best African Act in the Diaspora”; and “Best Soundtrack for a Movie, Series or Documentary”.
Close behind the third-highest nominations is Ivorian rapper Didi B, who picks up five nominations for "Best Male Artist in West Africa"; "The song of the year"; "Album of the year"; “Best African Rapper/Lyricist”; “Best African Hip Hop Artist, Duo or Group”.
Again, tied with five nominations, there is also the Algerian disc jockey and record producer, in “Best Male Artist in North Africa”; "The song of the year"; “Best African DJ”; “Best African Act in the Diaspora”; and “Best Artist, Duo or Group in African Electro”.
Also, in third place among the highest nominations is another Algerian singer, Soolking, with five nominations in "Best Male Artist in North Africa"; "The song of the year"; "Album of the year"; "The best video"; and “Best African Act in the Diaspora”.
Lastly, closing the tie for artists with the third-highest nominations is Egyptian rapper and record producer, Wegz, with five nominations for “Best North African Male Artist”; "The song of the year"; “Producer of the Year”; "Artist of the Year"; and “Best Artist, Duo or Group in Contemporary Africa”.
Other artists with four nominations are the Nigerian mavericks, Burna Boy in “Best Male Artiste in Western Africa”; "The song of the year"; "Album of the year"; and “Artist of the Year”); Fireboy in “Best West African Male Artist”; "The song of the year"; “Producer of the Year”; "Artist of the Year"; and “Best African Collaboration”; Kizz Daniel in “Best West African Male Artist”; "The song of the year"; "Artist of the Year"; “Best African Collaboration”; and “Best African Pop Artist, Duo or Group”; and Tiwa Savage for “Best West African Female Artist”; "Artist of the Year"; “Best African Collaboration”; and “Best Artist, Duo or Group in African RnB/Soul”.
The other African superstars with four nominations are Zakes Bantwini (South Africa) in “Best Male Artist from Southern Africa”; “Best African DJ”; "Artist of the Year"; and “Best Artist, Duo or Group in African Electro”; Marwan Moussa (Egypt) in “Best North African Male Artist”; “Best African Rapper/Lyricist”; “Revelation Artist of the Year”; and “Best African Hip Hop Artist, Duo or Group”; and Nomfundo Moh (South Africa) in “Best Southern African Female Artist”; "Album of the year"; “Revelation Artist of the Year”; and “Best Artist, Duo or Group in African RnB/Soul”.
Interestingly, artists who were recognized in the "Most Promising" category last year, whose current nominations indicate significant growth in their respective artistic work include: Ckay (Nigeria) in "Producer of the Year"; "Artist of the Year"; and “Best African Pop Artist, Duo or Group”; Ruger (Nigeria) in “Best Artiste in African Reggae, Ragga and Dancehall”; El Grande Toto (Morocco) in “Best North African Male Artist”; and “Revelation Artist of the Year”.

Organisers of the All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA) said their upcoming award event would aim at promoting the strength of Africa, to tell a positive story of the continent.
The organisers disclosed this during the 8th Edition of AFRIMA’s Adjudication Process and Patrons’ Dinner in Lagos.
Mr Mike Dada, President and Executive Producer, AFRIMA, said the organisers were committed and dedicated to the objectives of the platform meant to motivate Africa.
“We are not moving away from the objectives, which are simple – we use music and culture as platform to unite Africa, to motivate Africa and to create a peaceful Africa.
“We will use culture and music to ensure that jobs are created, more people are employed and more people are taken away from the streets; those are our objectives.
“In addition to that, we use the platform of AFRIMA to promote the strength of Africa and tell a positive story of the continent,” he said.
Dada added that it was a different year and the audience should expect peculiarities, newness and other bumper surprises that Africa was capable of.
He advised that artistes should not be limited by the challenges of the environment and that they should create the doors of opportunities themselves.
“There is going to be light at the end of the tunnel because the opportunities are boundless and there is no limit as to what they can become,” he said.

Cessouma, AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, said AFRIMA was a great contribution to the development of the creative economy.
Cessouma was represented by Ms Angela Martins, Head of Culture Division, Department of Health.
Cessouma said the AU Commission as a long-term AFRIMA partner, commended the leadership of AFRIMA especially its Executive Producer, Dada and his team for their commitment, enthusiasm and efforts.
She said AFRIMA would promote the growth and development of the creative industry of music on the continent, despite various challenges, including the Ebola crisis in 20142015 and the COVID-19 Pandemic since 2020.
“This is a great contribution to the development of the creative economy of the continent and the creation of job opportunities for young people in the various music professions.
“The excellent work that AFRIMA is doing wouldn’t have made high strides without the support of committed well-wishers and believers in the potential and viability of the creative economy of the continent.
“The All Africa Music Awards adjudication process is long and requires professionalism, dedication, fairness, transparency and hard-work.
“It takes an African music and continent lover to perform their duties the way they have been doing since the inception of this process; jury members, we pay tribute and applaud you,” she said.
AFRIMA Patron, Dr Bisi Onasanya, said he felt very proud to be associated with AFRIMA and that there was the need to acknowledge the that Africa was taking the whole world by surprise in terms of music.
Onasanya said African music was being played outside the continent and that it was an achievement as African music was making waves like never before.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the official jury for the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) arrived in Lagos on Aug. 11 for an 8-day adjudication which would herald the list of nominees for this year’s edition.
The AFRIMA jury is composed of a 13-member panel, with two jurors representing each of the five regions and two others representing North America and Europe.
It also has a representative from the African Union Commission (AUC).
