Niger begins mass distribution of 3.7m mosquito nets

Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger has inaugurated the mass distribution of 3.7 million Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) across the state.

Sani-Bello said on Thursday in Minna that the nets were provided in collaboration with some organisations to reduce malaria prevalence in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the organisations include the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Society for Family Health (SHF), Catholic Relief Service (CRS) and Chemonics, with support from Global Fund. “These health interventions are coming at a time that we need to change the narrative of the healthcare indices for the improved healthcare of the people.

“And improve the quality of lives especially among women and children,’’ he said.

The governor directed the state ministry of health and its relevant agencies to close down all illegal clinics and hospitals in the state.

According to him, the illegal health facilities are responsible for most deaths in the state.

“Every life in the state must be accounted for and every death should be investigated,” Sani-Bello said, adding that such facilities operate without required manpower, capacity and equipment.

He emphasised that the ministry must investigate all deaths in such facilities to determine where it was caused by malaria or other diseases, negligence or human error.

In his address, Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said that the use of ITN was a key strategy for the prevention and elimination of malaria.

Ehanire, represented by Dr Abubakar Usman, Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Bida, said Niger, Delta, Kaduna, Taraba, Yobe, Kano and Anambra benefited from the 2022 malaria intervention in the country.

Earlier, Dr Muhammad Maikudi, Commissioner for Health, said that the distribution of the mosquito nets was to reduce the prevalence of malaria in the state to 33 per cent.

Minister decries low usage of mosquito nets in Niger

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has attributed the 35 per cent malaria prevalence cases in Niger to low usage of mosquito nets among residents of the state.

He said this when he led a delegation from the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) and other malaria control partners on advocacy visit on the 2022 Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) campaign to Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger in Minna on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Niger state government is collaborating with NMEP, Society for Family Health (SFH), Catholic Relief Service and Chemonics to distribute over 3.7 million ITN in the state.

Ehanire, represented by Mr Okefu Okoko, Head Integrated Vector Management Branch of NMEP of the Federal Ministry of Health, disclosed that Niger had 35 per cent malaria prevalence which was high because only 16 per cent of people were using nets in the state.

“A lot of work needs to be done, especially on net ownership and usage which is very low despite several efforts.

That is what we are working towards to improve upon in the state,” he said.

He said that Global Fund was supporting Niger state with N11.9 billion for three years to be used for different aspects of malaria intervention such as provision of drugs, nets, seasonal malaria chemo prevention and rapid malaria test kits.

He appealed to the state government to pay it’s counterpart funds of N1.7 billion to ensure that malaria parasite prevalence was reduced below 10 per cent before 2025 and reduce mortality.

Responding, Bello commended NMEP and other malaria control partners for donating over 3.7 million ITN which would go a way in reducing malaria prevalence in the state.

He described the 16 per cent usage of mosquito nets among residents of the state as very low and pledged to provide support needed for the net campaign to ensure that the everyone got access to nets for usage.

Earlier, Dr Muhammad Makusidi, Commissioner of Health in Niger, said about 3.7 million nets worth N4 billion had been allocated to the state for mass distribution.

In her remarks, Dr Jennifer Anyanti, Deputy Managing Director, SFH, said it was supporting Niger Government to distribute 3.7 million ITN to households and create awareness on the nets to ensure it got to everyone in the state.

Gu’ar also said that the programmes had impacted positively by improving the living condition of the poor and the vulnerable across the state and the country at large to become self-sufficient.

She appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for the initiative and Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger for his support as well as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Social Development Sadiya Farouq, for spearheading the programmes.

Mrs Bilikisu Idris, one of the beneficiary of the Conditional Cash Transfer, said that the intervention had helped her to enroll her children in school as well as used the stipend being paid to her to purchase a sewing machine to start a business.

“I have been a beneficiary of the programme for the past three years, before, I was finding it difficult to live but with this intervention, life has become easier for me and my family,” she said.

Another beneficiary of the N-Power, Mr Sani Idris, said that he used the monthly stipend paid to him to sponsor his younger brothers to the universities as well as open a shop to start up a business.

Also, Mrs Talatu Suleiman, a food vendor, appreciated the federal government for the initiative, adding that the intervention had helped her to send two of her children to the university.

“Before the intervention, life was not easy for me and my family, but since I got the job as a cook for school feeding, life has become very comfortable for me,” she said.

2023: I’m the only one in the presidential race -Tinubu

The National Leader of the APC and presidential aspirant on the platform of the party, Ahmed Tinubu, says he is the only one running for the presidential race in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election.

He disclosed this on Friday while addressing delegates of APC at the Niger State Government House  Minna ahead of the forthcoming primary election.

Ahmed explained that his developmental stride and achievements as a former governor of Lagos State were track records that only him could save the country from the present situation.

“I am the only one running for the president of our great country, I don’t know where others are running to; I am the only one who knows the road to prosperity of the country.

“I am a better candidate because of my track records, I have produced many people, starting from councillors, house of assembly members, Senate, Reps. and governors, yet they are pointing accusing fingers at me.

“We will join hands to rebuild Nigeria of our dream, don’t bother about them; I am the only one in the race, follow me I will not mislead you, only me have the knowledge and the brain to think for Nigeria.

“I have the confidence, I have done it in Lagos and I will do better for Nigeria,” he said.

He promised to transform the country from poverty, develop infrastructure and ensure that children were in school as education was the foundation and weapon to fight poverty.

On insecurity, the presidential aspirant promised to eliminate bandits and other criminals disturbing the peace of the nation, adding that it was disheartening all roads had become danger zones for the citizens.

” It takes brains thinker to provide security and a doer will look at economy prosperity and turn it around, We must leave our children and grandchildren with a good educational structure, not to roam on the street.

“I have what it takes which is smartness, I am better than all of them because they lack the brain that I used to rebuild Lagos,” he added.

Earlier in his address, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, former Gov. of Borno, said that Tinubu was synonymous with revolution of democracy, adding that his track records made the present administration to get the support of the southwest in 2015.

He urged the party to give him internal support and gratitude to become president in order to replicate his track records in Lagos in the entire country.

Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello threw a question to the delegates, weather they were in support of Tinubu and the response was overwhelming.

Parliamentary workers in Niger threaten warning strike over Outfit Allowance

Parliamentary workers in Niger on Wednesday in Minna threatened to embark on a three-day warning strike beginning from Thursday over non-Payment of their Outfit Allowance.

The resolution was reached at the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria congress, chaired by the state’s Chairman, Malam Mohammed Sanusi.

Sanusi said that the decision followed the failure by the state government also pay the Consolidated Salary Structure of 2011 by first quarter of 2022 as agreed with the association.

He said the House of Assembly complex would be shut on Thursday and that nobody would be allowed into the building.

“We have three pending issues: the Outfit Allowance paid once a year, the approved Consolidated Salary Structure and the non-payment of legislative duty allowance to some of our colleagues,’’ he said.

Sanusi said also that Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello approved 50 per cent payment of Outfit Allowance in 2018, but that the money had not been paid ever since.

He noted that while parliamentary workers were not getting their entitlements, judiciary workers were fully paid.

He noted also that names of some members of the association were deleted from the legislative duty allowance schedule and that a memo was written to the governor to that regard.

The governor consequently approved payment of 35 per cent of the allowance approved by the National Assembly Service Commission.

Sanusi warned that refusal by government to meet the association’s demands within the period of the warning strike would lead to an indefinite strike.

Gov. Sani-Bello, Niger NASS caucus endorse Sani-Musa for APC national chairmanship

Senator Mohammed Sani-Musa's bid for the national presidency of the All Progressives Congress, APC, received a boost after Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello's endorsement ahead of the ruling party's national convention on February 26.

The governor announced his support for Mr. Sani-Musa when he hosted the National Assembly state caucus led by Deputy Head of Senate Sabi Abdullah, who came to formally introduce him to the national presidential candidate.

Elated by the show of solidarity among members of the state National Assembly towards upgrading Mr. Sani-Musa's aspiration, the Governor described the lawmakers' support as the right thing to do.

He said: “Preferably from the center-north, I want someone from the state of Niger. Home is home. I wish success and luck to my brother. I will do everything he can within my limited power and resources to make sure he gets what he wants.

“I call on everyone to support my friend (Sani Musa) because he is a senator and I think he will give the party a good direction. We will do what we have to do to make sure that we succeed in what we want.”

The governor also emphasized the need to reach out to party leaders and members across the board, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the party's national leader, noting that it will require support not only from the state but from all stakeholders. .

He explained that the election of a national president “is not a decision only of the state of Niger, it is the national president, not the president of the state of Niger.

“We have a national leader who is the president. He must be consulted before we make a decision. I feel like we'll check him out and see what he has to say. We will put them in prayer and I wish them the best.”

While presenting the candidacy for the presidency, Mr. Sabi said that they were at the governor's office to seek his solidarity in making Mr. Sani-Musa's ambition a reality at the party's upcoming national convention.

He said, “One of us, Senator Sani Musa, is running for our party's national championship seat. We feel the time has come to come home, meet our party, seek an audience with you (Governor) as the leader of the state to present our aspiration and seek your support, advice and everything to make it successful.

“We are here to appeal to them to be owners of this process and project. The state needs to appropriate this aspiration because it does not do it for itself, it does it for the state. Seek their blessings, support, and wise advice.

“We want to see an organized and focused match. We are here to say that Sani Musa is running for the position and we are here to seek his blessing and take the project as his project.”

Previously, Mr. Sani-Musa said that his decision to seek to lead the party was based on the need to give the party a new leadership opportunity and build a party that will prepare and develop leaders at all levels of the party for the growth of the country's democracy.

“My reason for opting for the national presidency is not unreasonable. I want to provide leadership that can work with the party's manifesto and be able to show Nigerians that we are capable of making this democracy. We can demonstrate a type of energy that we can do as well as the US does.

“If you look at Africa today, Nigeria is the largest democracy and we must be the shining example for others. APC today is the largest political party in Africa and we must have coherent leadership, leadership that has cohesion, that will give Nigerians the best quality of government,” she added.

The presidential hopeful said he was not bothered by the variety of contestants.

He argued that "the background and experience of each one of us will be used and the delegates will see who is worth what."

All the members of the National Assembly of the state were present both in the state secretariat of the party and in the Government House.
