Oyo Govt absorbs 2,000 teachers to post-primary sub-sector

The Oyo State Government says it has approved the absorption of two thousand primary school teachers, initially seconded to the Post-Primary Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) in the state during the previous administration of the late Gov. Abiola Ajimobi.

Pastor Akinade Alamu, the Chairman, TESCOM, made this known on Wednesday at the celebration of 2022 World Teachers’ Day in Ibadan.

The teachers, who were teaching in secondary schools across the state, had appealed to the state government to either regularise their appointments as TESCOM teachers or revert their appointment as the primary school teachers under the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB).

The TESCOM chairman said that absorption of the teachers into the post-primary sub-sector permanently was another sign of the current administration’s commitment to the development of education.

He, also said that the state government had approved the next round of promotions in the state Civil Service, adding the exercise would begin after necessary paperwork.

Alamu, however, denied insinuations that the state government took 33rd position nationwide, after the just concluded West Africa Secondary School Examination.

The chairman advised politicians to desist from politicising education in the state, saying that education under Gov. Seyi Makinde has been progressing.

Also at the event, Rahman Abdu-Raheem, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, appealed to teachers in the state to complement the state government’s efforts in improving the education sector.

Abdu-Raheem said that the state government would not rest on its oars in ensuring that the education sector keeps soaring high.

“It is pertinent to re-emphasise it that the machinery of the state, ably led by His Excellency, Gov. Seyi Makinde, has the determination to transform the education sector,” he said.

Abdu-Raheem said the state government unprecedentedly appointed 21 Permanent General of Education and Permanent General to enhance effective monitoring of schools and service delivery.

He said that the state government had put in place a lot of activities in achieving his lofty ideas for the sector.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Nureni Adeniran, said that the board would continue to work for the improvement of teachers’ welfare in the state.

“To whom much is given, much is expected; therefore, I appeal to you to key into the government’s resolve to bring back the lost glory of the state in education, by making sure our children excel, both in internal and external examinations,” he said.

Adeniran, therefore, urged the teachers to have a clearer vision of the goal and support the Ministry of Education, TESCOM and OYOSUBEB in ensuring that Oyo State remains top in the education sector.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Council, awarded nine distinguished personalities, from the state.

According to NUT Chairman, Raji Oladimeji, the awards came on the heels of their exemplary leadership, dedication and unalloyed support to teachers’ welfare.

Oladimeji commended the state government’s various welfare packages that had encouraged teachers in remodelling the society and training students in the state.

While pointing at the regular payment of teachers’ salaries and other entitlements, he commended the distribution of free textbooks and exercise books in all schools.

The Awardees were: Ahmed Raji; the Chairman, OYOSUBEB; Dr Nureni Adeniran; the Head of Service, Alhaja Amidat Ololade Agboola; the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun.

Int’l Peace Day: Ex-Gov Ajimobi’s wife sues for peace, decries Russia-Ukraine war

The Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF) says lasting peace is only achievable in any country, if people are united and harmoniously coexist among themselves.

Its President, Dr Florence Ajimobi, also Wife of the late former Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo, made the assertions on Wednesday in Ibadan, on the occasion of the celebration of the World International Day of Peace.

SAAF president, who said that a nation could only achieve lasting peace when its citizens were united and embraced harmonious coexistence, decried the protracted conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

She called for quick intervention of world leaders to resolve the conflict in order to stop the risen deaths and destruction of properties in those countries.

“As at last month, the war in Ukraine has claimed more than six thousand deaths of civilians, while the numbers of refugees had risen to over six millions,” Ajimobi said.

The foundation president said that economic implication of the war with the destruction, was already costing Ukraine as much as 113.5 billion dolllars.

Ajimobi said both nations would require nothing less than 200 billion dollars to rebuild what had been destroyed at the end of the ongoing hostilities, adding that this could be used for other developmental purposes.

“Back home in Nigeria, the Boko Haram crisis, banditry and kidnapping have continued, leading to avoidable losses with the attendant implications for the economy of the country.

“Due to banditry, the economic livelihood of the rural populace has been affected since they depend largely on farming.

“Most people have left the farmlands and have taken refuge in neighbouring areas believed to be safer,” she said.

Ajimobi said that kidnapping had led to financial losses through payment of ransom, indebtedness of families through unplanned expenses and in most cases, forceful closure of businesses and relocation.

The SAAF president added that the Boko Haram insurgency had equally led to the disruption of lives with many people taken refuge in IDP camps.

“As the world marks the International Day of Peace, I pray that we all embrace peace in order to make our society a better place.

“It is only in an atmosphere of peace that development and humans can thrive.

Let us embrace peaceful co- existence,” she said.

Abiola-Ajimobi, son of the late Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, gave the commendation in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Lateef Alade, on Friday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Abiola-Ajimobi had won the party’s primaries on May 26 to contest the Ibadan South-West II State Constituency seat in the 2023 general elections.

The duo of Michael Famurewa and Olawale Ayilara, contesting the Assembly primaries against Abiola-Ajimobi, had approached the court over outcomes of the primaries.

Accord Party’s senatorial candidate in Oyo State says he will prioritise youth empowerment

Mr Kolapo Kola-Daisi, Accord Party’s senatorial candidate for Oyo South says as a lawmaker, he will prioritise youth empowerment for economic emancipation and nation building.

He gave the pledge on Thursday in Ibadan while featuring on the “The Podium’’, a personality interview platform of the Oyo State Council of the NUJ.

Kola-Daisi said he ventured into politics to contribute to nation-building and to give the much-desired quality representation in the legislature, particularly for youths.

“As far as I am concerned, we need to realise as a nation that we have to start prioritising our young people.

“I am into politics not only for myself, but to be an inspiration for young people.

“I hope that when I get there, I will be able to be that role model that inspires young people,’’ he said.

He lamented the effects of ASUU strikes on youths and charged government to take steps to quickly end the current strike.

Kola-Daisi described the teaching profession as the most important profession and should not be taken for granted.

“I am not saying that particular demands have to be met, but we need to look at resource allocation and dedicate a lot more of our budget to help children in school,’’ he said.

He stressed that ensuring that children went through school unhindered was the only way they could graduate to contribute meaningfully to human capital development and nation building.

“I have experience in fund raising, I have experience in mentoring, and I have experience in working with young people to help them to achieve their goals.

“These are some of the experiences I plan to bring to bear as representative of my constituents,’’ he said.

Kola-Daisi described Accord Party as the only progressive party in Oyo State, saying that it had gradually grown to become the main force.

“The predominant party in Oyo State at the moment is Accord Party.

“Anybody who wants to participate on a fair, responsible, welcoming, open, progressive platform which does not discriminate on age, tribe, gender should come to Accord Party,’’ he said.

Kola-Daisi, an in-law of deceased former Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, is a financial expert and banker.

Earlier, Mr Ademola Babalola, the NUJ council chairman, congratulated Kola-Daisi for being the first to feature on the newsmen’s platform ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Babalola assured politicians that journalists in the state were for all the parties and candidates, adding that the platform was open to all.

“This platform is available to candidates of the 18 registered political parties to showcase their manifestoes irrespective of gender or age,’’ he said.

2023: Don canvasses electoral inclusiveness, makes case for women, PWDs

A don, Prof. Grade Ojo, has advocated for electoral inclusiveness for all Nigerians, especially women and people with disabilities, to further enhance democratic stability.

Ojo, of Department of Political Science, University of Ilorin, stated this in a keynote address presented at the Yusuff Olatunji Colloquium in Ibadan on Friday.

According to him, elections do not only serve the purpose of peacefully changing government, it also enhances and confers political legitimacy on the government To the don, who is also a former Chief of Staff to the late Governor of Oyo State, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, elections are an instrumentality through which people choose their leaders and keep them accountable.

“Where an electoral system lacks inclusiveness through outright marginalisation of a large chunk of the society, the canon of democracy, in terms of free and fair election, becomes questionable.

“However, the snag in Nigeria and indeed several other African countries is that elections are far from being free and fair,” he said.

The political scientist expressed concern over what he described as the ‘criminal neglect’ of PWDs in the electoral process.

He noted that as at 2020, in a projected population size of about 200 million, there were more than 27 million Nigerians living with some form of disabilities.

“Thus, where a large chunk of the population is excluded in the electoral process, elections cannot be adjudged free and fair,” Ojo said.

Ojo, while comparing a study on voter participation in Nigeria with that of United States of America, noted that it was aside PWDs, women too had become endangered species in the electoral process.

“Empirical fact shows that the Upper Chamber (Senate) has 109 members, distributed along gender lines, with 102 male members (93.6 per cent) and only seven female members (6.4 per cent).

“The Lower chamber (House of Representatives) has 360 members, with 349 males (97 per cent) and 11 females (6.4 per cent).

“Also, the poor are not sufficiently carried along in the political process.

The recently held primaries by political parties are also a demonstration of lack of inclusiveness,” he said.

Ojo also cited the whooping N100 million and N50 million charged for presidential and governorship nomination and expression of interest forms respectively by All Progressives Congress (APC) as further instances of hindering political inclusiveness.

“The main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, also towed similar lines, with N40 million and N20 million for presidential and governorship nomination and expression of interest forms,” he stated.

The don, however, described as cheering news the concession granted women and people with disabilities in the payment for expression of interest and nomination forms by the political parties.

According to him, it is pathetic that the poor and the middle-class were completely marginalised with the nomination forms that were skewed beyond their.

He also noted that the greatest form of electoral exclusion was the ongoing debate on the secular status of Nigeria.

Ojo said lack of inclusiveness in a political system was nothing but an infringement of citizens’ fundamental human rights.

“While one can not dispute the fact that no system is 100 per cent compliant in terms of inclusiveness, however, the more inclusive a system is, the better for democracy and political stability.

“I like to advocate for a specific quota, even if it is just one per cent for a start, in the parliament and the executive arm of government for people with disabilities.

“To ensure this, the recently amended Electoral Act (2022) may have to be amended further to accommodate people with disabilities.

“The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) too also needs to make adjustments by making adequate provisions for personnel that can assist people with disabilities to perform their civic obligations at polling units.

“To do otherwise is for successive governments to suffer serious legitimacy crisis which may be antithetical to Nigeria’s struggle for consolidation of its nascent democracy,” he said.
