Nkom elected President of Hockey Federation, says he”ll ensure continuity

    By Victor Okoye

Simon Nkom, the Northwestern representative on the board of directors of the Nigerian Hockey Federation (NHF), emerged in Abuja on Thursday as the new president of the federation, vowing to continue the good work of his predecessor.

The Nigerian News Agency reports that Nkom was elected without opposition and that he obtained a maximum of 11 votes to become president.

Sani Kutigi from the north-central zone was also unopposed as the new vice-president after obtaining a maximum of 11 votes.

Nkom, after his victory, thanked the members of his board of directors for the confidence placed in him, adding that his objective was to continue on the good foundations laid by his predecessor.

“I would like to thank my fellow board members for seeing fit to elect me president of the NHF.

“The best part of my life has always been sports, especially hockey, and the point is, I have a passion for sports. So you should only expect a continuation of the legacy of my predecessor.

“I use the word continuation, because I was vice-president of the outgoing board which was skilfully chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi who saw fit to come and give us all his support today.

“Looking at the support we have, it's obvious we have no choice but to be successful,” he said.

Nkom added that he and his board members would work hard to give the federation the necessary support, saying the government alone cannot do the work of running.

“We intend to support government on our small scale and look for other ways to further develop the game.

“Today is not the time for long speeches as we intend to go to work right away and make our work speak for itself.

“My board members and I are fully qualified for the task ahead and we will work hard as a team to ensure we make meaningful progress,” he said.

Nkom also reminded sports journalists of the responsibility to give the board the necessary support, understand its challenges and advise it appropriately to take Nigerian hockey to the next level.

"All hands must be on the bridge to ensure that we take our rightful position, both on the continent and internationally," he said.
