Strike: Bakers in South East to join national body July 13

The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) , South East chapter will withdraw its services from July 13, as directed by its national body. The Zonal Chairman of the association, Chief Dominic Nwibe made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abakaliki.NAN reports that on June 26, National President of AMBCN , Malam Mansur Umar said members  would begin a two-week strike from July 13, citing increase in prices of bakery materials.

“We had a zonal meeting in Abakaliki and decided to follow the directive which is supposed to last for two weeks.“A bag of baking flour which hitherto cost N25,000 presently cost N28,000 and is is worrisome that it will keep increasing.“A bag of sugar which hitherto cost N9,000 presently cost N30,000 while 20 litres of groundnut oil costs about N20,000,” he said.He said that the members felt it was unnecessary to keep increasing the prices of bakery products such as bread at the detriment of customers.“The customers would feel that we are greedy and we want to let the federal government know that the situation had become unbearable.“We are asking for the liberalisation of sugar importation process to break the monopoly by two or three firms.“These firms import sugar and control its price mechanisms as the withdraw of services will make our customers know  we are telling the truth on reasons for price increases”.The zonal chairman regretted that the authorities blamed the high cost of materials on economic effects of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.“We don’t see any justification to this assertion as flour for instance, can be sourced from nearby countries,” he said. Also speaking, the south east Zonal Secretary of the association,  Mr Okey Ezeanata said that bakers have been seriously affected by the development as most of them ‘have closed shops”.“The market forces have been unfair to us and as the time we increased prices of products in April till present, there have been several changes.“We urge the federal government to allow mass participation in our materials’ importation process just like in the telecommunication sector,” he said.NAN reports that the association alleged that the National Wheat Cultivation Committee already constituted is yet to be inaugurated after over one year.

In March, bakers complained that the hike in diesel price and exchange rate volatility caused many of its members across the country to shut down their business operations.

My alleged suspension over alleged financial impropriety a huge joke-PDP chairman

Mr Tochukwu Okorie, the embattled Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ebonyi chapter has described his alleged suspension by some members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) as a ‘huge joke.’
Okorie, at a press briefing on Tuesday in Abakaliki, noted that the allegation of financial impropriety levelled against him by ‘dissident’ members of the SEC was libelous adding that he had briefed his lawyers on the matter.
The party leader therefore urged PDP faithful, supporters and the general public to ignore and disregard the purported suspension and alleged financial impropriety made against him.
He said: “The allegations of financial impropriety against my person is libellous, a huge joke and I have briefed my solicitors accordingly.”
Okorie was allegedly suspended by some members of the SEC in an emergency meeting it held on July 4 which was presided over by Mr Ifeanyi Nworie, the state deputy chairman of the party for allegedly misappropriation of party fund to the tune of N55 million.
Okorie while reacting to the alleged suspension and allegation of financial misappropriation, noted that a sum of N50 million was withdrawn by Mr Silas Onu when he was removed briefly in office by a Federal High Court in Abakaliki on April 13.
According to him, while the appeal was pending in Court of Apppeal, and in disregard to a letter to the management of the Access bank advising against having any financial dealing with Onu who was recognised by a federal high court judgement as chairman.
He said: “Before I left, I got brief of what was about to happen and my lawyers immediately sent a caveat in other words a pre-warning to Access bank telling the bank that there should be no dealing in that account whatsoever way either by me or anyone else.
“Because there was a pending case, any matter of PDP is subjudice and the letter was sent and duly acknowledged, but not withstanding the letter, Onu by hook or by crook gained access to the fund.
” By the Appeal Court ruling of May 24, Mr Silas Onu was never a chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi and has no right to access the party’s fund.
“I cannot be accused of any financial misappropriation because I legitimately did what I had to do as the chairman of the party for the party to move forward.”
Okorie said that SEC received a memo for the ratification of the suspension of certain members of the SEC over alleged infractions adding that the memo was based on the decision of the SEC following a petition brought by one Mr Reuben Okuri of Akaezeukwu ward.
He listed the affected members to include; Messrs Ifeanyi Nworie (state dep. chairman), Mr Chika Nwoba (Publicity secretary), Mr Mudiaga Erhenede (Legal Adviser) and Obinna Iteshi (Treasurer).
“The above-named persons are accused of infractions as outlined in Section 58 (1) of the Constitution of the PDP 2017 as amended.
“The petitioner had also attached a sworn affidavit in support of his petition. SEC unanimously approved and ratified the suspension for the period of one month as presented in the memo,” he said.
Okorie commended resilience of the party members for standing up against plots by some elements in the party to destroy it.
“SEC appreciates and commends the resilience of the teeming members of the PDP and indeed the entire good people of Ebonyi who have doggedly insisted on standing with the party in the face of the ferocious onslaughts constantly launched against it by enemies within and outside.
“SEC wishes to assure Ndi Ebonyi that no amount of hooliganism will distract from our determination to kick out APC from Ebonyi Government House come 2023.
“To this end, SEC enjoins our people to stay focused, eyes on the ball and refuse to be distracted, intimidated and or cajoled as they prepare to cast their votes in forthcoming elections,” he said.”

PDP’ll participate in Ebonyi July LG polls- Party Chairman

Ebonyi chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it would participate in the forthcoming Local Government Council elections as announced by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC).

According to a time table released by the electoral body, the council polls has been slated to hold across the 13 local government areas of the state on July 30.

Tochukwu Okorie, state chairman of PDP indicated the party’s readiness to participate in the July council poll at a press briefing on Tuesday in Abakaliki at the end of the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held at party secretariat.

Okorie announced that the sales of Expression of Interest form and Nomination forms had commenced on Tuesday, July 5.

He noted that PDP would participate in the election provided the process would be visibly transparent and insulated from government influence or interference.

He said: “Consequently, the PDP hereby announces sale of forms to commence Tuesday July 5, 2022 and end Thursday , July 14, 2022. Expression of Interest form for Chairmanship sells for N100,000 only.

“Nomination forms for chairmanship sells for N400, 000 only; Expression of Interest for Councillorship sells for N50, 000 while nomination goes for N100, 000.”

The chairman also announced the suspension of his deputy chairman, Mr Ifeanyi Nworie and three other members of the State Working Committee over an alleged infractions.

Other members affected include: State Publicity Secretary, Chika Nwoba; Legal Adviser, Mr Mudiaga Erhenede and Mr Obinna Iteshi.

The embattled chairman, who was earlier suspended by his deputy over an alleged financial fraud, noted that the purported suspension was a mockery of the Constitution of the Party.

“Allegations of financial impropriety against my person is libellous and I have briefed my solicitors accordingly.

“That Mr Ifeanyi Nworie will gather a bunch of dissidents and purport to suspend a State Chairman is not only laughable but illustrates the depth of his pitiable ignorance.

“As a lawyer that he claims to be, Nworie ought to know the following; every meeting of the party or any organ thereof is at the instance of the state chairman according to Section 21 (3).

“Any request for an ‘extraordinary meeting’ must be routed through the state chairman, section 21 (4); any gathering which falls short of 4(a) and (b) above shall be considered a meeting of committee of friends and not a party meeting.

“He, Nworie, has absented himself from all the meetings of the SWC validly convened by the state chairman.

“Consequently, it amounts to self-abuse for Nworie to arrogate to himself the powers to convene a meeting of the SWC, powers that he does not possess,” he added.

CVR: INEC deploys 5 more registration devices in Ebonyi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has deployed five additional INEC Voter Enrolment Devices (IVED) to boost the ongoing voter registration in Ebonyi.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, disclosed this at a news conference in his office in Abakaliki on Friday.
Chukwu expressed delight over the large turnout of intending registrants in the state.
He said that INEC’s decision to increase the devices, in addition to the 46 in use, was to facilitate the process for interested residents of 18 years and above.
He also said that the commission had embarked on mass sensitisation of residents through the electronic media and town hall meetings with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers.
“INEC in Ebonyi as of today has 51 IVED due to the deployment of additional five.
“The gesture was necessitated by the upsurge of prospective registrants and our desire to ensure that we capture all of them,” Chukwu said.
He said that the extension of the registration deadline from June 30 by the commission was in obedience to popular appeals by Nigerians from different walks of life.
“We started the 20212022 continuous voter registration on June 28, 2021.
“INEC as an organisation has a roadmap and, according to our roadmap, the exercise is supposed to end on June 30.
“But, because of the number of eligible people coming out to register, the commission decided to extend the deadline, indefinitely.
“We, therefore, call on residents, who have yet to register, to avail themselves of the window to get registered,” the REC further said.
He also said that as part of the efforts to scale up the registration, INEC deployed two intervention mobile machines that would be taken around some institutions in Abakiliki to register people, due to the peculiarity of their jobs.
He said that the state had 2,948 polling units with 48 registration centres spread across the 13 local government areas.
Chukwu said that only 242 old PVCs had so far been claimed, while 131,728 were still in INEC’s custody.
He said that the PVCs of those who registered between June 28, 2021, and Feb.14 were already for collection.
He said that of the 19,294 persons that registered, only 18 persons had so far collected their cards.
He said that another category of 7452 PVCs belonged to those who updated and did transfers, among others.
He said that their PVCs had been distributed to INEC Local Government offices.
He appealed to relevant stakeholders to assist the commission to sensitise the people on the need to collect their cards.
Chukwu further said that the commission had activated the portal for the uploading of particulars of the Governorship and House of Assembly Candidates for the general elections.
“The portal will be open between July 1 and July 15 and once we close on Friday, July 15, there will not be any room to reopen it,” he said.
