Insecurity: Gowon leads ‘Nigeria Prays’ in prayer rally in Bauchi

Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), former Nigeria Head of States and National Chairman of ‘Nigeria Prays’ on Sunday, led the group in a prayer rally for peace to reign in the North East zone and Nigeria at large.

Speaking during the one-day prayer rally organised by Nigeria Prays, North- East zone held in Bauchi, with the theme: ‘The Lord of Hosts is with Us’, Gowon said the purpose of the prayer rally was to fervently intercede for the country, most especially in this horrendous and troubling times.

He said the group from all the North eastern zone gathered in Bauchi in absolute submission to God in order to pray for God’s mercies and blessings on Nigeria.

This, he said was to appease the political, social and economic well-being of Bauchi state and the entire North East zone as they grapple with issues of terrorism, insurgencies and various kinds of insecurity and criminality.

“Lord as your people, we bring confession of the needless bloodshed, killings and attacks by the dreadful Boko-Haram insurgencies, banditry and the spate of kidnappings and all kinds of evil in various parts of the country.

“Lord we plead for your forgiveness, mercy and cleansing of the land,” he prayed.

Gowon, who noted that the country is faced with numerous challenges, urged all Christian faithful and other religions in the country to pray to God to help with the solutions of those problems.

“We pray that the land of Bauchi and the entire North East zone shall receive God’s divine visitation and deliverance from insurgency.

“May this war of insecurity end in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi and indeed in the whole country,” Gowon prayed.

In his speech, Gov. Bala Mohammad of Bauchi State commended the former Head of state and all the organisers of the prayer.

He added that the prayer rally would afford them the opportunity to pray for the country so as to overcome its numerous challenges and send God’s guidance to all Nigerian leaders and the citizens at large.

He further stressed that Bauchi state and indeed the North East sub region were very proud of this initiative, adding that Bauchi state needed prayers to overcome the challenges of overpopulation.

He said because the state accommodated people escaping from their crisis zone, the population had risen from 4.6 million to 7.5 million.

“We also need prayers because we have more than 1.3 million out-of-school children and we need prayers to overcome agents of darkness and under development,” Mohammad said.

Association urges Ganduje to provide protective cover for medicine dealers

The Nigeria Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers, Kano State Chapter, has called on Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje to provide effective cover for the legitimate patent and proprietary medicine dealers operating in Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi market.

The chairman of the association,  Alhaji Hussain Labaran-Zakari made  the call while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Friday.

He said the call was necessary in order to enable them to do their businesses without unnecessary harassment or victimization.

Zakari said the association had adopted proactive measures to bring sanity to the way the business was being conducted by preventing some undesirable elements to smear its reputation.

“Over the years the association was up and doing in complying with the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of its members in the business,” he said.

According to him, the time has come for Gov. Ganduje to support the patent and proprietary medicine dealers operating in the market in view of the spectacular role members of the association were contributing to the economic development of the State.

“Providing an enabling environment for the business to thrive will make dealers in the business to have a sense of belonging.

“I can tell everyone that our members are responsible and law-abiding at all times. Any time  the government comes up with a certain policy or rules and regulations that are binding on our members, we always try to ensure strict compliance,” he said.

He said the major challenge facing the association was the issue of unnecessary victimization of its members from certain quarters in the name of sanitizing our business.

“We consider the issue of legality and legitimacy in conducting our business as paramount. We want our able governor to look into the complaint we have put forward in order to  protect us,” Zakari said.

He  said the association had set up a task force saddled with the responsibility of monitoring the conduct of members  to avoid committing acts capable of smearing its reputation.

On the issue of relocating the patent and proprietary medicine dealers to the newly established Dangwauro market located on the outskirts of Kano,  the chairman expressed the readiness of his members to relocate to the new site.

Also commenting,  Alhaji Dahiru Matazu, a patron of the association, commended the state government over  its efforts to ensure smooth relocation of the medicine dealers to the new market.

He, however, called on the governor to effect measures aimed at protecting the  interest of the patent and proprietary medicine dealers.

    Ethics

Kano, Dec. 15, 2029 A Lecturer in Mass Communication Development, Bayero University, Prof Balarabe Maikaba, has advised Journalists in the country to adhere strictly to their professional code of ethics for the development of the country.

Maikaba gave the advice while delivering a lecture entitled:”Media and Good Governance, Issues and Challenges” at the Award/Appreciation Night organised by the Kano Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists held in Kano on Saturday night.

The lecturer, who was a Guest Speaker at the occasion, also advised Journalists to desist from, “blackmail,  yellow journalism and sensational reporting”.

Maikaba, who lamented the poor living conditions of journalists in the country, called on the Federal and State Governments to take urgent steps to address the problem.

“As members of the fourth estate of the realm, journalists deserve better pay packages, just like their colleagues in developed countries, considering the risks and hazards attached to their job,” he said.

On good governance, Maikaba described good governance as “the most important factor in eradicating poverty and promoting development”.

According to him, the media had significant roles to play in promoting all aspects of good governance in the country, especially by checking the excesses of government and those occupying public offices.

“The role of the media in promoting good governance is obvious. This is because all aspects of good governance are facilitated by the existence of strong, pluralistic and independent media,” he said.

He said despite the fact that the media is contributing to good governance in the country, it is, however, facing a  number of challenges such as self censorship for fear of reprisal attacks.

He noted that to achieve good governance, all sections of the society not only the media, had to contribute their quota to institutional growth.

NAN reports that among dignitaries who attended the event were ; Sen.Barau Jubril, Sen. Alhassan Doguwa, Commissioner of Information, Malam Muhammad Garba,  Dr. Sule Ya’u Sule, former Director of Press and Public Relations to ex-Governor Ibrahim Shekarau and the first chairman of Kano NUJ, Prince Ajayi Memaiyeton.

Others were, representatives of the state Commissioner of Police, Director of DSS, Comptroller of Customs, Commandant of Nigeria Immigration Training School, Kano as well as Heads of media outfits in the state, among others.
