Floods were unfortunate, but people must be alive to vote – Sen. Shettima

Sen. Kashim Shettima, vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 election said in Abuja on Saturday that people must be alive to vote.

He was reacting to questions from newsmen who wanted to know what would happen to potential voters whose Permanent Voter Cards were lost to recent floods across the country.

“Beyond the issue of voter’s card, people have to be alive for them to cast their votes.

“It is very disheartening and unfortunate that we lost lives and property to the floods,’’ Shetima said at the unveiling of the national campaign headquarters of Hadizatu Uwani Mustapha (HUM) APC national support group.

“We sympathise with victims; we were in Damaturu on Friday to commiserate with flood victims.

    ’’ he said.

Shettima said, however, that he is just a member of the political party, and that political parties should be allowed to play their role appropriately in that regard.

Commending HUM, Shettima said: “words cannot adequately convey our depth of gratitude for all the sacrifices you have made in mobilising men and resources for the party.

“This is to ensure that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and I win the election and be sworn in as president and vice-president in 2023.’’ He said all hands must be on deck to ensure victory.

“I thank HUM sincerely from the depth of my heart for her commitment, passion and empathy for our course,’’ he stressed.

In her remarks, Mrs Hadizatu Mustapha, chairperson, HUM national support group said no nation would record growth and development except with competent and courageous leadership.

She said the APC had taken the right step in the choice of its presidential candidate in the person of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate, Sen. Kashim Shettima.

She said also that the APC would attract massive votes based on the wide acceptance of the presidential candidate and his running mate across the country.

“HUM national support group has initiated this move to unveil this edifice to house our operations to help us to translate our energies and expertise to deliver our candidates across board come 2023 general elections,’’ she said.

She said the group had no doubt that Shettima would deploy his energies, competences and critical thinking to complement that of his principal in furtherance of the vision set to change the tide of Nigeria.

This according to her is encapsulated in the agenda entitled “Hope Renewed’’ of the candidates.

“Our faith is tied to hard work and not luck.

“We should, therefore, set out to do our best in the interest of posterity so that the next generation after us shall be proud of us,’’ Mustapha said.

ssues-base campaigns critical in delivering dividends of democracy—Lawmaker

The Chief Whip, House of Representatives, Rep. Tahir Monguno, says political parties must focus on issues-base campaigns critical in delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

Monguno said this on Thursday when he inspected the Abuja office complex of HUM Support Group for presidential race.

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) has scheduled Sept. 28 for the commencement of campaigns ahead of the 2023 general elections.

According to Monguno, all the political parties should focus on issue-base campaigns rather than mudslinging“Our campaigns should be based on the economy, security and how to improve the lives of Nigerians.

“How do we bring succour to the lives of Nigerians, especially against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic that has brought about rise in the cost of living?

“How do we give succour to lives of Nigerians and improve security?

“I think campaigns should be centred on these issues.

“It should be issues base rather than being on personality or whether it is Muslim-Muslim ticket or Christian-Muslim ticket,’’ Monguno said.

He, however, said that chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning the presidential election were high.

According to him, we will continue to maintain our winning streaks in the 2023 elections and this is purely as a result of the pedigree and the track records of our presidential candidate and the running mate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.

“They have track records of performance as governors of their respective states.

“We are all living witnesses to how Tinubu transformed the economy of Lagos, making it the second largest economy not only in Nigeria but in Africa.

“And we have seen how Kashim Shettima has performed in Borno in spite of the daunting security challenges that he witnessed during his tenure.

“He was able to successfully navigate this daunting security challenge and deliver dividends of democracy to the door steps of the people.

“So, having regard to their track records and the facts that they are detribalised Nigerians that will carry everybody irrespective of religion or geo-political considerations, I think victory is certain by God’s grace,’’ the lawmaker said.

The Chairperson, HUM Support Group, Hajiya Hadizatu Mustapha, said that the group’s commitment to mobilise support from across the country for ticket was due to their notable performances while they served as governors in their states.

“We have coordinators from the six geo-political zones of the country, we have our structures from the national to state and local government areas of the country.

“We have been encouraging them to ensure they mobilise, especially youths and women to support the candidature of Tinubu and Shettima,’’ she said.

Endeavour to collect your PVCs, APC official tasks electorate

She further described the group as worthy to reckon with and urged them to work for the success of the party in 2023. “It is said that in the animal kingdom all animals are equal but some are more equal than the others.

So, I want to call you the lion of the support groups.

“The calibre of people I have seen in this support group is by every means asset to the APC.

“The time has come for us to put on our serious shoes to work for our party,’’ she said.

Ibrahim said that APC produced sellable candidates for the forthcoming election.

“Our party has produced sellable candidates and despite all odds and challenges we have something to sell and tell about our presidential candidate, and this by no means is what we call divinity.

Customs FOU  Zone ‘B’ arrests 7 suspects, seizes goods worth N1bn in Q1

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ said it seized various goods with Duty Paid Value (DPV) worth  N1 billion in the first quarter (Q1) of 2020.

The Comptroller of the FOU Zone ‘B’, Mr Mustafa Sarkin-Kebbi, said this on Wednesday in Kaduna, while briefing newsmen on the zone’s activities for the period under review.

He said the zone arrested seven smuggling suspects within the period in connection with the various seizures that summed up to 307.

Giving a breakdown of the total seizures in the first quarter he said a total of 4,045 bags of parboiled rice, 1,416 kegs of Vegetable oil, 1,915 cartons of Spaghetti and 920 bales of Textile materials were seized.

Others includeed 96 units of vehicles,  322 bales of second hand clothing, 17 units of motorcycle, 240 parcels of marijuana and other sundry goods.

“Seven suspects were arrested in connection with the 307 seizures with Duty paid Value of N788,683,150.00 within the first quarter,” he said.

He disclosed that some of the seizures were made during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, adding that the arrested suspects would be prosecuted on completion of ongoing investigation.

Sarkin-Kebbi further disclosed that the suspects tried to beat the water tight security at the border check points by concealing the foreign parboiled bags of rice in trucks carrying bags of maize,  beans, water melons and tiger nuts among others.

The seizures, he said, were made at border towns of Kebbi, Katsina, Kano as well as the hinterlands of Zamfara State.

He appealed to the public to report any suspicious movement of trucks and saboteurs whose smuggling activities were inimical to the nation’s economy.

The Comptroller  similarly disclosed that some suspects were arrested and granted administrative bail in connection with some of the seizures, while investigation was continuing.

According to him,  smuggling of goods such as parbioled foreign rice has reduced drastically but notes that his personnel from the intelligent units are also not relenting in taming smugglers’ activities.

Sarkin-Kebbi gave the assurance that the FOU of the zone would not relent in ensuring that activities of smugglers within the zone were brought to a stand still.

He, however,  called for collaboration of the public to voluteer useful information that would assist the unit in the discharge of its duties.
