Motorists decry lingering fuel scarcity, want FG’s intervention

Many motorists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have reported persistent fuel shortages in and around the territory.

The motorists, who spoke to the Nigerian News Agency on Monday in Abuja, said the situation that had dragged on for more than four weeks was causing difficulties.

A correspondent, who monitored the situation, reports that many gas stations were not selling the product, while the few stations that were selling had long queues.

it also reports that the shortage is biting hard as many travelers are stranded.

Following the development, some petrol stations had adjusted the pump price per liter of petrol, except for the retail outlets of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), which sells at N175.

Some gas stations that have the product now sell between N195 and N250.

noted that JENEP, located in Azhata, along Karshi road, NNPCL retail outlet, near GSM village, Zone 1 and NNPCL Zone 4 outlet, were seen selling with long queues.

The situation had caused a traffic jam when officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were seen controlling the traffic.

The shortage was initially due to roads and bridges in Kogi that made it difficult for trucks to move petroleum products there.

However, the shortage had continued and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has yet to comment on the development.

Motorists called on the Federal Government to intervene to end persistent fuel shortages to stop the suffering residents face.

A businessman who simply gave his name as Timothy said he was spending a lot of money patronizing black merchants, adding that the only way he could survive was to increase the goods and services he provided to the public.

“I buy 10 liters of petrol at N3,500 from black vendors as it is not easily available at service stations due to long queues.

“It is unfortunate that no gas station sells below N175. And you can't buy jerry cans to run your generator if you don't drive a car,” he said.

Tobi Emmanuel, a motorist, denounced the pain he had been experiencing for more than four weeks, adding that he spent many productive hours at service stations and made little or no profit.

“Today most stations are not selling along my route which is Nyanyaa so I managed to get to NNPC, Zone 4 is still hopeless due to intimidating queues,” he said.

Another consumer, Ms. Rose Ogbuu, expressed her discontent with the situation, adding that despite the fluctuation in the price of the pump, if fuel was always available, people would not complain.

Public officials and other passengers also denounced the lack of transportation and the fare increase enabled, saying it was demoralizing.

According to them, commercial drivers are now charging N400 for a N250 route due to shortages.

Nigeria needs Atiku to rebound economy – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Nigeria needs its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to rebound its challenged economy.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said this at an interactive session with the media on Saturday in Abuja.

Ologunagba said Nigeria needed Abubakar because of his practical experience, capacity, broad-mindedness and will power to unite the nation, revamp the national economy, and guarantee security of lives and property in the country.

He said that from the party consultations across the six geo-political zones of the country, it was clear that Nigerians across board, irrespective of religion, ethnicity and even political affiliations, accepted Abubakar as the best candidate.

“Abubakar as Vice President to President Olusegun Obasanjo was the Chairman of the National Economic Council.

“During that period, our nation achieved unprecedented national productivity, we also secured $30 billion overall debt relief from the Paris and London Clubs   “Nigeria’s economy was revamped to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world with stable exchange rate.

“Our foreign reserves rose from $2bn in 1999 to $43bn in 2007, while power generation also rose from average daily generation capacity of 1,800mw in 1999 to 4,000 mw in 2007.”   Ologunagba added that under Abubakar as chairman of the economic council, Nigeria witnessed the liberalisation of the telecommunication industry and the advent of GSM and Internet facilities in Nigeria.

He added that the country also witnessed a boost in private Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria.

“More Nigerians opened investments in sectors hitherto controlled by foreigners, including in the downstream and upstream petroleum sectors.

“Owing to the conducive economic environment, there was increase in Foreign Direct Investment and more Nigerians in the Diaspora returned to establish businesses in the country   “There was also expanded and consolidated Nigerian banking industry to make it operate and participate effectively in global banking businesses.

“Nigeria achieved one of the most profitable Stock Markets in the world with an average Return on Investment of over 31 per cent.

”   He added that under Abubakar’s led-economy, the nation also achieved a consolidated Pension System both in the private and public sectors.

“Under Abubakar as coordinator of the economy, Nigeria achieved economic rebound after military rule.

Today Nigeria and Nigerians need Atiku Abubakar to achieve a rebound,” he said.

Ologunagba said that the party and its candidates, Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa, were prepared for an issue-based campaign which would be flagged off on Monday in Uyo, the capital of Akwa-Ibom.   “The PDP will take our campaign to all the states, local government areas, wards and polling units across the country under the unified campaign structure as approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our party.

“Our campaign will be people-driven and focused on PDP and Abubakar’s mission to rescue, rebuild and redirect our nation.

”   Speaking on the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination for the 2023 general elections, Ologunagba said that based on recent Federal High Court judgment, the ruling party had no legally valid candidate for the elections.

“As you are aware, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 nullified the candidature of Gov. Gboyega Oyetola in the July 16 2022 Osun State Governorship election on the ground that his nomination was invalid.

“This is having been conducted and submitted by Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, in violation of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

”   Ologunagba says that for emphasis, Section 183 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) provides that a state governor “shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever”.

Ologunagba said that the judgment reaffirmed the judgment of the Court of Appeal in the case of Jegede vs INEC that a violation of any provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), particularly as it relates to Section 183, portend grave consequences.

“The import of the Sept. 30 judgment of the Federal High Court is that every decision made by Governor Mai Mala Buni as Chairman of the APC is null and void as you cannot place something on nothing and expect it to stand.

“Consequently, the Congresses as well as the National Convention which produced APC Excos including the Sen. Adamu Abdullahi-led NWC is void   “In effect the primaries and Presidential Convention conducted by the Sen. Adamu Abdullahi-led NWC, including the nomination of Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu as Presidential Candidate of the APC is invalid, null and void ab-initio.

NAN) Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, Sokoto state APC governorship candidate for the 2023 General Elections, has called on election umpires and security agencies in the state to allow the game of election to play out for itself without interference.

‘’As it is now, the PDP-led government in the state has failed in boosting all business activities, creating youth empowerment and improving agricultural development.

‘’It has also not enhanced educational development and it has not uplifted the welfare of the civil servants, among many other sectors in the state ‘’All the sectors have been grounded and pledged to reinvigorate them for proper human capital development.

’’ Aliyu described the procession of about eighty associations as colourful and an indication of success to APC.

He pledged to follow the footsteps of the former Governor of the state, Wamakko towards ensuring the provision of social amenities and infrastructural development in the state.

Spokesperson of the associations, Alhaji Bello Mai-Jama’a informed Aliyu that the procession was done just as a mark of respect.

“We have not yet cracked the code to mobilize the full power of business to drive social impact and profit on the African continent.

While there is no silver bullet, the power of Shared Value is clear and there is vast scope where Shared Value can be applied to drive a new wave of productivity and innovation in the continent we call home.

The time to shift is now."

Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) and Shift Impact Africa partnered with the GSM Association (GSMA), a global institution representing the telecom and digital services sectors, to bring together the 6th Annual Summit of Shared Value Leadership Africa and Mobile World Congress Africa (MWCA) Both events will be held side by side at the Kigali Convention Center in Kigali, Rwanda, between October 25-26, 2022 His Excellency Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, who will be joined by several other heads of state, deliver the keynote speech Other speakers include, Sanda Ojiambo, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) ; Mark Kramer, Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School and Co-Founder of the Shared Value Initiative; Dr. Edem Adzogenu, Co-Chair of the AfroChampions Initiative; Jeremy Awori, Executive Director of Absa Kenya; Mar ia Cristina Papetti, Director of Global Sustainability, Infrastructure and Networks of the Enel Group; and Lacina Koné, General Director and CEO of Smart Africa.

The event will bring together leading players from all sectors to explore opportunities for innovation, technology and collaboration to find solutions to the digital inclusion challenges facing Africa.

    CEO and Founder.

“The connection between social progress and business success is becoming clearer, and companies must partner with governments, NGOs, and yes, even competitors, to fully capture the economic benefits of creating shared value as a collective.

    ”.

The unifying theme of the Africa Shared Value Leadership Summit, 'One Africa, One Voice', underscores this need for organizations to work together across borders and industries to benefit all Africans in a sustainable way.

Business and other leaders will delve into issues such as the role of technology in addressing climate risks fairly; how companies can accelerate digital inclusion in Africa, particularly for disproportionately affected groups such as rural populations and women; how we ensure that digital connectivity and shared value become Africa's growth engines, as well as the role of shared value thinking and digital innovation in driving intra-African trade.

“The African Union Digital Transformation Strategy 2020-2030 aspires to universal digital access and a single pan-African digital market by 2030.

Achieving this would create a profound impact on the continent.

For example, the World Bank estimates that a 10% increase in mobile internet penetration could translate into a 2.5% increase in gross domestic product (GDP) on the African continent,” says Barnard.

“When Africa wins, the world wins, and now more than ever, it has become imperative to develop meaningful and effective partnerships for development between the public and private sectors.

This Summit creates a unique opportunity and platform where leadership, as a collective, can discuss and provide input and solutions on how we can accelerate Africa's growth through affordable and accessible connectivity for all."

Technology has the power to increasingly change the future of Africa and address many of the continent's systemic challenges.

However, the digital divide in Africa remains marked.

Less than a third of Africans have access to broadband connectivity.

Of the 25 least connected countries in the world, 21 are in Africa.

Three hundred million Africans live more than 50 kilometers from a fiber or cable broadband connection.

At just 36%, internet penetration in Africa compares poorly to the world average of 62.5%, according to the latest global internet penetration rate from Statista.

“While digital innovation creates new and exciting opportunities, it can exclude those who do not have access to the digital economy.

Creating a healthy and inclusive digital economy will require new thinking to generate safeguards against the many risks inherent in the application of technology, while channeling resources to the areas of innovation that generate the greatest social impact on the continent”, says Barnard.

The Summit will host experts from across the industry for two days of networking, learning and collaboration.

Sponsors include Abbott, Absa Bank Kenya, Old Mutual, Visa and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

“The support of our sponsors, companies with a purpose that are committed to promoting sustainability in the continent, has allowed us to plan an event that will be completely different from previous years.

We would like to invite interested parties to register and join us in Kigali to connect, interact and explore solutions to bridge the digital divide and drive growth in Africa,” says Barnard.

All registered delegates will have full access to both events during the Summit.

There is also the option to attend the Summit virtually, via live streaming, which includes access to combined keynote speeches from some of the continent's business luminaries.

“We have not yet cracked the code to mobilize the full power of business to drive social impact and profit on the African continent.

While there is no silver bullet, the power of Shared Value is clear and there is vast scope where Shared Value can be applied to drive a new wave of productivity and innovation in the continent we call home.

Clickatell helps Nigerians access eNaira services, driving financial inclusion

Clickatell (https://www.Clickatell.com), a CPaaS innovator and Chat Commerce leader, has partnered with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) (https://www.CBN.gov.ng) to offer fast and simple services.

and cost-effective eNaira banking services for all Nigerians using the USSD channel, eliminating the need for data and available on all phones.

Clickatell has collaborated with CBN to launch a USSD channel for its central bank digital currency eNaira (CBDC) (www.eNaira.gov.ng) as part of the country's push to make basic banking accessible to all Nigerians, which will ultimately drive financial inclusion.

eNaira was launched in October 2021 as Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said Africa's first central bank-backed digital currency would help boost remittances, encourage cross-border trade and help his government make welfare payments.

    more easily.

With financial inclusion at the core of eNaira's goals, President Buhari also said that he believed the CBDC would increase the country's GDP by $29 billion over the next 10 years.

“The introduction of the USSD short code allows unbanked Nigerians, many of whom do not have smartphones, to access cashless banking services and is a major victory for the stated goals of providing meaningful financial inclusion.

Clickatell's role in making this a reality has been one of the most significant achievements of our engagements in Nigeria,” comments Uzo Nwani, Clickatell's Commercial Director, West Africa.

The new USSD channel allows Nigerians to use the short code *997# to create their eNaira wallet.

Once done, they can easily check balances and transfer funds, as well as securely purchase airtime or data for themselves or their friends and family.

Protecting their wallets is also easy on the channel and users can check and update their information, change and reset their pin or even lock the wallet if needed.

“The USSD channel is a vital part of our journey towards realizing our vision of financial inclusion.

We see eNaira as a leap forward in the evolution of money.

Therefore, CBN is working with partners who are committed to leveraging this new technology for continued innovation and to deliver exciting new features,” comments CBN Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, Dr. Kingsley Obiora.

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, or USSD, is a communications protocol that is supported by 99% of GSM phones.

It remains particularly relevant in developing communities where it is used to provide services at much lower cost and can be used without the need to access the user's SIM card.

Despite the rapid growth of smartphones, the majority of Nigerians (https://bit.ly/2HRLANU) are now using feature phones, making an excellent case for USSD's offering.

The CBN is counting on the new channel to make rapid strides in bringing most of the 30% of unbanked Nigerians into the formal banking system.

As part of its efforts, CBN is working hard to increase awareness and education around the new digital currency and has offered an incentive of 200 eNGN airtime for the first 100,000 users to use the eNaira USSD feature.

Looking ahead, Nwani says the Clickatell solution ideally positions the system for new and collaborative additions to help power eNaira's services.

“Our Chat Flow product provides a strong platform to support rapid innovation.

Digital currencies provide measurable customer benefits, including lower costs and a simple user experience, and adding new innovative features over time will definitely attract more customers.

There is no question that CBN has set the benchmark when it comes to financial inclusion in Africa, and we look forward to being a part of that journey,” says Nwani.
