Centre decries alleged inhuman treatment of Abuja hotel cleaner by DSS

Seeks justice for victimSterling law centre has decried an alleged inhuman treatment of one Patrick Okachi, a cleaner in Statement Hotel, Abuja, by the Department of Security Service (DSS).

The centre, in a statement yesterday, jointly signed by its Director, Deji Ajare and Executive communication officer, Adaobi Iyiegbu, called on the FCT Commissioner of Police, to direct immediate investigation and prosecution of suspects in the appropriate court.

The centre said: “On November 3, 2022, Okachi who works as a cleaner in Statement Hotel, Abuja was carrying out his normal duties when he was summoned by Celina Okafor, the Secretary of the hotel.

“She accused him of stealing an undisclosed amount of money from the office of the Chairman the previous day and claimed that he was caught on CCTV camera.

He denied this allegation and demanded to see the CCTV footage, which was not shown to him.

“Okafor, instead of taking the lawful route, to investigate and verify her suspicion, decided to take the route of infamy, by contacting one Festus who arranged for two rogue officials of DSS to come into the office, pick Patrick and torture him by beating him severely with all kinds of weapons.

They went further to insert sharp objects in the penis, all in a bid to make him agree that he committed the theft.

“They took Patrick to another location in Dawaki, where they kept him for two days.

When it was clear that Patrick was not going to confess to the crime he did not commit, the men took Patrick out and dumped him on the streets of Abuja.

” The centre noted that the brutality has been reported to the Central Police Station at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja and an investigation has been launched into the matter.

The centre therefore appealed to Police authorities to ensure that any and all attempts at influencing the investigation and prosecution of the suspects are rejected.

They called on all relevant agencies, such as the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, Malami Abubakar, National Human Rights Commission, the National Committee Against Torture, civil society organisations, the  media among others to lend their voices and support in their different capacities to ensure that Patrick gets justice.

Insecurity: YPP commends DSS, calls for use of artificial intelligence

The Young Progressives Party (YPP), has commended the Department of State Services (DSS), on its efforts at curbing insecurity in the country, The YPP, however, called for increased artificial intelligence gathering.

The party’s Presidential Candidate, Mr Malik Ado-Ibrahim, said this at a news conference on Friday, in Abuja.

Ado-Ibrahim said that the DSS, in partnership with other security agencies, must explore the use of both artificial and human intelligence, in order to win the war against insecurity.

“What we have seen by the DSS in the arrest of suspected terrorists shows that there is need to explore artificial intelligence gathering, in order to halt security threats in the country.

“We must commend the DSS for acting the way they did through the use of intel.

“We have seen that we have all it takes as a country to halt insecurity, and as such the army should not always be brought into internal security issues.

“We can start by changing the narrative in handling security issues through the introduction of a National Guard, as I stated in my manifesto.

“And this will allow for the use of both artificial and human intelligence, which is the best method of gathering information, to halt insecurity in the country,” he said.

He urged governments at all levels, to make the protection of lives and properties of citizens a top priority in governance.

The YPP presidential candidate also urged government to be sensitive to people’s feelings and have empathy for them in the face of the rising security threats.

“We must understand that matters of security is not political, but a matter of life and death that any government must strive to preserve,” he said.

Ado-Ibrahim recommended the use of modern security technology, intelligence-gathering and proper channels for disseminating security related information to the public.

He said that only a modern security architecture was capable of detecting security threats and proffering immediate solutions to prevent possible attacks and escalating tensions.

Media, security agencies strategic partners in national development – Abia DSS boss

The Abia State Director, Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Friday Onuche, says the media and security agencies are strategic partners in national security and development.

Onuche said this on Tuesday, when the new officials and some members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia Council, visited him in his office.

“Journalists are critical stakeholders to DSS and other security agencies,” he said.

He said that the organisation under his watch would collaborate with the chapel for the cross-fertilisation of ideas.

“My office will be open for you at all times, so feel free to interface with us.

“We are not spirits to know everything happening in society.

So, there is the need for us to collaborate with the chapel to get vital information,” the DSS boss said.

He said that the agency had the responsibility of ensuring national security for development but required the support of the media in its intelligence gathering efforts.

“There is a nexus between national development and national security.

“There will not be national development without national security and vice versa,” he said.

He, however, admonished journalists to always verify their facts before going to press to avoid causing national crisis with their reportage.

Onuche further urged the media to shun the peddling of fake news, capable of plunging the country into chaos.

Earlier in a remark, the Chairman of the chapel, Chief Obinna Ibe, solicited the support of the agency in redefining journalism practice in the state.

Ibe said that the agency could assist NUJ to check the nefarious activities of quacks in the profession.

According to him, these quacks are the ones giving the  profession a negative image.

FRSC cautions politicians against reckless driving during campaigns

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged political parties to respect and obey traffic rules during campaigns as only the living rules.

The corps also urged all drivers to avoid speeding and recklessness while on the road.

The call was made during the launch of the ember months campaign in Ondo State on Thursday.

Mr Uakhemen Ojeamiren, the Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ondo states flagged off the campaign at Ilesha motor park in Akure.

The theme of the 2022 ember months campaign is “Avoid Speeding, Avoid Overloading And Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive”.

Ojeamiren said the ember months were characterised by high vehicular movements and more accidents because of the tendency of drivers to be impatient and in a hurry.

He said that it was imperative for motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, intake of alcohol and use of expired tyres to avoid traffic accidents.

The zonal officer said that the corps had undertaken numerous enlightenment programmes in the media, motor parks and places of worship on the need for safe driving.

“I am appealing to motorists particularly the people of Ondo state to desist and have attitudinal change while driving to arrive safety during the yuletide.

“Drivers must be conscious while driving and avoid speeding, avoid use of expired tyres and ensure that they have their driving licence with them,” he said.

Also, Ezekiel SonAllah, the Sector Commander, said it was important for stakeholders to collaborate and ensure safety on the road.

He said already, the command had recorded about 20 per cent road accidents of the figure recorded within the same period in 2021. According to him, 126 road traffic crashes involving 879 persons were recorded during the ember months in 2021. He said that out of the figure, 148 were injured and 96 died, adding that at the moment the command has barely recorded 20 per cent of what it did in the previous year.

“I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to political parties to respect and obey traffic rules and avoid reckless driving during campaigns as only the living rules.

“The command is out to remind you that you can only celebrate when you arrive alive, hence the need for united efforts against wrong use of the road,” he said.

The sector commander said erring driver would be dealt with decisively and assured that the road marshals would continue to take measures to save the lives of road users.

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, represented by his Senior Adviser on Transport, Tobi Ogunleye, pledged more support to the FRSC to discharge its duties.

Akeredolu said the government had established a driving school to provide lessons and orientation for drivers, to ensure safe driving culture.

“We have re-launched the state Passenger Transit Safety Insurance Scheme where every passenger is covered in case of accident for free medical treatment.

“We will continue to construct and rehabilitate more roads, because the lives of our people is more important to us.

“We therefore call on other major stakeholders to join hands with the FRSC to save lives especially on highways,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the campaign was attended by the state Commandant of NSCDC, Olayinka Olatundun; representatives of the Police, Army, NDLEA and DSS, as well as the Deji of Akure, among others.

2023: APGA Guber candidate, campaign team attacked in Ebonyi

Prof. Bernard Odoh, Gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ebonyi, have expressed worry over the continuous attack on party members across communities in the state.

Odoh told newsmen in Abakaliki on Thursday after his visit to Izzi local government area of Ebonyi that suspected members of Ebubeagu security operation attacked his convoy and injured his supporters.

The Gunernatorial Candidate urged supporters of other political parties to support peaceful campaign in the state and Nigeria at large.

According to him, nobody can force anyone on anybody in Ebonyi ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“People are not stupid and they have their right to make a choice of who becomes their leader.

This is not how to run democracy, we have the right to reach out to our people.

“I have a local government, we have Ezza north, Ezza Ezza South, Ishielu, and Ikwo, wont other parties come for campaign in these areas?

    ,” he added.

On the alleged attack on his convoy by suspected members of Ebubeagu in Izzi, Odoh noted that nobody was injured.

“Nobody was injured, but one of our cars was riddled with bullets.

“Yes, today we scheduled a visit to Izzi local government, because it is part of the State; it’s one of the 13 local government Areas in the state; we have our supporters and campaign office.

“As earlier as 6 am this morning, I started getting distress calls; one of our coordinators in the area called and said that some members of other political parties called and warned him that no visit should take place in the area.

“I am the candidate of APGA in Ebonyi, Professor Bernard Odoh is my name; I am in this race to govern the whole local governments in the State, therefore, if I cannot go to Izzi, then, I am not qualified to run for the election.

“That is why I had to go to Izzi, defiled all their orders and threats, to go to the place.

“We were confronted by suspected members of Ebubeagu; they shot at one of our cars, you can see the glass shattered.

We went there with official security men, the police and DSS operatives, and our campaign team.

“The political war is directed at us, and we want the world to know what is happening in Ebonyi.

“We are not cowards or fools.

Nobody can force anyone on anybody in Ebonyi,” he explained.

Reacting to the development, Mr Friday Nnanna, Commander of Ebubeagu in Ebonyi, said the alleged attack on the APGA guber candidate’s convoy did not happen.

    ‘Ebubeagu never attacked him.

    Where was he attacked?
