    UN Global Compact Network Nigeria advocates human rights promotion

    The United Nations Global Compact Network Nigeria has underscored the need for the promotion of human rights in order to advance the UN guiding principles on fundamental freedom.

    UN Global Compact Network Nigeria is a business-led sustainability initiative of the United Nations Global Compact that was inaugurated in Nigeria in 2007 during the Nigerian Economic Summit.

    Naomi Nwokolo, Executive Director, UN Global Compact Network Nigeria, gave the advice in her welcome address at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Business and Human Right Roundtable (NBHR22), on Wednesday.

    The roundtable themed: “The implementation of the national action plan for business and human rights in Nigeria” was organised by Global Compact Network Nigeria in collaboration with Global Rights, both NGOs, from Oct. 26 to 27, 2022. Nwokolo, also Chair of the African Regional Network Council, said, “It is critical that steps must be taken to foster constructive relationships with local, national, and international institutions, to advance human rights.

    “At the national level, sharing of expertise, methodologies.

    and best practices are very beneficial.

    “Let us move more quickly to implement types of institutions and laws that support individuals in asserting their rights.

    “We must approach human rights promotion as a component of a global initiative to advance the UN Guiding Principles, referred to as ‘internationally recogniSed human rights’.

    “This includes those guaranteed by the International Bill of Human Rights.

    “These stands for rights are outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

    ” She explained such rights to mean that businesses should ensure freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining as well as the abolition of all forms of forced or compulsory labour.

    Identifying the abolition of child labour, abolition of employment and occupation discrimination as some of the issues, Nwokolo said that businesses often violated human rights when they failed to accord them such enough consideration.

    She further said that the UN Nations Global Compact had launched its Business and Human Rights Accelerator, a six-month learning programme to equip companies with the requisite knowledge and promote human rights.

    “With such extensive corporate human rights due diligence procedure, businesses can move away from a risks-to-business approach and toward a risks-to-people approach.

    Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), says it has begun aggressive metering under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) and National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) Scheme to bridge the metering gap within its operational network.

    Mr Godwin Idemudia, General Manager, Media Communications, EKEDC, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Friday.

    Idemudia said that the scheme had enabled the company to have higher metered population than post-paid.

    He said the company had ensured that distribution transformers were metered, to allow a robust calculation for customers on estimated billing, pending metering of all customers.

    According to him, NMMP is currently suspended as Phase 1 is yet to commence.

    Idemudia said that the disco was currently working on the MAP Scheme, where customers could get meters within 10 working days of payment confirmation.

    “All is to eliminate estimated billing and bridge the metering gap.

    The more customers that participate in the scheme, the earlier our chances of metering all customers.

    “As at the start of the NMMP Phase 0, an initiative of the Federal Government, where meters were provided to customers for free, the goal of the initiative was to meter our entire population within five years (2025),” he said.

    On energy theft and other offences, Idemudia said that about 160 people were either been convicted or pending conviction since the inception of power sector privatisation.

    He said the company had over 365,255 prepaid customers, 173,663 post-paid customers and 7.65 billion key customer group.

    Idemudia said, “We have purchased tools and equipment to aid the speedy restoration of faults in areas with underground cables.

    “In addition to that, we are working on replacing the cables, but are pacing ourselves as it is a huge CAPEX investment.

    The EKEDC spokesman said that the company was actively exploring possible partnerships with several entities to improve power supply via embedded generation.

    He added that a substantial amount of these engagements were at advanced stages and shall be executed in due time.

    East Africa Public Relations Week will be held in Nairobi, Kenya

    The city of Mombasa will host the first ever East Africa PR Week, a collaborative event bringing together some of East Africa's brightest minds in the communications sector.

    Under the theme "Improving sustainability through communication", the event is expected to strengthen lasting partnerships between the participating countries, based on the objective of fostering sustainable practices in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

    The event, an initiative of the Public Relations Society of Kenya-PRSK, will be organized jointly with other communications coordinating bodies in Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.

    According to Mr. Arik Karani, President of PRSK, this will be the largest conference ever held in the region.

    This year, we are taking the annual PRSK summit to a new level by hosting the first ever East African PR Week. One of the key strategies for the Kenya Public Relations Society council is to bring East African countries together through cohesive communication.

    With the PRSK turning 50 years old, we thought of bringing together the East African PR Associations under one roof.

  •  The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry LCCI and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture NACCIMA have condemned attack on Dangote Cement Obajana Plant which left seven persons injured and property destroyed They called for the intervention of relevant agencies to enable the Kogi government and Dangote Cement Plc come to a truce They made the call on Friday in Lagos in statements in reaction to the attacked on Dangote Cement Plc Obajana Plant which left about seven persons injured and property destroyed Dr Chinyere Almona Director General LCCI described the news of the attack on the Dangote Cement Plant as shocking and disappointing ill construed and avoidable Almona said the attack was a reflection of the poor handling of investment protection in the country According to her the LCCI believes there are more decent ways to handle regulatory and legislative matters concerning businesses in Nigeria than resorting to violence She recommended a meeting of all government agencies connected with the acquisition of the cement plant to resolve any differences thereof The chamber sees a role for the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council PEBEC the Bureau of Public Enterprises BPE the Nigeria Investment Protection Commission NIPC and the Kogi State government in resolving the issue The growing mining industry in Kogi State has benefitted from the production activities of the Dangote Cement Factory which offers both infrastructural and Corporate Social Responsibility CSR projects to enhance the standard of living in the state It is therefore expected that the government would be interested in creating an enabling business environment that can attract both local and foreign investors And where there are infractions handling such should be in accordance with best practices and the rule of law that protect investors rights and human lives We advocate a win win situation for businesses and the government and will therefore call on all parties to exercise caution and be protective of jobs assets of production and government revenues from corporate organisations like Dangote Cement Factory she said Almona stressed that henceforth the process that could be taken must not necessarily shut down the factory and endanger jobs products and government revenues This point is critical as wrong handling or unprofessional approaches to resolutions can send negative signals to potential foreign investors she said Also Mr Olusola Obadimu Director General NACCIMA regretted the action of Kogi State government which had resulted in the hasty sealing of the Dangote Cement Factory at Obajana Obadimu said the action could have surely been resolved on a more conciliatory and amicable note He stated that his view was based on the key consideration that the huge production plant supplied key domestic inputs cement into the economy employing hundreds of thousands of Nigerians directly and indirectly This he explained was aside from its substantial budget for CSR outside of taxes He noted that shutting off the factory did not necessarily help the controversial issue of compliance on tax remittance to the Kogi State government Rather Obadimu said a continual operation of the plant would more likely facilitate a faster resolution of the dispute We thus suggest that the company be reopened as quickly as possible to enable it continue its operation and fulfil its necessary responsibilities This is not just on tax but also keep the hundreds of thousands of Nigerians in its direct and indirect employment dutifully engaged and furthermore sustain its crucial services not just to the people and government of Kogi State but Nigeria in general he said NewsSourceCredit NAN
