By Muhammad Adam

As many as seven suspected petroleum smugglers have been reported burned alive in an oil tanker fire in the local government area of Mubi, Adamawa.

Mubi is a commercial nerve of Adamawa and it borders with the Republic of Cameroon.

An eyewitness, Alhaji Mansur Bala, told the Nigerian News Agency that the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.

Bala said the fire started when people who died were transferring petroleum products from a tanker to more than 1,000 plastic cans at a gas station.

Another eyewitness, Malam Iliya Haruna, said he counted seven corpses which were burned to the point of being unrecognizable.

Haruna said that among the corpses were two well-known paternal brothers in the oil business in Mubi.

Dr Mohammed Sulaiman, executive secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) confirmed the incident.

Sulaiman, however, said only three people were killed in the incident, while two sustained injuries to varying degrees.

“The fire of an oil tanker occurred in the early hours of Wednesday around 1:30 am.

“So far, three people have lost their lives and two have been injured by fire burns and they are receiving medical treatment at Mubi General Hospital,” Sulaiman said.

He added that goods worth millions of naira were also destroyed by the fire.

The executive secretary therefore advised dealers of state petroleum products, as a safety measure, to avoid operations during odd hours.
