Supreme Court Removes Shekarau as Kano Senator-Elect
On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that Rufai Hanga is the senatorial candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the senator-elect for Kano Central Senatorial District.

Shekarau had been the flagbearer for the NNPP but changed party affiliations to the PDP.

However, Shekarau’s name stayed on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s candidate portal for the National Assembly election.

Although it was discovered that Shekarau wasn’t present when certificates of return were issued to senators-elect in Abuja, on 7 March, INEC still declared him as the winner of the Kano Central Senatorial District election based on results from the polls.
NNPP agent, Shehu Usman, disputed Mr Shekarau’s emergence as the winner of the polls, alleging that INEC denied replacing Mr Shekarau’s name with Mr Hanga’s despite court orders.
Nonetheless, the Supreme Court affirmed the decisions of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal to uphold Hanga’s candidacy as the NNPP flagbearer.
