4 students of University of Lafia abducted by gunmen

The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Nasarawa state, has confirmed the kidnapping of four students from the institution by armed men.

Abubakar Ibrahim, Head of the university’s Information and Public Relations Unit, confirmed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday in Lafia.

Mr. Ibrahim said that the students were kidnapped in Mararraba, a community near the institution’s campus, on Thursday, January 13 at 11:30 p.m.

The Information chief said Professor Shehu Abdul-Rahman, vice chancellor of the university, expressed his dismay at the unfortunate development and condemned it in the strongest terms.

Mr. Ibrahim quoted VC as saying that the kidnapping of students constitutes a threat to education in the country and demanded the unconditional and immediate release of the victims.

In the statement, the VC on behalf of the university authorities expressed its solidarity with the families of the students and assured them that serious efforts are being made to ensure their speedy rescue.

Ibrahim said the deputy foreign minister visited the area where the students were abducted for an on-the-spot assessment and a formal report of the incident was made to the police.

The spokesman also called on the students of the institution to remain calm and carry out their normal activities on the university campus.

When contacted, Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed that the institution’s management had reported the matter to command.
