Sri Lankan police hunt factory staff after coronavirus outbreak

Sri Lankan police on Thursday launched a manhunt for employees of a leading garment export factory, who are evading authorities urgently seeking to test them for coronavirus.

Police Deputy Inspector General, Ajith Rohana said officers had placed 18 police districts under curfew to facilitate the search for around 150 missing employees of Sri Lanka’s main garment exporter Brandix.

The missing workers failed to come forward for testing after a coronavirus outbreak was discovered among employees of the company’s factory in Minuwangoda on Saturday.

Most staff members had volunteered to take the test, with 1,034 workers testing positive.

Brandix has factories in Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh and mainly exports to the United States, Europe and Asian countries including China and Japan.

The company recently produced 200 million face masks for export to the United States and supplies a number of major retailers worldwide including Lidl, Amazon, Gap, UQ and Stichd.
