1 No fewer than 18 primary school’s pupil who won a kids’ football competition in Rivers have gotten automatic admission into the Real Madrid Football Academy, Port Harcourt, by the Rivers Government.
2 Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers announced his administration’s gesture on Friday at a reception for the players and technical crew of Banham Model Primary School, at Government House, Port Harcourt.
3 The school’s team won the 2019 Channels International (Under 13) Kids Football Competition.
4 Wike also used the occasion to commend the State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB) for diligently implementing the Rivers’ School Sports Policy which led to the victory by the School.
5 Wike said that his administration would assist the kids achieve their sporting goals.
6 He said: “I want to commend the leadership of Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board for implementing our goals in developing sports across all schools in the state.
7 “We are gathered here today because of the successful implementation of this policy.
8 “I, therefore, offer all the players of Banham Model Primary School Port Harcourt, automatic admission into the Real Madrid Football Academy. The Real Madrid Football Academy opens in August.’’
9 According to him Rivers government will sponsor the players and their coaches to Madrid, Spain, for two weeks of training at Real Madrid Football Club.
10 He also directed Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the Rivers Government, to liaise with the school management to prepare the processes for the children to travel to Spain during the long vacation.
11 Wike charged the children to remain focused, disciplined and work toward emerging as successful footballers in the future.
12 “Focus on football. It will take you places. Don’t allow anyone to deceive you to join cult groups. While you are playing football, read your books.
13 “That is why at the Real Madrid Football Academy we have merged football and education for the training of the children,’’ he said.
14 Director of Administration, Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board, Diminary Franklin, said that the children displayed the governor’s winning spirit during the Championship.
15 He said that the state government’s funding of sports in schools through the provision of sports equipment and necessary funds, led to the growth of sports in all schools.
16 The school’s Captain, Kingdom Tamuno, introduced his colleagues and also presented the trophy to the Governor.
