A total of 4,425 organ transplants were carried out in Spain during 2020, a decrease of 18.73 percent compared to 2019, according to data published on Monday by the Ministry of Health.

At a press conference, Spain’s Secretary of State for Health Silvia Calzon said the number of transplants showed “the strength of the Spanish Transplant System in the midst of adversity. Despite slowing down the pace of activity, we remain in a position of excellence worldwide.”

According to the National Transplant Organization (ONT), 2,700 kidney, 1,034 liver, 336 lung, 278 heart, 73 pancreatic and four intestinal transplants were performed in 2020.

These measures meant that after the number of transplant operations dropped in the first six months of 2020, the rate of organ donations and transplants increased between June-December to levels similar to the same months in 2019.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the ONT, Beatriz Dominguez-Gil, said that the reconstruction of the program was due to a plan designed by the ONT and Spain’s 17 Autonomous Communities, which aimed to “preserve this essential activity…and guarantee the safety of patients and professionals.”
