South African Universities to Host Prestigious World Association of Sport Management Conference in 2026
The Hosting Universities
The North-West University (NWU) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) have won the bid to host the World Association of Sport Management (WASM) conference in March 2026. The biannual conference will be held for the first time on African soil, and NWU and CPUT plan to co-host the event at the Newlands Stadium, where the CPUT Sport Management Department offices and lecture halls are located.
The Successful Bid
The successful bid is a result of hard work and collaboration between the two academic institutions, as well as the support received from various parties like the Office of the Western Cape Premier, Western Cape Government Sport and Recreation Department, WESGRO Cape Town and Western Cape Tourism, Trade and Investment, as well as Cricket South Africa. Hosting this international conference at the Newlands Stadium will provide a unique conference venue, and national and international delegates will be treated to the best of Cape Town’s social events, sightseeing, and surrounding recreational activities.
New Opportunities
This conference usually attracts around 300 delegates from 40 countries, including global experts in sport management, sport industry leaders, academic and research experts, as well as students. The valuable opportunity for South Africa to spotlight innovative ideas and solutions to sport management challenges is anticipated to strengthen the overall South African sports context. Hosting the conference in South Africa is a great achievement for institutions, and Prof Liandi van den Berg, associate professor of sport business management at NWU and conference bid committee chair, sees it as one step closer to her vision of uniting sport management experts and researchers worldwide to share their knowledge and ideas.
