“Anton dedicated his life to conservation and promoting good relations between conservation authorities and communities living outside protected areas.

I take this opportunity to salute his personal courage and the commitment with which he assumed his responsibilities.

I will also send my sincere condolences to his wife and his young family who have been left without his father and his breadwinner because of this heinous crime,” the minister said.

Mr. Mzimba had 24 years of experience as a ranger and was the winner of the Field.

Ranger of the Year

He was awarded Ranger of the Year at the annual Rhino Awards in 2016.

Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Forum

He was a key member of the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Forum.

World Ranger Day

His murder just days before World Ranger Day on July 31 underscores the dangers rangers face in protecting our country’s wildlife on a daily basis.

Kruger Park

“Recent trends in rhino poaching show a shift away from Kruger Park towards private reserves and KwaZulu-Natal, where most rhinos have been killed this year.

Minister Creecy

This makes it all the more important that the national government shift its focus to supporting provincial authorities and private reserves in the war against rhino poaching,” Minister Creecy said.

Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Forum

the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Forum to form a united front to combat wildlife crime and support rangers who are the front line of anti-poaching efforts.

At this meeting, Mr. Mzimba spoke passionately about the daily struggles rangers face in the ground battle he and his fellow rangers are leading.

Department of Forestry

At the meeting, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment explained our integrated approach in which it ensures that analysts from the Environmental Enforcement Fusion Centre, Green Scorpions, SAPS and Hawks work together on focused investigations with the aim of disrupting criminal enterprises.

National Prosecutor

The number of successful arrests and prosecutions recorded in the last 6 months can be attributed to the continued successful collaboration between law enforcement agencies, customs and excise officials and the National Prosecutor’s Office.

Partnerships between the public and private sectors remain key to combating wildlife trafficking.

Integrated Wildlife Zones

In addition to the work being carried out within the seven Integrated Wildlife Zones, the partnership now includes both the finance and transport sectors as well as transit and end-user countries in Southeast Asia, especially with the People’s Republic of China, Malaysia and Vietnam.

“We urge all who are concerned about rhino poaching and the toll it is taking on our rangers to reach out with concrete offers of assistance to the APNR administration.

Our duty now is to pick up the fallen spear of the ranger Mzimba and continue the battle on his behalf.

Minister Creecy

There is no greater tribute we can pay to this man who made the ultimate sacrifice for the conservation of our endangered species” Minister Creecy said.
