1 The Minister for Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms. Barbara Creecy, will appoint a ministerial task force to identify voluntary exit options and pathways for lion breeders from the captive lion industry.
2 The appointment of this advisory panel under NEMA Section 3a follows a High Level Panel which made recommendations to the Minister on matters relating to the management, breeding, hunting, trade and management of elephants, lions, leopards and rhinoceroses.
3 In her budget speech in May this year, the Minister proposed that the Department develop processes that allow for voluntary exit options and pathways from the captive lion industry.
4 The Minister has invited the public to submit nominations for members of the Ministerial Task Force to the Department.
5 Nominated members must have the necessary qualifications, knowledge and experience in a number of areas associated with the captive lion industry, animal welfare, the conservation and sustainable use of South African biodiversity in general, veterinary care and interventions of carnivores, the risk of diseases by breeding and elimination.

7 Nominations are also invited from trade union and labor law officials with particular experience in company closures and dismissals.

10 Members of the Ministerial Task Force will be remunerated in accordance with the provisions of the Public Finance Management Law and its associated National Treasury Regulations and guidelines.
