UN in Somalia welcomes direct elections in three districts of Puntland

United Nations in Somalia congratulates the Puntland Transitional Election Commission (TPEC), the government and the people of Puntland for their commitment to hold direct elections

United Nations officials today visited Qardho in solidarity with the people of Puntland as citizens participate in a “one person, one vote” electoral process in three districts of the federal member state.

The United Nations in Somalia believes that successful “one person, one vote” elections in Qardho, Eyl and Ufeyn would be an important step in demonstrating the feasibility of universal suffrage elections at local, state and national levels across the country.

The United Nations in Somalia commends the Puntland Transitional Election Commission (TPEC), the government and the people of Puntland for their commitment to hold direct elections, as provided for in the Puntland Constitution.
