The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Somali National Army (SNA) on Wednesday launched a Joint Operations Coordination Center (JOCC) in Mogadishu, to support ongoing efforts to degrade extremists in Al-Shabaab and stabilize Somalia.

The center established at AMISOM Sector 1 Headquarters was officially launched in a ceremony chaired by the Chief of the SNA Defense Force, General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh and the Deputy Force Commander of AMISOM in charge of operations and plans, Major General William Kitsao Shume.

The center, which is jointly operated by military officers from AMISOM and SNA, will improve joint planning and coordination of military operations against Al-Shabaab.

During the launch, General Odowaa reiterated the commitment of the SNA and underlined the importance of the collaboration between the SNA and AMISOM in the management of the centers established in the areas of responsibility of AMISOM.

“The success of these centers will depend on the relationship between the two headquarters of SNA and AMISOM, and how they coordinate to delegate work to sectors, which then execute these directives for execution and implementation. successful work. On our side, we will put a lot of effort into making this happen, ”General Odowaa said.

The Mogadishu center is one of six newly established centers across the country following recommendations from a joint area commanders conference held earlier this year.

The Somali CDF called for collaboration, coordination and mutual respect between SNA and AMISOM officers deployed to the center, to enable the mission to take full advantage of the center and all others at across the country.

General Odowaa said AMISOM and SNA have established a good working relationship over the years, noting that such shared experiences between the two forces will allow them to optimize the center.

“I believe that our long-standing cooperation and the experiences gained over the years will help us make the most of this center so that we can competently meet the challenges that lie ahead. Let’s use the center and make the most of all the opportunities that we might have missed, before the center was created, ”added General Odowaa.

Prior to the launch, General Odowaa inspected an honor guard mounted by AMISOM troops and then attended a closed-door security meeting.

For his part, Major-General Shume, said the launch of the center was an important step in achieving a common goal of having fully operational centers across the country.

“This event marks an important milestone in our efforts to ensure that all sector JOCCs are functioning and functioning fully. I am happy to see that JOCCs from all other sectors are also already established. We will jointly plan, coordinate and synchronize current and future operations. Therefore, we will be able to optimize the use of combat support and combat logistics support as we plan our operations, ”said Major-General Shume.

Brig. AMISOM Sector 1 Commander General Don Nabasa reiterated the importance of joint planning, noting that the establishment of the center and several others across the country would help address some of the challenges facing the two forces. are facing.

Composed of various cells of administration, intelligence, operations, logistics, communications and civil-military coordination (CIMIC), the JOCC will allow AMISOM and SNA to have a common understanding more clear of the threat situation, to improve operational efficiency and collaboration.
