Sokoto State records 397 fires in 7 months – Official

Alhaji Sani Buda, general manager of the Sokoto State Fire Department, said the agency had recorded 397 fires from January to date across the state.

Buda told the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Sokoto on Monday that six lives were lost while 24 others were saved by the agency during the reporting period.

“During the period, we were able to save properties worth over 1.6 billion naira, while 800 million naira of properties were lost.

“In addition, our rescue operators were able to save no less than 24 lives that fell in fires and other disasters, while they unfortunately lost the lives of six people in other incidents,” he said. -he declares.

Regarding the challenges, he said people did not appreciate the agency’s response time, adding that it was necessary for people to always use the available communication system provided by the agency to ensure a rapid response to requests. incidents.

“People, especially drivers, should always make their way for our fire fighting vehicles as they remain a big challenge during our operations and continue to take longer for our staff to locate disaster areas.

“In addition, it is necessary that the government is more committed to improving our operations, in particular on manpower and operational equipment,” added the director general.

Regarding equipment, Buda said only nine fire fighting vehicles were operating in the state metropolis and neighboring villages.

“We have nine operational firefighting vehicles serving the state metropolis and neighboring villages which are located at our five state stations.

“Three vehicles are parked at headquarters, two at Government House, two at Sultan Abubakar station and one each at our Central Market and Shagon Goro stations, respectively,” he said.

He pledged the agency’s commitment and working closely with citizens to tackle the challenges of fires and other disasters, while calling on people to reciprocate. (NAA)
