Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta praised the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) for training and empowering no fewer than 5,000 women and youth to acquire skills in the state.

Okowa delivered the eulogy while delivering a keynote address in Asaba, at the official closing of the 11th phase of the National Industrial Skills Development Program (NISDP), a flagship youth development and job creation program of the Federal Government.

The Nigerian News Agency reports that 100 women and youth, who graduated from NISDP 2021 programs from Warri and Asaba training centers, received training in catering and event management, and plumbing and pipe fitting for three months.

The Governor, representing the Secretary of the Delta State Vocational and Technical Education Board, Mr. Smart Ikem, said that acquiring technical skills remains the way out of the current forest of youth unemployment and recurring violence in the society.

The Governor, securing ITF support through the association, said the Delta Government had also engaged in various skills acquisition schemes to empower women, youth and girls through training and the necessary empowerment.

“This is to make them entrepreneurs and employers of labor, rather than job seekers.

“Delta is also a home for skills training and entrepreneur development, so we congratulate the Federal Government and the ITF for this empowerment that has not only reduced unemployment, but also violence in society,” said Okowa.

He warned the beneficiaries to accept the training received and put into practice the starter packs they were given to create wealth and build the country’s economy.

For his part, Sir Joseph Ari, ITF Director General, representing Ejekukor, ITF Deputy Director, denounced the rate of population growth, in particular the rate of unemployed youth in the country.

However, he said that youth may not be completely disadvantaged, but a demographic dividend of the working class is engaged in productive activities and its potential is fully exploited.

“Countries like China, South Korea, and Vietnam, among others, that were able to take advantage of the youth surge, did so through heavy investment in skills acquisition and a host of other economic reforms that ensured that the youth workforce was engaged.

“But it is not all doom and gloom, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has been implementing since 2015, which has empowered organisations, such as the ITF, to initiate and implement skills acquisition programs such as the NISDP.

“Since the inception of NISDP in 2016, it has equipped thousands of Nigerians across the country with skills for employability and entrepreneurship.

“This phase of the program whose closing ceremony takes place today, began in the third quarter of 2021.

“The training lasted for three months and in total at least 3,905 Nigerians were equipped with skills in two business areas of catering and event management, and plumbing and piping,” said Ari.

Urging beneficiaries to use the starter packs and skills gathered to improve their lives and contribute significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s economy, Ari also called for a partnership with state governments and individuals.

In her welcome address, Ms Ugochinyere Onyeka, Area Manager of the Warri Area Office, said that the ITF has trained and supported no fewer than 5,000 young people of Delta origin since its inception.

According to her, since then the program has proven to be a vital support for the Federal Government’s policy objectives of poverty eradication, job creation and economic diversification.

“The Agency is today graduating 100 young people from Delta extraction; 50 in plumbing and pipe fitting skills and another 50 in catering and event management.”

Answering, the representatives of the beneficiaries; Mr. Christopher Ashibuogu, Plumbing, and Ms. Ruth Irho, Catering, praised the Federal Government for the gesture, while pledging their commitment to making effective use of the training and starter packs.

reports that all graduates of the ITF NISDP 2021 skills acquisition program have received their starter packs; Gas stoves for Catering, while plumbing trainees received plumbing kits.
