Sinners Dey Blow Box Office, Collect $45M for Weekend!

HOLLYWOOD, California — Horror movie “Sinners” continue to reign supreme, raking in an impressive $45 million in its second weekend at the box office. The film’s ticket sales dipped only 6% from its initial $48 million debut, making it a rare case of a horror flick maintaining strong numbers after the opening weekend.

With a total gross of $122.5 million in North America and $161.6 million globally, against a production budget of $90 million, “Sinners” is proving its worth. According to reviews and audience excitement, this movie is poised for continued success, as the summer movie season draws near.

The vampire thriller, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, held steady despite the competition from several new releases that hit theaters over the weekend.

Following closely, the iconic “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” which Disney has re-released to mark its 20th anniversary, managed to secure second place with $25.2 million from 2,775 locations. The film earned an additional $17 million internationally for a global total of $42 million during the weekend. This is a remarkable performance for a film that has been available at home for two decades.

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant 2” clocked in at No. 3, grossing $24.5 million from 3,610 cinemas. Although this is a respectable opening for an R-rated action drama aimed at older audiences, it has a hefty $80 million budget to recoup. The first “Accountant” film opened with $24.7 million back in 2016, eventually grossing $155 million worldwide, making it a surprise hit.

“The Accountant 2” received an “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls, indicating strong audience reception, which is likely to boost word-of-mouth marketing. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, the sequel follows Affleck’s character teaming up with his estranged brother (Jon Bernthal) to confront dangerous assassins after uncovering a conspiracy.

In fourth place, Warner Bros.’ video game adaptation “A Minecraft Movie” earned $22.7 million in its fourth weekend and remains the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year with $380 million domestically and $816 million globally.

April has seen a change in the box office scene, as blockbusters like “Sinners” and “Minecraft” help drive growth in what started as a slow 2025. Four films managed to gross over $20 million during the weekend, an encouraging sign for the movie industry. Overall, revenues are 11% higher than in 2024 but still around 30% lower than 2019 figures, according to Comscore.

As senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted, “Hollywood is on a hot streak in April. After a dismal March, this is a much welcome change.”

Lastly, in fifth place, Sony’s R-rated horror film “Until Dawn” had an opening that matched expectations with $8 million from 3,055 venues. The film added $10.1 million internationally, bringing its global total to $18.1 million. Despite its lower reception, which includes a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C+” grade on CinemaScore, it is projected to still turn a profit.

New release “The Legend of Ochi” from A24 debuted in ninth place, earning a modest $1.4 million from 1,153 locations. The film tells the story of a shy farm girl who befriends a rare creature she was raised to fear.
