Sinking Deeper: Manchester United Fall to Defeat at the Hands of Brighton

When it rains, it pours. After a nightmare international break off the pitch, Manchester United would have been desperate to get back to playing, but little did they know that things would take a turn for the worse. Erik ten Hag’s side, led by Brighton, inflicted a 3-1 defeat on United in their own backyard.
United started the game brightly with the debutant Rasmus Hojlund, showing promise. However, their former homegrown hero, Danny Welbeck, capitalized on some awful defending by the United defenders to put Brighton ahead. Hojlund thought he had equalized, only to see his goal disallowed. The second half brought more misery for United as poor communication between Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof allowed Pascal Gross to double Brighton’s lead. Substitute Joao Pedro rubbed salt into United’s wounds, leaving them with little hope of a comeback.
Hannibal Mejbri managed to find the back of the net, earning himself his first goal for the club and providing a glimmer of hope for United. However, their efforts were in vain as they succumbed to their first home defeat in over a year. This loss also marked their first Premier League defeat at Old Trafford since Brighton beat them 2-1 on the opening day of last season.
Let’s assess Manchester United’s players from their disappointing performance at Old Trafford.
