The Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) in the Republic of Seychelles, HE Mr. Vincent Degert, accompanied by representatives of nine EU Member States and a representative of the EU Naval Force, paid a visit courtesy to the President of the Republic, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan at Government House this morning.
The EU delegation is currently in Seychelles for the 9th Seychelles-EU Political Dialogue which was co-chaired yesterday by the Seychelles Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, and the EU Ambassador, Mr. Vincent Degert.
In his welcoming remarks, the Head of State welcomed the delegation to the Government House and trusted that this year’s Political Dialogue has given rise to fruitful discussions and has been conducive to fostering a greater understanding of the position of Seychelles and its development agenda.
He congratulated both of them; Minister Radegonde and Ambassador Degert for leading the discussions.
The President underlined the importance that the Government of Seychelles attached to dynamic cooperation with the European Union, where he reaffirmed the commitment to further strengthen the Seychelles-EU partnership, which is based on shared values such as respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law and a strong commitment to promoting a rules-based world order.
“The fact that we have 9 Ambassadors or their representatives from the EU Member States is a great encouragement for us.
It shows the importance that the EU attaches to Seychelles, even though we are the smallest as one of the African countries.
Seychelles appreciates the assistance and support of the EU.
You have been supporting the Attorney General’s office; the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and is now fully involved in the expansion and rehabilitation of Port Victoria.
Through EU NAVFOR, we have fought against piracy, and I know we can go further, and we will surely continue this conversation on the way forward,” said President Ramkalawan.
In his intervention, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU), Ambassador Degert highlighted and reiterated the commitment of the EU to support Seychelles and provide technical assistance when necessary to address problems at the local level.
During the meeting, President Ramkalawan was briefed on the meeting in which the EU and Seychelles share common interests, and how to better coordinate and work together regionally and internationally, on agendas such as peace, maritime security, cybersecurity and disinformation.
, climate change, governance and human rights, economic prospects, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, the fight against money laundering and taking advantage of EU technical assistance, among other topics.
It was also an opportunity for the Head of State and the EU delegation to further discuss the fight against illicit drugs and human trafficking, maritime security, the successful EU BlueInvest Africa held last month, the upcoming Conference on Climate Change 2022 (COP27) and the EU support for a multidimensional vulnerability index (MVI), which highlights the needs of small island states based on their vulnerabilities rather than their GDP per capita.
