Senate President mourns Ernest Shonekan

Senate President Dr. Ahmad Lawan has mourned the head of the late Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 85.

Mr. Lawan, in a statement released Tuesday in Abuja by Mr. Ola Awoniyi, his Special Adviser on Media, expressed his condolences to the Shonekan family, the government and the people of Ogun on the death of the former Nigerian leader.

Chief Shonekan was a lawyer, business captain, boardroom guru, and statesman. But he will be most remembered for heeding the nation’s call to duty in a very turbulent period in Nigerian history.

“Chief Shonekan’s services as Chairman of the Transitional Council and later as Head of the Interim National Government were disinterested and went a long way in preventing the Nigerian ship from hitting a rock,” Lawan said.

The President of the Senate prayed for the rest of the soul of the elderly statesman and that God would grant his loved ones the strength to bear his loss.
