Security Council weighs support for Guterres’ second term as UN chief

The United Nations Security Council will discuss on Tuesday whether to support Antonio Guterres in his bid for a second term as UN secretary general.

The 15-member UN body is likely to vote in favor of the 72-year-old Portuguese diplomat.

In recent years, Guterres has managed to maintain good relations with the powerful veto powers, the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France; in addition, there is no opposing official candidate.

A recommendation from the council is seen as a crucial hurdle for Guterres to be confirmed by the General Assembly for an additional five years at the top UN office.

A session of the General Assembly is expected before the end of June.

The new mandate of the UN chief is expected to begin on January 1, 2022 and last for five years.

The previous nine incumbents were all men, four of whom were from Europe.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that Guterres got the post in 2016, going through a reformed selection process that included an informal public dialogue session at the General Assembly, involving representatives of civil society, where each of the 13 candidates presented vision statements, and answered questions.

NAN reports that in accordance with Article 97 of the United Nations Charter, the appointment is made by the General Assembly, on the recommendation of the Security Council, which in effect means that one of the five permanent members (P5) can veto the candidate.

Each Secretary General has the option of a second term, provided he can muster sufficient support from member states. (dpa / NAN)
