A 55-year-old Scavenger, Ubong Akpabio, was on Friday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged theft of generator valued N25,000.
The defendant, who has no fixed address is facing a count charge of stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at about 3 a.m., on Nov. 29, at Ilaje road, Bariga area of Lagos.
Oriabure alleged that the defendant was scavenging scrap in the area and hid a Suzuin T1987 generator belonging to Mr Sunday Orji.
“It was when he tried to move it at night from where he hid it that the complainant’s neighbours caught him and took him to Bariga Police Station,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The Nigerian News Agency reports that Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for the offence of stealing.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs S.O. Obasa, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one responsible surety in like sum.
Obasa directed that the surety must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to Lagos State Government.
