Samantha Weinstein, Star of “Carrie” Remake and Voice Actor, Dies at 28 After Battle with Ovarian Cancer
Actor Samantha Weinstein, known for her role in the 2013 remake of “Carrie” and voice acting in several cartoons, passed away on May 14, 2022, at the age of 28. Her father, David Weinstein, confirmed her passing in a statement to USA TODAY and revealed that Samantha had been battling ovarian cancer. She died at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
David shared that Samantha was passionate about her art and continued to work up until her last days, voicing animated characters and living her life to the fullest. He also confirmed that Samantha’s farewell post, featuring photos of her smiling and floating among the cosmos, which were posted on her unverified Instagram account on May 15, were created by the actor herself.
Despite her ongoing cancer treatment, Samantha didn’t let it hold her back from living a full life. In fact, she married Michael Knutson in October 2022, and the couple honeymooned in Japan.
In an article for Love What Matters, published last July, Samantha reflected on getting diagnosed with cancer at the age of 25 and falling in love with Knutson. They went on their first date a week after her diagnosis, which Samantha found nerve-wracking.
She shared that Knutson’s unwavering support and love helped her through the difficult times. They shaved their heads together when her hair began falling out, and Knutson even took her out for ice cream when her fingers started turning black from nerve damage.
During their wedding, which happened 20 months after her diagnosis and following ten rounds of chemotherapy, Samantha and Knutson battled each other with lightsabers instead of having a first dance. She later revealed in an Instagram post that they were going for a “pretend-fighting-in-your-parents-basement vibe.”
Besides her cancer battle, Samantha also came out as “bisexual/pansexual” and non-binary to her parents and to Knutson, all of whom accepted her.
She wrote in her Love What Matters piece that despite all the challenges, cancer had taught her lessons of love, gratitude, and self-acceptance. “I have more love in my life and for myself than I ever could have imagined, and I see every day as a gift.”
Samantha’s passing sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow actors, all of whom praised her courage, talent, and indomitable spirit. Her legacy lives on through her inspiring journey and the many characters she brought to life on screen.
