Russia suspends electricity to Finland

Russia suspended electricity supplies to Finland overnight after its energy company RAO Nordic threatened to cut supply over late payments, an official with Finland‘s grid operator told AFP on Saturday.

“It’s at zero right now, and that started from midnight as planned,” said Timo Kaukonen, operational planning manager at Fingrid.

RAO Nordic had said on Friday it would suspend supplies, citing payment problems, as Helsinki prepares to announce its NATO application following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

But the deficit was being offset by imports from Sweden. Finland imports about 10 percent of its energy from Russia.

RAO Nordic says that electricity has not been paid since May 6, but has not explained whether this was related to European sanctions against Russia.

The invasion of Moscow on February 24 has shifted political and public opinion in Finland and Sweden in favor of NATO membership as a deterrent against Russian aggression.

Both countries have long cooperated with the Western military alliance and it is hoped that they can join it quickly.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has repeatedly said they would be welcomed “with open arms”.
