The Rotary Club of Ibadan City Central, has donated exercise books to Alafia Primary School, Mokola, Ibadan and stocked the library of the school with various books.
Donating the items in Ibadan on Saturday, the President of the Club, Ms Morenike Barlatt-Hughes, said the gesture was part of the social responsibility of the club in positively touching the lives of the citizens.
Barlatt-Hughes said the donation would not only be of immense benefit to the pupils but would as well improve the teaching skills of the teachers.
She said the donation would go a long way in improving the standard of education in Oyo State and Nigeria in general.
She said the donation of the exercise books and stocking of the school library with books would reduce the burden of the parents financially and increase school enrolment.
“Most students are at home because their parents don’t have money to buy them exercise books.
“With this donation, the pupils will not have to bother their parents with money for exercise books and this will lead to regular attendance of school.
“I urge the school’s management to distribute the exercise books judiciously to serve the desire objectives,” Barlatt-Hughes said.
Speaking at the occasion, Yinka Oladimeji, the Caretaker Chairman of Irepodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), appreciated the club for their efforts at making learning convenient for the pupils.
Oladimeji, who was represented by Mrs Suliyat Alakufo, Supervisory Councillor on Education and Social Services, Irepodun LCDA, said the gesture would be of great benefit to the students and the teachers.
He called on other organisations in the country to compliment government’s effort by donating to the education sector in order to give quality education to the students.
“Rotary Club is not the only organisation in Nigeria that can support government’s effort, so we call on others to follow the step of Rotary and donate to the school because government alone cannot do it.
“We are meant to compliment and assist one another for the betterment of the masses.
“The entire members of staff of the council, the teachers and pupils of this school appreciate Rotary Club of Ibadan City Central for this gesture.” he said.
Present at the occasion was the Rotary District Governor RI 9125, Mrs Jumoke Bamigboye.
