Riga FC Snatch Late Goal to Defeat Daugavpils for Important Win

Daugavpils, Latvia – In a tense match, Riga FC managed to clinch a 1-0 away victory against BFC Daugavpils on May 14, 2025. The only goal came in the 80th minute, sending Riga fans into celebration and Daugavpils supporters into despair.

Early in the match, a foul by Daugavpils’ Toņiševs at the edge of the penalty area allowed Bartelemī Djedjū to take a direct free kick. However, his attempt was blocked by the defensive wall. Throughout the first half, Daugavpils demonstrated slight dominance, controlling more of the play but failing to secure any significant scoring chances.

“The first half was frustrating for us. We had possession but couldn’t create meaningful opportunities,” said Daugavpils coach after the match.

The second half saw more action, with Babū Dialo making a strong run into Riga’s box, only to be denied by Elbašīrs Ngoms. Despite Daugavpils’ complaints for a penalty, referee Aleksandrs Golubevs stood firm in his decision.

As the match progressed, Riga began to assert their presence, and in the 70th minute, Daugavpils’ Ahmeds Ankrā almost found the net but headed just wide after a well-placed cross from Dāvis Cucurs.

Then in the 80th minute, a pivotal moment happened. Substitute Jagu Sikeira delivered a floating cross into the box, and Brajans Penja leapt higher than the defense to score his fifth goal of the season. “It feels great to help the team like this,” Penja expressed after the match.

In the closing moments of the match, Daugavpils nearly equalized during a corner kick, but Krišjānis Zviedris made a crucial save to deny them. Another attempt from Tumanī Diakitē struck the post, sealing the fate of the game.

The final score was Daugavpils 0, Riga FC 1, keeping Riga’s hopes alive for a strong finish in the Latvijas futbola Virslīga.

Upcoming fixtures include Liepāja facing RFSDaugavas and Jelgava hosting Auda on May 15.
