Remo Stars Dey Ready to Grab First NPFL Title as Dem Face Niger Tornadoes

Ikenne, NigeriaRemo Stars, the leaders of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), go head-to-head against relegation-threatened Niger Tornadoes today, April 27, 2025. This match comes as Remo Stars aim for their first NPFL title in history after a decisive victory from second-placed Rivers United, who lost 2-0 to Kano Pillars in a recent match. With just one win needed, the stakes are high as the team seeks to secure their place in football history.

Currently, Remo Stars have a seven-point lead over Rivers United, and a win against Tornadoes will solidify their position as champions. However, coach Daniel Ogunmodede reminds his players that the job is not done yet. “I am not feeling anything,” Ogunmodede told PUNCH Sports Extra. “We won’t be declared champions until we are champions. Our opponents are in a difficult situation as well, so we can’t afford to be carried away.”

Additively, the team boasts experienced defenders who have previously lifted the NPFL trophy while with Rivers United. Both Fabian Nworie and Ifeanyi Anaemena support Ogunmodede’s cautions, emphasizing the need for focus through the season’s end. “All of us should remain focused till the end of the season,” Nworie mentioned, adding, “In this period, we must give our 100 percent in every game,” Anaemena said.

On the flip side, Niger Tornadoes aim to escape the relegation zone, currently sitting 14th in the league with 44 points, just two points above the drop. They know defeat today might seal Remo’s title but also push them closer to relegation. With matches against Abia Warriors, Sunshine Stars, and Kano Pillars upcoming, Tornadoes must strive for at least a draw to maintain their safety.

Should Remo Stars win, they will extend their lead to an insurmountable 10 points with only nine remaining to play for. Any result less than victory would subtly bring Rivers United back into the title race, while a draw would maintain an eight-point cushion over the Port Harcourt side.
