Federal Government

He said: “The Federal Government is doing everything possible in general in the education sector, but we in the polytechnic sector believe that there is still a lot to do.

”This is in terms of improving infrastructure facilities and upgrading the equipment we use in training our students.

“Because in the past, polytechnics had a reputation for producing quality graduates and I think there should be no deviation, polytechnics are known for their practical applications.

“And when we had industries, which I think will still have a resurgence of them in this country, most of the industries prepared polytechnics.”

Federal Government

Oladebeye praised the Federal Government for its efforts to close the gap between Higher National Diploma (HND) Graduates and Bachelor (B.sc.) graduates.

Federal Government

He said: “So, to that extent and with the current situation, we in the polytechnic sector, due to the discrimination that existed in the past, now the Federal Government is trying to close the gap.

National Assembly

“There have been many submissions to the National Assembly to bridge the dichotomy between HND and B.sc.

“It’s a function of what individual people can actually do, not what kind of paper grades you have, that should be the problem.

“Even in the development of the country, consider that many advanced countries in the world do not care about whether you have HND or Bsc. and all that.

United States of America

“For example, six months ago, a female graduate of one of the Nigerian polytechnics who graduated with distinction got a scholarship to go directly to PhD in the United States of America.”

Oladabeye described the feat as very rare from HND to PhD, adding that if it were in Nigeria some people would find meaning in it.

Postgraduate Diploma

“That with HND, you must do a Postgraduate Diploma before doing a master’s degree and the rest,” said the rector.

Oladebeye said that since he took office more than five years ago, he has been able to take care of the welfare of staff and students at the institution to some extent.

He said: “I’m not saying we’ve done everything, but we’ve done the best we could with the scarce resources at our disposal.

“We promote our staff regularly, and by the grace of God, before the end of this year, we will do everything necessary for the promotion of 2023.”

Abdullahi Aliyu

Earlier, the president of the NGO, Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu, explained that he decided to give an award to the rector for improving academic excellence at the polytechnic.

He said: “The NGO leadership found it necessary to recognize and honor Oladebeye for the historic achievements recorded at the polytechnic under his leadership.

“It has transformed the polytechnic and it has done so to not only compete with its sister polytechnics in the country, but it is also competing with internationally recognized learning institutions around the world.”

Abba Kofar-Durbi

In attendance were Alhaji Abba Kofar-Durbi, the NGO’s national leader, Dr. Tijjani Abdullahi, the group’s northwest leader, and Hajiya Fatima Nyanya, among others.
