Chelsea are reportedly facing competition from Real Madrid for the signing of Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.
The Dutch international left PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021 to join the Nerazzurri, who called on the 26-year-old to replace Achraf Hakimi.
Dumfries immediately established himself as Simone Inzaghi’s first choice at right-back and enjoyed a solid first season with five goals and seven assists in 45 games.
The former PSV player has continued to be a right-wing attacking threat for Inter in the 2022-23 season, racking up two goals and three assists in 20 appearances in all tournaments.
Dumfries has also started all four of the Netherlands’ World Cup 2022 games so far and produced a man-of-the-match performance in his team’s round of 16 win over the US on Friday.
The Inter defender assisted Memphis Depay and Daley Blind to put the Netherlands up 2-0 before half-time, and volleyed unmarked at the far post late in his side’s 3-1 win.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Dumfries in January, while Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with an interest in the Dutchman.
However, London rivals have now been joined in the race by Real Madrid, according to Transfers, who say Carlo Ancelotti sees Dumfries as an ideal choice to succeed Dani Carvajal.
The report adds that Carlo Ancelotti was impressed with Dumfries’ attacking qualities, and the defender would jump at the chance to sign for the Champions League holders.
Inter have Dumfries under contract until 2025 and the Serie A giants are reportedly demanding between €50m (£42.9m) and €60m (£51.4m). to sanction a sale in 2023.
In addition, Inzaghi’s team are believed to be already looking at possible replacements for Dumfries, with the Nerazzurri having pointed to Angelo Preciado and Juan Cuadrado as possible successors.
Following the Netherlands’ round of 16 victory over the United States, Dumfries was questioned by the press about his ties to Chelsea, who are reportedly willing to exceed the price Inter is asking to beat Real Madrid on his transfer.
However, the right-back remained mum about his future, telling reporters: “Of course it’s a great compliment to be linked with Chelsea, but playing for Inter is also a great compliment. Will you be moving to Chelsea in January? “I’m focused on nothing more than the national team and Inter.”
Dumfries has tallied seven goals and 10 assists in 65 appearances for Inter in all competitions, having already won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana at the San Siro.
The 26-year-old is expected to keep his place in the Dutch squad when they take on Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals on Friday.
