Madrid, Spain — Real Madrid barely scraped through with 3-2 victory against Celta Vigo on Sunday, thanks to the stunning performances of Arda Guler and Kylian Mbappe. Despite a lackluster display for most of the game, Madrid remains in the La Liga title race.
It was the first half where Guler shined brightest. His creativity stood out, making him the only player who seemed capable of turning the tide for Madrid while others appeared sluggish. Carlo Ancelotti had previously expressed hopes of giving the young Turkish midfielder a more central role, and Guler justified that faith with his brilliant play. In the 33rd minute, he curled a stunning shot into the top corner, putting Madrid ahead.
Kylian Mbappe quickly followed suit, showcasing his innate goal-scoring ability. He struck swiftly, charging through Celta’s defense and smashing the ball into the net, extending the lead to 2-0. Just after the break, Mbappe found the net again, this time converting an angled through pass from Guler, making the score 3-0. The duo’s impressive chemistry was evident throughout the match.
However, things took a turn as Madrid’s defensive frailties became apparent in the closing stages. Lucas Vazquez‘s careless clearance let Javi Rodriguez score a simple tap-in, narrowing the score to 3-1. Celta, energized by their goal, continued to push forward, and soon after, Iago Aspas assisted Williot Swedberg, who coolly finished, bringing the score to 3-2.
Celta’s momentum seemed to set the stage for an equalizer as Aspas orchestrated their attacks, but ultimately, they couldn’t find the finishing touch. Despite their struggle and the late surge from Celta, Madrid held on to secure three points, which keeps them four points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
The win was tough, but it underlined the importance of individual brilliance in football. Madrid will now prepare for the highly anticipated Clasico next week, with aspirations of narrowing the gap at the top of La Liga.
