Real Betis vs. Manchester United live score, updates, recaps, stream for mid-season friendly
Manchester United will continue their preparations for the return of English and European football after the World Cup, as they prepare to face La Liga side Real Betis in their second mid-season friendly. The Red Devils began their Spanish camp with a game against relegation-threatened Cádiz, losing 4-2 in a game in which they fielded a very youthful team in the second half.
United’s first competitive match after the World Cup takes place in just 11 days, as they were drawn to play Burnley in the EFL Cup on Wednesday 21 December. So this friendly against a team that sits sixth in La Liga, will likely see the Red Devils field a team that looks a lot more like their first-choice XI, minus their players who are still vying for glory in Qatar, of course.
Lineups:
Real Betis (4-2-3-1, from right to left): Silva (GK) – Montoya, Felipe, Ruiz, Moreno – Paul, Canales – Henrique, Rodri, Fekir – Iglesias.
Manchester United line-up (4-3-3, right to left): De Gea (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Mengi, Lindelof, Williams — McTominay, Hansen-Aaroen, Iqbal — Elanga, Garnacho, Martial.
The Sporting News follows the match live and provides live score updates, commentary.

Real Betis vs. Man United live updates, mid-season friendly recap HALF TIME: Real Betis 0-0 Manchester United
It has been a classic performance in the first half of pre-season for both sides, as the chances have been limited and the intensity hasn’t been there. The hosts had the best chance when they hit the post early on and Martial’s dipping effort is the closest United have come, yet neither side has the goalkeepers worried.
minute 43: Martial is again getting to the edge of the box, this time trying his luck with a diving effort but going wide.
minute 39: Martial connects McTominay on the edge of the box, but makes an effort when he is brought down. No free kick and the shot goes high and wide.
minute 36: Garnacho breaks free down the left and cuts the ball to Iqbal, who uses his quick feet to beat one man but is unable to get past the second. United have yet to prove the Betis goalkeeper.
minute 30: Iglesias has time on the edge of the area and tries but his shot goes straight to De Gea, who picks it up easily. United go up the other end and Elanga drags a shot wide wide.
minute 22: Betis hits the post! It was a great shot from outside the box and may have been deflected to hit the post, but United got their way there. It was a good shot from Henrique.
minute 16: Mengi seems to have been hurt on the ball and looks really frustrated. The United centre-back tried to limp off the pitch but has now been called for a stretcher and will be substituted. It looks like Rhys Bennett will replace Mengi.
minute 15: Hansen-Aaroen finds Garnacho well in the area and the Argentine tries to cut with his right foot inside but the balls get tangled between his feet and Betis clears the danger.
minute 10: Garnacho is enjoying his time off on the left flank as he has room to fill but hasn’t caused Betis any problems so far. United have been slow in their construction game and the home team is comfortable.
Minute 6: Williams comes into action at the back while Betis attack on the left. They manage to get a quick shot in but United’s left-back clears well. The strength of Iglesias is causing Mengi some problems at the back in these early stages.
Kick off: We are underway in Spain, the hosts start the game.
9 minutes from start: There has reportedly been a late change to United’s starting line-up tonight. Donny van de Beek will no longer start and Hansen-Aaroen takes his place.

20 minutes from the start: Erik ten Hag has been speaking to MUTV before the game and wants to see an improvement on Wednesday’s loss in Cádiz: “It wasn’t a good performance, we said after the game, that was our conclusion. We have to do better and that’s fine, there are reasons, but we always have to perform,” he said. “We have to organize ourselves better in and out of possession. midfield [and] The offensive line, especially the offensive line, has to be better in transition. We have to keep the ball better, move the ball through the team, introduce game changes, make runs. We have to do much better.”
30 minutes from start: Here are the views from inside the ground. The Benito Villamarín Stadium has a capacity of 60,000 spectators, the fourth largest in Spain. However, they have yet to fill the stadium with a record crowd of 57,123 when Betis played Valencia in 2019.

This mid-season friendly is broadcast exclusively on MUTV, Manchester United’s club TV channel. It is only available to stream via MUTV, which is subscription based.
What players are available for Manchester United?
Of the 14 United contract players who left for Qatar in November, one, Cristiano Ronaldo, has since left the club entirely, while six are back in Manchester following elimination. Facundo Pellistri (Uruguay) and Christian Eriksen (Denmark) were eliminated in the group stage, while the Dutch team led by Tyrell Malacia and the Brazilians Fred, Antony and Casemiro finished their tournaments in the quarterfinals.
None of these six are likely to join the team until the Red Devils return to England before the restart, but United still have several big names to call in this game. Martin Dubravka played the full match against Cádiz, but starter David de Gea returns under the sticks, with the Spanish side having also missed the national team by a header, having lost on penalties to Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Lineups Real Betis vs Manchester United
The Verdiblancos saw five of their first team head to Qatar, with three – Argentines Germán Pezzella and Guido Rodríguez and Portuguese William Carvalho – still active in the tournament. Andrés Guardado and Youssouf Sabaly, eliminated with Mexico and Senegal respectively, return home, but neither will take the field for a Betis that will probably be close to their starting eleven.
Predicted Real Betis line-up (4-3-3 from right to left): 13. Rui Silva — 2. Martín Montoya, 6. Víctor Ruiz, 19. Luis Felipe, 15. Alex Moreno — 10. Sergio Canales, 4. Paul Akouokou, 28. Rodri Sánchez — 11. Luis Henrique, 9. Borja Iglesias, 8. Nabil Fékir.
