Rain wreaks havoc, kills 2 people in Katsina – SEMA

By Abbas Bamalli

The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said heavy rains on Monday, which lasted nearly five hours, killed two people in the Bindawa local government area in the state.

Alhaji Umar Mohammed, the agency’s public relations officer (PRO), who confirmed the incident, said more than 1,500 homes were affected by rain in three LGAs in the state.

Mohammed said more than 800 homes were affected in Faskari, 400 in Bindawa and 300 in Sabuwa, adding that the agency was already looking at how to help the victims.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the rain, which started around 10:00 a.m. Monday and stopped around 4:00 p.m., has forced many motorists to abandon their vehicles.

Some of the residents of Metropolitan Katsina, who spoke to NAN, expressed concern that some main streets were flooded due to the heavy downpour.

Many motorists traveling along the Kofar Kaura roundabout and parts of the Metropolis planning area were able to detour using a single lane of the road to their various destinations.

One of the motorists, Malam Muhammad Safana, called the situation worrying, saying the situation could worsen if the heavy rains continued.

“As you have seen, the rain caused flooding, which filled some main roads in the city, looking for a route to pass, and some houses were also hit.

“As I was crossing the Tudun Katsira route, some buildings were also affected due to the lack of proper drains in the areas. Even the areas with the drains are clogged with garbage, which has hampered the free flow of water during the rainy season, ”he said.

Malam Abubakar Sani, another motorist, called on the state government to take immediate action to prevent such incidents from happening again.

“I hope that following this incident, it serves as a reminder to the state government to take action immediately, to prevent a future recurrence.” he said. (NAA)
