Raheem Sterling left England’s World Cup squad in Qatar and returned to London after his home was robbed.
Surrey Police said the home’s occupants returned to find jewelery and watches that had been stolen. There were no threats of violence involved.
The player’s spokesman said Sterling was “prioritizing the well-being” of his three young children.
Sterling was said to be “shocked” and “as soon as he was alerted, he wanted to come home.”
The spokesman, speaking on Sunday, added that the intruders were armed and the family was at home.
But police said in a statement Monday: “We will reassure our communities that no witnesses have come forward to this effect.”
The statement read: “On Saturday, December 3, the occupants returned to the address after arriving home from international travel. Police were contacted just before 9pm to report that various jewelry, including watches, had been stolen.” .
“Officers attended the address later that night and returned to speak with the occupants this morning. At this time it is unclear on what date the property was stolen and establishing this is a key part of our investigation.”
“Investigations into the full circumstances are ongoing and officers will look at all available evidence, including CCTV opportunities.”
They added that no arrests had been made.
Speaking after Sunday’s 3-0 win, England manager Gareth Southgate said: “Sometimes football isn’t the most important thing and family should come first.
“We want to give it that space and we’ll see in the next few days how it plays out.”
Sterling’s teammate Declan Rice said: “I saw him at breakfast this morning, then coach said he was having a hard time at home so we all sent him a message.”
England’s next game in the World Cup is against France in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Two years ago, three burglars who attacked several homes in the northwest of England, including an attempted break-in where Sterling lived in Cheshire in November 2018, were jailed.
Southgate opted to play Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden on either side of Harry Kane for England’s 3–0 win over Wales.
The England boss has often relied on Sterling during major tournaments; he started all seven of England’s Euro 2020 games.
