A former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu, has apologized for saying that the Permanent Voter Card, PVC, has expired.

Tinubu apologized in a statement from his media assistant, Tunde Rahman, on Thursday in Lagos.

It is worth recalling that while addressing a delegation of women from Lagos at the APC Women’s Conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr. Tinubu asked them to check the status of their PVC.

He had said this was to make sure his cards hadn’t expired.

The statement, however, explained that Tinubu used the word ‘expire’ instead of saying that “cards may need to be updated or revalidated.”

“Immediately after learning of this, Tinubu apologized for the incorrect statement and regretted any confusion it may have caused.”

Mr. Tinubu commended INEC for working towards a free and fair electoral process and emphasized the need for Nigerians to fully participate in the elections to strengthen democracy.

Therefore, she urged women to continue mobilizing voters to update their PVCs.

Tinubu also urged them to mobilize at the grassroots level so that the elections reflect the sovereign will of all the people for a true democracy to be established.

She urged women to check their voting details with INEC to make sure they are up to date before the next election.

“The gap between those who registered for the elections and those who usually came to collect their PVCs is wide. That constitutes a serious challenge, which can impede the growth of our democracy,” he said.
