Press Council to partner Bangladesh on capacity building

By Collins Yakubu-Hammer

The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) expresses its readiness to partner with the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, through exchange and capacity building programs, to improve professionalism in the media sectors of both country.

AFN Executive Secretary Francis Nwosu said this when Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Nigeria Masudur Raham visited the council on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nwosu said Nigeria and Bangladesh have things in common, such as the issue of circularism.

He added that the council was doing its best to strengthen and consolidate the unity of the different groups in the country, through appropriate regulations.

“However, we are ready to participate in an exchange program with the Press Council in your country, to build the capacity of staff to improve effective regulation that would benefit Nigeria and Bangladesh.

“We want to see how to explore opportunities for collaboration and capacity building of our board staff and journalists in Nigeria. We look forward to this opportunity when the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.

“In addition, we look forward to the sharing of ideas and exchange programs between the Nigerian press and the Bangladeshi press,” Nwosu said.

Speaking earlier, Raham commended Nigerian journalists for their professionalism and tenacity in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

He explained the similarities between Nigeria and his country, stressing that the collaboration will benefit both countries.

Raham said there were programs that Nigerian journalists would benefit from in Bangladesh, adding that if it hadn’t been for the COVID-19 pandemic, he would have loved them to visit his country.

He said Bangladesh would celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence in July and extended an invitation to the AFN.
