President Muhammadu Buhari praised the military qualities of the late Lieutenant General . Joshua Dogonyaro , former Chief of Defense Staff, days after describing him as one of the best soldiers the Nigerian military has ever produced.

Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s spokesman in a statement, said Buhari shared his feelings during a funeral oration read on his behalf by the defense minister, the retired major general. Bashir Magashi, at the burial ceremony of the late Dogonyaro in Lantang, Plateau, Friday.

Buhari said Dogonyaro was “an icon of professionalism, bravery and discipline, as amply demonstrated by the attributes he displayed in his national and international military missions.

“The late General was a benchmark for us and will remain a source of inspiration for many officers, serving and retired.

“He was a grown up son of Nigeria, widely known for his extraordinary loyalty to his country, a virtue Nigeria needs from all of us at this critical time of its nationhood.”

In a letter of condolence delivered by the presidential delegation to Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, Buhari said:

“Giving his life for the country is one of the greatest sacrifices a citizen can make for his country.

“His many contributions (of Dogonyaro) will be remembered for years to come.

“I pray that Almighty God will grant his family and all the people of Plateau State the courage to endure the loss.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, one of the late general’s children, Ibrahim thanked the president “for his love and care for the Dogonyaro family”.

The Minister for the Status of Women, Pauline Tallen, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, accompanied the Minister of Defense in the presidential delegation. (NAA)
